I just purchased a Toshiba Portege M800 from my school. When collecting the laptop they made me run through a list of checks, of which the last check was to check for dead pixels. I found one on the screen, but then they said that Toshiba wouldnt change it for me.

Should I accept a new laptop with a defect???

I would say it depends on where the dead pixel is. If it's off in some unused corner or the very top/bottom/side, I wouldn't worry about it and would accept it. If it's somewhere that could potentially hinder the viewing experience, then I'd be wary about accepting it. If you can get a different computer of the same model/specs or a complete refund when you refuse it, then it probably wouldn't hurt to try to get one without a dead pixel.

I'd refuse it. Knowing it has a defect, no matter how small, BEFORE I bought it is a dealbreaker, unless, of course, I am given some sort of generous discount.

It would bother me, even though it is a relatively minor item. I'd definitely refuse it.

theres a warranty for dead pixels.
The only way the units replacable if it has 3 or more dead pixels, theres a card comparing the number of dead pixels and stuff. check the items inside the box

My concern, as a consumer, is that I should not even have to consider accessing the warranty if I have not even purchased the unit yet. In other words, if I already know there is a problem with it, I am going to avoid the hassles later on by insisting on a different machine before I put down my money on the deal.

ya i agree that much as the pixel is small.. it bothers me to know that it is there. if i had already taken the laptop home then the fault would be on my part for not checking. but i havent even taken the laptop! toshiba refuses to change though. they said that one dead pixel is not a defect.
