I have the X505 q892 with an i5 460m CPU. I was wondering if I could upgrade the CPU in the future to a quad core i7 or Sandy Bridge. Is this possible?

I dont think so, and forget SB, because you will need to replace the mainboard

SB will be included(integrated) in new motherboards.

My understanding is that mobile i7(lower end) and mobile i5 share a lot of commonalities. However, the motherboard for an i7 holds 4 cores, the mother board for an i5 only holds 2. Thus, you'll need a new motherboard and more cores to get to an i7.

from what i gathered the qm series uses the ΜPGA-988 socket and the i5 mobile uses the µPGA-989 socket from that it looks like it wouldnt work.

T_T *sobbing & and asking in a crackly voice* where'd you get this information?

Tunay, no it's not, I'm reviving it. And all the knowledgeable peeps are here, the ones that built the X305 community and posted schematics on how to open up and upgrade that baby. Now I want us to start up an X505 community very similar to the X305 thread. I still love my X305 and infact I'm typing this on it, while giving my X505 the cold shoulder. Maybe you should upgrade too, Tunay, seeing that you're one of the most dedicated ones helping out on the Toshiba forums. Hopefully the other guys like dude and the others get an X505 and help me out here. Anyway, I'll leave this one here hoping I get a response from one of those geniuses and ask again on the Hardware Components forum. Thanks.

Is there a guide to disassemble the x505? I know taking apart Toshbia's are a pain. I did it before for a satillate. I have a chance to get an i7 940xm processor (trade to settle a debt)-i'm not buying it, just trading for it. I tried asking in another forum, just got replies for how great sandy bridge will be, its a waste of money (I'm not buying it); Sell my lappy and get better one blah, blah. Would anyone in this forum have any idea about:

    1] Would the i7 940xm work in my x505-898?

2] would it be to hot?

I'm not an over clocker, but if I can get the i7 940xm basically for free I just want to know can I use it in my lappy.

    Thanks

My guess is that you can upgrade WITHIN the current chipset with no problems, meaning that if you have an i5, you can swap out another i5, and if you have an i7, you can swap out another i7. However, I am almost 100% sure that the motherboards for the i5 is different than the mobo for the i7, thus they are NOT compatible for cross-upgrading, at least not without swapping out the entire mobo.
