I'm thinking to upgrade the DDR1 memory(pc2700) of my Satellite A35-S159. It seems that DDR2 memory sticks are much cheaper than DDR1. I'm wondering if I could replace my DDR1 with DDR2, say pc4200. If DDR2 is put on the notebook, will it cause any damage? Thanks for any comments in advance.

No. Memory controllers are made for specific memory type.
Its even unlikely you will be able to put DDR2 stick in the DDR slot, they have different keys (notches).

Different memory controllers, voltages, and pin outs. In short, impossible.
