    Hi all,

Does anyone else have the issue where the DVD drive gets accessed intermittently in Windows 8.1?

I do not have any disc inserted, but from time to time I hear the drive being accessed/checked.

I do. I have P50t-B-10T and the BD-RE drive gets accessed every few minutes. So far, I don't know what's causing it. Also, if there is a disk inserted, drive will spin it up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue.

I managed to find something remotely similar to this issue on Superuser. People there suggest that the problem could be related to BIOS/UEFI or bad drivers. In any case, it's a bit weird.

Is there anyone with this laptop that does not get the issue?

Which optical drive is your computer using? Mine is MATA UJ272 (the company that runs Panasonic brand). If yours is different, then the source is probably not the drive itself.

    Workaround for the issue:

Keeping a disk in drive for me drastically reduces the noise created. Once every few weeks, the disk will spin up to very high speed and can get damaged.

I also updated my laptop to UEFI version 1.5 and now, without disk in drive, the drive will eject instead of trying to access disk. The frequency of ejections is drastically reduced. it only happens around once a day.
