    hi there,

my step sister has broken the screen on her 1 year and 3 day old laptop (talk about luck, 3 days out of her accidental damage warranty)
she has a lot of info on her HDD she needs for her university course which cant be backed up cos she doesnt have anything to back it up to, plus the screen is so badly damaged she cant see anything on it.
she's not techy AT ALL so removing the HDD is not an option.

whats the best way she can get the screen replaced? does toshiba wipe hard drives on every repair like HP do?
should she send it off to toshiba to be replaced, or get a small independant shop to sort it for her? how much do you think it would cost?
she needs it before she goes back to university in about 2-3 weeks.

    cheers.

She could hook it up to an external monitor and use an external HD to back up her data. I'm not sure how much it'd cost toshiba to replace it... probably in the 100s. I've had to replace LCDs... usually I buy a compatible one for a little over 100 on ebay and replace it because the cost of having it done by any sort of technical support company is prohibitive.

she doesnt have an external hard drive. currently looking at online storage to backup everything. a pain, but its free if we get it right. anything else can go on DVDs.
we do have a monitor that we could hook up, but we cant set the settings without the laptop screen functioning atleast temperarally. (the monitor is a 17inch square, her screen is a widescreen, and it wont change resolution automaticly).

if its in the hundreds i think we may have a serious problem. anyone else know how much they cost?

Hooking the laptop up to an external monitor would be your best short fix. Just adjust the resolution so it looks normal since most likely your setting will be for widescreen. I use to be a Toshiba technician so I know how to replace my own LCDs so it's usually just the cost of one off Ebay $100-$250. You could also remove the hard drive, but a 2.5" HDD external case and just run it off another computer.
