    hey everyone,

i ordered a customized satellite laptop over 2 weeks ago. it will be arriving at my house on wednesday via fedex. i broke down and ordered a better priced one from newegg...i was just tired of waiting.

toshiba says that their laptops are subject to a 15% restocking fee. any tips on how i get the laptop returned without getting hit by the restocking fee? again, i have not gotten it yet.

oh yes and i charged it via american express. so i could always dispute the 15%...but i would rather it not come to that.

Most major dealers don't really care about the 15% and just do it to discourage returns. If you call them, explain why you are returning it and that it is unopened, and maybe complain a little then you should have no problem getting the 15% restocking fee waived. You will still have to pay shipping back to them, however.

That is kinda what I figured. Do you think calling them, and asking them if I could refuse the package would work?

It might. Some companies do not like it when you refuse the package for some reason, maybe they are scared of it getting lost and losing money.

If Toshiba is not "at fault" for the return, then you can't dispute it with your credit card company. Technically they reserve the right to charge a restocking fee on returns.

You are correct about this. They have not done anything wrong. However, the wait time for this laptop has been quite LONG. I feel like I ordered it forever ago.

UPDATE: Toshiba customer care was nice enough to not charge me the 15% restocking fee and said that I could simply refuse the package via FedEx. So, all I am left paying for is the "free" accessories that were shipped to me earlier. THANKS TOSHIBA! Well...I'm getting a Toshiba anyway...so they are still selling units...one way or another.

I think charging a restocking fee for an unopened product is not right.

It's hard to defend a company charging a restocking fee on a standard, unopened product, but charging a restocking fee for a customized to order product has merit.

I thought about that when I wrote the reply, how long should it really take for them to resell it. Can't be that long before someone configures it the same way.

Say there are 7 different components, with 4 choices each. That's a total of 16,384 different configurations.
