i did a few searches and didn't see a definitive answer on this so apologies if it has been discussed.

i bought a x205-ss9349 a while back and love it. i have no problems playing hd dvd's or outputting my screen image to my hdtv. however, there's no sound on the tv when i use the hdmi cable.

i thought hdmi covered sound. does it not work that way with this laptop? if not, how am i supposed to output sound? i've tried switching the audio devices to either the hdmi output or the digital out and i still get nothing.

if anyone can shed some light on this or point me to a web site that better explains how to get hdmi or digital sound out of my laptop and into my tv/audio receiver, that would be great.

    thanks!

Well you have to go to Control Panel and sound&audio options and change the output mode to HDMI then you will have sound but after you watched your movie you have to switch back but it works too bad it not switching automatically, but at least it works.
    Enjoy

i thought i had tried that but i'll try again.

this might be a silly question, but will that work for any audio while using the hdmi cable? meaning, an hd dvd or a video game that i'm sending out via hdmi, either way i'll get audio thru my tv?

and what's the s/pdif output used for? is that the digital out choice on my sound controller panel? what would i plug that into? an external speaker system (5.1 or something)? my a/v receiver?

    thanks again!

The HDMI audio output is set by right-clicking on the speaker icon, selecting "Playback Devices", clicking once on HDMI output and hitting the "Set Default" button.

The S/PDIF output is an optical TOS-LINK output next to your headphone jack. You need a 3.5mm adapter to attach to a regular optical cable. This can output 5.1CH audio if you have it set that way and yes, you can attach it to your A/V receiver for sound. I use mine to hook up to a pair of 5.1CH CyberHome headphones for games and music, and it works great.

thanks for the replies and explanations! i have the hdmi audio working just fine now.

sadly i don't think my a/v receiver will let me play with the s/pdif output, but i'll double check that later when i get back home. i'll definitely have to buy some new cables to hook that up, but at least i know what to do with it now.

    thanks again!

since i dont have an HD tv i use the optical 3.5mm to toslink and i get dolby digital 5.1 through my receiver (make sure your receiver has dolby digital filters). You just have to remember to set the audio output to S/PDIF in the sound settings, and also if your watching a dvd or whatever make sure that the sound settings on the actual DVD are also set to dolby digital 5.1.
