i have looked at the partitions i have, i have a partition called recoverable, one called system which is hidden and one which has the os on it. If i install linux on to that whole partition, would i then be able to still use the laptops system recovery option to restore back to factory defaults which is vista?

It might be better to use resize the partition with the OS (assuming that is the big one) and create a new one out of the space. Use that new partition for Linux. This way you can have a dual-boot between Linux and Windows which will be helpful when you encounter stuff that only works in Windows.

ok thanks. I actually use vmware to run xp as i don't like vista but i might resize and leave only the amount vista needs then install linuz on new one and run the virtual xp for the windows apps and not touch vista thanks
