As you can see from the Title, my cpu fan is turning up waaaay to high, but not steadily. It's up and down, but it sure is something new.
I can't see anything that's drawing on the cpu more than usual (more than before) but obviously it is.
Is there something like a quick fix for this, or is this more complicated that I want it to be.
I've a Toshiba P200 with Vista Home Premium Service Pak 1.

Monitor your CPU temp may be good idea and if there is temp rising problem, then it might be due to dust or thermal problem, search for cleanup guide may help you.

Thank you for your reply daljeet. I don't believe this is a *dust on the lenses* thing, but when I sometimes even move the mouse, it will increase the cpu fan speed --- but not all the time.
Other times, and this has only been happening recently in the last several days, if I open up another tab in Opera (or Firefox) lo & behold, the cpu fan will spin up to where I think this laptop is going to go out into orbit.
I've watched the cpu consumption in Taskmanager, and it will be going from 1% then suddenly without warning, will jump to 20-30% then back down again.
So I'm thinking this is software related, but the weird and wonderful thing is, it only began lately --- and no new software loaded.
If you (or some other happy individual) on this forum has something up your (or their) sleeve, pass it along. I'll appreciate the help.
(Please type all answers very slowly so I will be able to understand them)

Hey..I wasn't aware of this problem until I saw your thread...then I checked my task manager and realized I'm having the exact same problem as you. I'm not sure...but maybe my laptop needs a good rest. I've been downloading stuff and haven't shut down or let it go to sleep for 2 weeks already...I wonder whether you're also having the problem due to just plugging it in the AC and just leaving it on?

I run battery power usually once a day till this rig needs to be recharged.
Does your cpu fan keep reving up and then slowing down? Whatever this is, it started once a ways back and I did a system restore and that fixed it. This time, I couldn't do the restore. I was told it wasn't successful and now trying that today, it only goes back to the 27 of November, a day after this snag came to be.
Let's see if someone who has the trick up their sleeve will come in on this with a fix.

hmmm...ok...yea...It just goes on high...then goes down again...then up again....it's driving me mad and making me worried too...I really have no idea what to do now......someone please help.... this X305 is just 2 months old and i have 4 yrs of college to go through...arghhh...

Maybe i'll try shutting down my computer for a full day and give it a break

the weird thing is I've looked at the proccesses whenever it goes on high and I do not see ANYTHING that adds up to 80%...the highest is 30 for firefox and the rest is just 1 and 2%.....i added it up and it doesn't even go up to 50% yet it says it's on above 87%....how about you?

This is not an easy thing to overcome. Looking over the forums, it seems every case is different and that's why there's not a whole lot rolling in on this thread either. In other words, it's too crowded here and that's why people aren't coming in anymore!?!

I just realized...my performance in the task manager states that I have no free memory left. I think this is my problem...maybe I need to let it restart or shut down for a while.

I see, then try disk cleanup , disk defragmenter and disable programs from msconfig which are not required, and removing temp file or cache file of browsers may help you.

I'm envious Itachipawns --- I've tried that here, and soon as I start it up again, I'm afraid this rig is going to spin up so fast, it will burst into a ball of flames!?!
I'm positive it's software related, but to figure this out would be a full time job.
Anyway, I'm happy your problem resolved itself.

Done all that daljeet, but to no effect. It is not that the fan is making a noise as when a bearing is gone, it is simply reving up and down, and not steadily. It can be quiet for a few minutes and as soon as one scrolls for instance, or checks
e-mail, loads another page, it whirls up and then down.
It never has done this in the year and half but once, and that was fixed by a system restore, which implies it's a software issue.
Thanks for your comments and efforts.
