I just got my first labtop for a christmas gift and it is a Toshiba M35X-S149. I have a 2wire modem that already includes wirless for additional computers, so I have no need for a router, but I keep hearing that I need a PC or PCMCI card to insert into the side of the labtop for internet access...could you please help me

Most new laptops have their own built in wireless card so you probably shouldn't buy one .
It is internal in a form of mini-pci card , check your spec sheet and the laptop underside for a mini pci cover , open it and see if there is a card inside .
Don't know if your model has accessiable cover tough . -

I think you were being told you needed a PC card or Pcmcia card, which you don't as it is builtin to your computer already.

Try turning the built-in wireless on. There is a switch on the right side of your laptop. When the switch is activated a small amber colored light will glow until you turn the wireless on. When you turn it on it will automatically search for all networks in it's range. However, just make sure that your network isn't secured or else you will have to tell the computer the wireless channel, IP address, etc. Hope this helps!

In the event you didn't buy your Toshiba notebook configured with wireless support, you would then need to either buy a USB/PCMCIA Wireless adapter or get the original Toshiba Wireless Mini-PCI card for your notebook (best option, but probably most expensive).
If you already have wireless built-in, just turn it on as Toshibam35x mentioned and config accordingly on your 2wire modem & notebook. Just make sure you enable encryption, otherwise people will be able to access your network and all the data you're transmitting.
