yeah so ive got this problem...
i have the laptop set so that when i press the power button it will go into standby mode (which is where i usually leave it in most of the time so i dont have to boot up and wait). so when i open the lid, it automatically comes out of standby mode. recently, when i open the lid the screen doesnt turn on. the computer turns on normally but i dont get any picture!! when this happens i have to turn off the computer by holding the power button then turn on again. this is VERY annoying and its happening about 4 out of 10 times. i have no idea why its happening, BUT i think i have noticed that it only happens when the laptop is unplugged from ac power.
ie, i go into standby mode at my desk pluged in, then i unplug the cables etc, put everything in my bag and leave. when i get to the library, open the lid on battery power and no picture. this isnt good

When you power it back on, do you move the mouse around and check to make sure that it is not "sleeping"? That's probably not your problem, but it's worth a shot?? Hope you get your problem fixed.
