Bought Toshiba A665-S5199x in Septmeber. Recently began having screen problem. First, black blob appeared on upper right. then, lots of vertical and horizontal lines, then screen rolls, everything is at least double, and cannot access shutdown at bottom of screen.

toshiba told me on the phone that Ai damaged the screen -- 10000% unture. furthermore, the warranty does not cover screen.

What should I do? ii paid $699 for this laptop and it's a goner in 3 months!!

First and foremost, lets find out what the problem is. Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop through the VGA port, if the image looks ok on the external monitor, then your screen is bad. If the image still looks bad, then could be something wrong with your graphics processor.

Second, where did you buy your laptop? Contact the retailer and see if they can help. If they redirect you to Toshiba, then contact the BBB.

If Toshiba will still not help, and only the screen is bad [based on step 1], then usually can go to a local repair shop and have them replace the screen for $100 or so. Will void your Toshiba warranty, but at this point Toshiba won't help you anyway,s right ?

Good luck and keep us posted with any updates.

    Thanks.

I already tried the external monitor and it works, which I consider bad news.

I bought it in Costco. Unfortunately for me, I was out of the country (with the laptop) for about 5 weeks during which time this happened. Came back after the Costco 90 days return limit. I expect to go there tomorrow with all original items and box, but their rep at their concierge service said they are very strict about the 90 days deadline.

Would it be typical that a screen, which is clearly undamaged externally, would not be covered in a warranty? Crazy!

its better news that its the screen thats damaged not the motherboard, a lot cheaper to sort

looks like you will have to take the hit though if toshiba aren't willing to help.

there is also a possibility that something has come loose, specifically the vga ribbon connector on the motherboard or in the back of the screen. if you are reasonable technically able and willing to try, i would get hold of the service manual for the laptop and follow instructions to access the necessary items to check for loose connections (well technically i wouldnt, i'd just start taking screws out and see what happened, but thats just me!lol!) if however the thought of this sends a cold shiver down your spine, i'd leave it to a pro repair shop to sort.

Contact Costco Concierge Service, they are usually very good with their products and tech support.

They should contact Toshiba and help you troubleshoot the problem.

Yes, Concierge service was sure that Toshiba would take care of it.
My problem is that Toshiba says screen is not warranteed.
Further, they claim, sight unseen, that I damaged it, which I did not.

Contact Costco Concierge again and tell them Toshiba refuses to fix it, maybe Costco will give you some options.

If that doesn't work, try going back to your "warehouse" location and bringing the laptop with you + receipt. Show them the screen and say you need a resolution: new unit or refund. [all should go well as long as no signs of damage].

I had a SONY TV that had the infamous "blue blob" syndrome on their LCD screen. Costco replaced my TV for free with a new SONY Bravia 55", even though my defective TV was 4 years old. It's worth a shot.

Good luck and keep us posted with any updates.

It was not easy, but I convinced Costco to take it back.
Now I have to begin again searching for a new laptop.

    thanks.

Awesome! Like I said, Costco is usually pretty good. It might have taken some effort, but you got them to take it back. Just think if you bought it from a different retailer, you'd still be stuck with it.

If I were you, I would stick with Costco. Also, check out their website, as they have laptops on their site they don't offer in their warehouse.

    Good luck
