    hey people. i recently turned on my laptop and it was on the self test screen (the screen that has the little blue bar scrolling along at the very beggining) and after that it comes up with a blue screen saying: STOP: c0000221 {bad image checksum}
    the urlmon.dll is possibly corrupt. the header checksum does not
    match the computed checksum. i really do not want to use a recovery disc on it because it has a alot of things that i hold very valuable to myself so if any one knows how i can sort out this problem i will be grateful.

    The recovery disk, should let you repair windows, but some don't it will how ever, all ways ask before it will wipe any thing.

    The other way, is to download a copy of knoppix, and get all the stuff you want off the laptop, then use your recovery disk.

    If you want more info about knoppix, just ask, and I'll do my best to help you out.

    I say try using the recovery discs. However, if the computer's data cannot be salvaged you may have to reformat.

    Hi,

    Have you tried booting in safe mode yet? If it boots in safe, you can get the .dll here. copy it to the desired location.

    If it won't boot in safe, make a bootable USB stick, boot on it and copy it like that.

    No guarantees, though.

    Ice-Tea out!

    Knoppix is a version of Linux. You'd have to download it and burn it to a CD. You then pop it in the CD drive and boot to it, thereby bypassing the corrupted Windows install if that is the problem. Then dump the data onto an external drive. It works quite slick. I have saved a couple PCs that way myself.

    If you don't feel comfortable with Linux, you could get an external case for your hard drive. Put you drive in it and you can dump the data onto another PC. Then you can wipe the disc and re-install windows.

    Lastly, you should really have a backup and save your self some anxiety for the next time this happens. I personally keep three copies of all the stuff I cannot afford to lose. One on my desktop, one on an external drive and another copy on some DVDs. You really can never be too careful. Good Luck.
