my sister have a satellite 5105 s510 its an old laptop and the problem is that i have some backup cds and the cd drive cant read them,it only reads games and movies (original and the backup ones i have madewith another laptop). The only thing i have changed is the original burning software that came with it drag n drop and installed nero 6.Its really annoying ,a lot of the data cds i have burned cant be read by the cd driver i dont know what is the problem, any help?
    its a mat****a driver UJDA730
the only cds i cant read are the data cds,i have burned a cd in that laptop but it cant read it either.
and whe i go to my computer and i look at the cd drive with a cd on, it shows the cd drive icon and i click on it and it shows as free space 0 bytes and total sise 0 bytes too,i can hear that the driver tries to read the cd but then it stops and the it tries again and then it stops

A firmware update if available may help.

Have you tried using another computer to read the CDs? I have that model and my drive is perfectly fine (although it struggles with newer DVDs). I'd try updating the software through the control panel as zaz has suggested.

Also the CD drive might be going. I had a 5005-S504 and it never did work right from the beginning. If worst came to worst, you could get a new cd-rw or dvd-r from newegg.com or elsewhere and install it for under $100.

I've just tried updating my drivers but found no newer ones. I'd still try updating your and seeing if that came out with anything. I've also found the drives in these notebooks to be very finicky. For example, in my drive it sometimes will and won't play DVDs depending upon what software I use and how new the DVDs are. I haven't however, been experiencing the CD reading issues you have.

I have Memorex CD-R's and they work fine in my super-multi dvd-r drive. I bought Staples brand DVD+R's and they work great. Toshiba drives can only burn at 8x anyway, but 16x should be able to work also.

I will agree with Jenson. You can get whatever speed, they will just get burnt at the slower speed. Memorex is a good brand and so is Verbatum.

If you want the best blanks I would suggest some Taiyo Yudens. You can get them at Rima.com amongst others. Verbatims are usually good. Memorex's quality is all over the place.

Staples or Philips is unlikely to make their own blanks, but rather slap their name on another brand. You can use DVD Idenitifier to find out who makes them. I gotta imagine someone over there sell TYs. Perhaps a Google seatch will reveal some answers.
