I bought the laptop almost 2 weeks ago have not opened the box yet. I was just looking for some reviews before I opened it & ran into a site with some very disturbing complaints re: the s229 crashing & freezing up. Supposedly maybe a class action lawsuit. Before I open the box (& thereafter can't return for a full refund) I'd love to hear what other owners have to say. Don't know if I can post the name of the other site here so I'll wait to hear. By the way I have untill wed nite to decide, help please.

The issue with the freezine and crashing may be due to inadequate cooling for the CPU. Since it's based on the Prescott core, they're known to run hot.

Thanks for the reply. Is this a problem with all mobile pentium 4's or just this particular one?

It'll happen to any CPU that doesn't have adequate cooling, even a Pentium M CPU. I believe there's a better chance of overheating on this core vs the others, mainly because it's know to run very hot.

I'm not familar with term "core". Do you mean by core mobile PIV or just the way it's set up in this Toshiba.

I've had my S229 since Jan 2 and have read of this lock-up problem on two other forums. On both forums the problem was traced to a static discharge going through the speaker grills. There is talk of a class action suit against Toshiba and one of those forums contains a link to an attorney who is working on it. If anyone wants the links to those forums, email me and I will forward them to you.
As for my own experience in the last two weeks of ownership, my machine has frozen on me twice, but both times I am absolutely sure that it was from a static discharge from myself after having walked aroud the room and touched the laptop. I can even trace it down to the clothes and shoes that I was wearing at the time (wool sweater and fleece lined slippers). I get shocked everywhere I go in the house when I am wearing those slippers.
Back to the Toshiba aspect of things, apparently there is a directive to repair centers to replace the speaker grills with a different type.
So far, I love my 229 and have no intention of trying to return it.
Hope this helps,

Artl,
The term "core" is just to describe the internals of the CPU itself. So when I say this type of core is know to run hot, I mean CPU's based on a similar internal design are known to run hot.
Stinger,
I see a class action lawsuit against Toshiba for this minor problem probably a hoax. The systems don't blow up and won't cause any bodily harm to anybody that comes across this problem. Toshiba has a fix for this problem as you indicated yourself and things like this are bound to happen in the manufacturing process. All manufacturers will have a defect of one type or another from time to time, doesn't mean that there's grounds for a lawsuit. If Toshiba was completely aware of this issue and didn't offer a fix, then there might be cause, but not when a solution is offered under warranty.
