Back everything up and do a factory restore.

Yes, what Hockeymass said, back everything up (or at least the important files) and do a system recovery with the System Discs.

How much free space is left on your harddrive? I've seen laptops come to a halt when there isn't enough free space for the system to function.

Could also be a sign that the Harddrive is failing.

Keep us posted with any results.

The formatted capacity is always less than the printed capacity. So when it says 55gb, its most likely a 60gb HDD. And when it says you have 36gb out of 55, it means you've used 19gb of space so far.
