Anybody know if the optical drive will come out, without taking the whole thing apart? Satellite L25-S1196

There is one screw on the bottom of the laptop and the other you have to pull up the keyboard for.

to pull up the keyboard, remove the 2 screws in the base that have either a "k" next to them or a little picture of a keyboard. then remove the 2 small shiney screws from the rear of the laptop. This will allow you to pull the cover off of the hinge/power button. Just hook somethign into the part that covers the LCD hinge and pull up gently. It will take a little bit of force to get it off, but you wont break anything.

After you have this cover off, lift the keyboard up (there are no more screws holding it down). Once the keyboard is up you will see the corner of the DVD drive in the lower right corner where the keyboard generally resides. there are 2 screws here. Remove the one that is screwed into a shiney metal piece.

After all of that is taken care of, just slide the drive out. There will be a fair amount of resistance because Toshiba uses a few pieces of foam to stabalize the drive in the drive bay. Its best to push the drive out from above where you last removed a screw. Try not to pull on the drive from the drive tray as you can actually pull the entire tray assembly off and break the drive.

As far as new drives, any standard drive should work. Just make sure it is a master or slave drive. Toshibas dont like cable select drives. I cannot remember if this specific model has this issue, but its always best to stay away from cable select drives for Toshiba models to eliminate possible incompatiblities.

I hope this was of some help. If you need any other info on the L25 feel free to ask.

I surely do appreciate that info. I was able to remove the dvd drive as you described, however on this unit, there wasn't any markings so I had to guess as to which screws were holding the keyboard? But again, I got it out & replaced.... Thanks again for the help.
