All... I've never found any specs listed on a qosmio (new or old) about what type of backlight it uses on its screens. LED or CCFL?

Ive had folks on the forums tell me that the pre-sandybridge models were CCFL though.

I chatted with a toshiba direct rep last night and they told me the sandybridge models were LED backlit... I said that was great and asked about the older ones and was told they were ALL LED backlit.

So anyone that has a Qosmio, have any enlightenment about the screens? Have they always been LED backlit, at least the 500 and 505 series.

    Thanks

Pre-Sandy Bridge has CCFL screens (still look pretty good).

I thought SB Qosmios also had CCFL, but I could be wrong. I would assume CCFL.

    *EDIT*

Also, you might hear of the 1080p screens being "dark" or "dim". That was the case prior to the 2.90 BIOS release. Doubled to tripled brightness (BIOS made 1080p screens as bright as the 945p screens).

I'm assuming the SB Qosmios should ship with a 2.90+ BIOS, so ignore that issue.

From everything ive seen/read I had assumed CCFL screens as well, sounds like the toshiba direct person doesn't know what their talking about.

I was hoping for a LED backlit as ive seen units with the shadow/stripe along the taskbar area at the bottom of the screen due to uneven backlight on the 1080p screen and I was hoping LED would fix that. Oh well.

How portable is your Qosimo alexmuw? I'm considering it because it'd make a really nice laptop for watching movies. But I'm concerned about portability. I have a 14" Thinkpad R51 now that's fine...not large or anything but fine. I don't prefer large laptops, but portability (and lapability) is kind of nice.

So how large is it really? compared to a 15 or 17 incher? Noticibly larger or just kind of? How large is the brick?

I might just get the qosmio and a netbook...

Im looking at the qosmio for all that screen real estate, i do 3d art, animation, programming and desktop publishing and 15" screens just aren't cutting it anymore and most of my 'portable' needs like email/web etc have been on my ipad for the past year so portability is secondary to an extent although I still want a laptop.

I actually don't have my Qosmio anymore, I exchanged it for a SB Qosmio which was later recalled, so I returned. Just impatiently waiting like you guys :D

Actually, the Qosmio is fairly larger than a 17.3" laptop (i know it's only 1 inch larger, but it's just seems so much bigger). I look at it as a TRUE desktop replacement. I really LOVE the large screen. Makes writing papers, and playing games FUN!! (once you go 18.4, it's hard to go back). It's not LED, but the screen still looks awesome!

The Qosmio is a good 10 lbs (if not 11). The battery on the 1st-gen i7 got about 2.25 to 2.5 hours (I'm hoping the SB Qosmio will get at least 3 hours; 12 cell battery); so it has some portability to it. I did carry my Qosmio around the house, but it can get heavy. I never used it on my lap, always on a table or desk.

Like you, I'm actually getting a second, "cheap" laptop to lug around to class and such (was thinking maybe HP dm1z or a similar netbook). That way I can pamper my Qosmio and leave it at home, while abusing my secondary laptop while commuting.

It's actually pretty good and does a good job explaining the pros and cons of the system (the cons I agree with, very minor). I think he reviewed the q898 system (they gave it 4.5/5 stars)

The only confirmed, fixed, SB Qosmio is the one offered by ToshibaDirect (x500-q930X). However, it is the MOST expensive model offered by Toshiba, $1900. Thus, I'm waiting. Hopefully the other lower models will come out soon.
