Can I upgrade my CPU on my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960 to a Centrino i3 so I can have Virtual Technology? How do I find out what chip set I have and if it is compatible with a upgrade?

Download CPUz, it should tell you your chipset.

Report back when you know it :)

On my Toshiba A505-S6960 the chipset is Intel GM45/GM47 Rev 07
    Southbridge Intel 82891M (ICH9-M)
    BIOS BRAND INSYDE
    VERSION 1.40
    DATE 06/08/2009
Thanks for the CPU-Z download info.
There are some pretty good New laptops out now with the Core 2 duo and the i3 processor but can I use my 7 Pro that I have just loaded on this laptop?

Generally if your notebook didn't come with an i-series processor you can't upgrade TO and i-series. The i3/i5/i7 use a new processor socket and is physically different than the Core 2 Duo's, Celerons, and Pentium Dual-Cores.

I have been to the Intel web site and according to them my processor is a Intel Core 2 duo mobile. They list all the processors that have VVT and the ones that don't. There is no reference to the Intel chip set on the motherboard and what works with them.
There are many Core 2 Duo processors that will do what I want. I just wonder why they skipped allowing the T6500 from running Virtual Visualization Technology?? I am happy with my laptop except for that reason. If the Intel list shows all the different "T" prefix processors does that mean they are all the architecture? Would I have to get new drivers to make the processor and chipset compatible? Or is that possible?

The "core 2" chips are all the same architecture.

You wont need to install new drivers or anything.

Just go to the toshiba website and update your BIOS.

I have been to several "companys" and no one seems to carry this type processor. All the rage now is the i3,i5,i7 architecture. And I am almost afraid of buying on "Ebay". You never know what you will get!!
I looked again at my CPU-z and it is a P(478). Does the P stand for Pentium?

No, it stands for socket P.

You do need to buy on ebay, I have done it many times and it's fine.

Or you can buy from the NBR market place.

With the "P" processor do I have to stay with the 800 mhz front side buss or can I buy a 1066 fsb?
NewEgg seems to have the best supply of Core 2 duo CPU's but only one with 800 FSB.

    1066mhz FSB CPUs will work.
