i'm trying to locate copies of the recovery cds. coworker is passing this laptop on to a relative and i need to sanitize and reinstall.
should i continue to look for these cds so the copy of xp is legal or can i use any oem xp cd and use the key on the back and still have it work?

Lately I have had some good luck on using an OEM disk with the COA on the bottom. I was using older laptops about 3-4 years old. 1 of them didn't activate and I called the "800" number it gave and I talked the guy into activating it. There are a couple of sellers on eCRATER that are selling restore disks. Search for "Toshiba restore" in the computer category.

If you can find a OEM CD and your key doesn't work, you can use the key from the. XP's activation program allows you to change the key, at which point you can change it to your key and activate, provided it's the same version. I've done this many times. Hasn't failed me yet.
