Hello to all I have an older pentium 4 toshiba laptop model 2405 s201 1.6ghz 512mb ram 40gb harddrive

the problem is on a fresh xp install the laptop reacts slow when I go to task manager the cpu usage stays anywhere from 90-100% and certain process take up alot for example taskmanger uses anywhere from 15-20% percent at any given time. I tried to install different drivers same problem I dont know what else to try, I have ran a fresh install of xp on P3 laptops and got alot better response than this pentium 4, anyone have any suggestions? they will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Is there any one process, or a specific few that are hogging CPU? If so, what are they?

    Thanks for the reply's guys

Its a pentium 4 I dont believe its a mobile version

its seems like different processes are hogging at different times, the one in particular is task manager process, for example while the laptop is sitting idle the task manager is taking about 12% (and I did not mention earlier that I do have avg antivirus installed and also a mini pci wireless card) the wireless is disabled at the moment and avg is also idle(the only time it hogs the cpu when it was scanning the system or downloading an update) also if I click the start button the taskmanager processor will jump to about 55% and when I open up ms paint it jump to 100% and the system acted real slow, and it does that if I try to open anything ex. "mycompuer"

for some reason this laptop runs like a pentium 2 system with only 64mb installed
