You need to reset the Bios. This is different for most every machine and I'm not entirely sure how to do it on a Toshiba. Somewhere there should be a jumper that you need to move to initiate a reset. This will clear out the entire Bios but shouldn't screw up anything. This jumper is generally near the battery, though again, I don't know where it is on your machine.

I believe to remove a password from the Toshiba units, you need a special adapter/dongle that gets attached to the LPT port before powerup. AFter the unit is turned on with the adapter connected, the password is automatically removed. I've done this on the older Toshibas (Tecra 8200 & older) and they work, but not too sure with the new units. Just take the unit to an authorized service center and they will usually do it for you for approx. $100 CDN.

If you tried one of the original Toshiba dongles and that didn't work, they possibly changed the dongle (maybe USB) or possibly they've gone back to the old battery & jumper technique. I'll check with a friend of mine and let you know what they're currently doing.

I've asked around about your unit, and it looks like there's a utility & a bunch of key strokes you have to hit for it to clear. This is currently all the info I could get, but still digging!

    Simlock,

Give the following a try and see if it works:

    1. Plug unit in
    2. Turn on the computer while pressing the "Esc" key.
    3. As soon as the "Password=" appears, press the key combination that will be provided to you.
    4. Enter the response code that is given to you accurately. An invalid entry will cause the computer to shut down.
    5. As soon as the response code is accepted, press the "F1" key when prompted, to go to the BIOS set-up.
    6. Go to the Password section and press the Space bar at "Password=Registered" field.
    7. When prompted for "Password=", press Space bar and then Enter.
    8. When prompted for "New Password=", press Enter .
    9. When prompted for "Verify Password=" press Enter.
    10. Press the "End" key to save the changes and exit the BIOS settings.
    11. Press "Y" to confirm save and exit.

If this doesn't work, I'm sorry to say that you're S.O.L. unless you send the unit into a service center (not Toshiba) & have them do the removal.

There is one other way to get the password removed, but your system still has to be under warranty for it to work because it requires a systemboard replacement. Just call Toshiba & say that your system is having an INTERMITTENT problem. You MUST say "intermittent" because if they get the system and they can't reproduce the problem, you'll get it back untouched. Just say the system sometimes doesn't boot or it sometimes hangs at powerup. If they ask you if it has a Password when they're servicing it, just tell them no.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

You don't hit escape after the "Password=" displays, you have to hold down the ESC key & while holding it down, you hit the power button while still holding the ESC key, until "Password=" appears. When it does, it should give you a key combo to hit. Just follow the instructions on your screen and what I posted and it should work.

One way to reset the BIOS password is to take the CMOS battery out for a few minutes and put it back in. On a laptop that might be tricky to get to.

Removing the CMOS battery and the parallel port plug will not work on Tecra M1. The only way to remove the BIOS password from Tecra M1 is to bring it to a Toshiba repair center. To remove the BIOS password, a special code has to be entered. I believe only an authorized Toshiba repair technician can get this code. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This method mentions 720kb diskette. I've never seen one, so I did a quick search on Google for the term "720kb diskette" and here's what I found. :D
<blockquote>Early 3.5-inch diskettes could hold 720KB of data. Because it had less storage capacity than the high-density 5.25-inch diskette, the original 3.5-inch was never widely used. However, in 1987 IBM introduced the 1.44MB version of the smaller diskette</blockquote>
I think that the method mentioned in the link did work 10-15years ago, but I'm not really sure that it will work on modern Toshibas.

You need to do this... To reset the bios, you will need to take art your laptop and disconnect this for the Tecra 8200

I have this issue, too. My original M1's video chip started acting up so I got a used M1 for parts which has a working motherboard and video chip, but is password protected. I tried the parallel port thing, unplugged the RTC battery for a day, tried the backdoor password, nothing worked so far.
So there are 2 small chips by the RTC battery, I suspect one of them is an NVRAM type of memory (doesn't lose it's information when power is cut), that's why it still holds the password. I was thinking about removing those chips from my original board and soldering them on the new one, but those things are so damn small, I'd need some professional soldering tool.
Does anyone have any new information on this?

If you have a problem with the Toshiba passwords, you need to contact Toshiba. Discussions on how to circumvent security measures are not allowed on this forum.
