i was scavenging through multiple threads and found no similar one so i thought id post this, i have been looking to upgrade the gpu of my qosmio and i was looking through ebay and one seller has posted a 670m for sale which he had taken out from a x875 now what hit me was the part where he stated he had tested this card in an alienware m17x r4 which i am able to derive that toshiba uses a standard mxm port and not one of their own hence making the upgrade ability much more possible
im looking to upgrade to a 680m or 675mx , i know the question arises with regard to getting the card to be detected

all advice regarding this half baked solution is greatly appreciated , this is my first post on nbr and i do apologize if i have gone against any guidelines

First you need to go to toshiba and use your serial number to find out which exact model lineup your laptop is then tell us what the model list it as. Then other can go from there to see what your specs are or if you can find the pdf spec sheet from Toshiba and post that link so others can have a better look to see what is and isn't expandedable on the laptop. That should be the first step to start.

well mine isnt the average qosmio x875-q7290 thats for sale

specs i tried putting it in my sig didnt seem to work out

    nevertheless

    Specs
    CPU: intel 3rd gen i7 3840QM
    HDD: MIcron C400 512gb SSD
    RAM: 32gigs 1600 mhz (8 x 4 sticks)
    display: 3D 120HZ panel (standard)
    GPU: nvidia gtx 670m

for a fact i know in previous threads when users asked toshiba if their gpu can be upgraded , they indirectly said yes their reply was phrased as "toshiba does not officially support such upgrades"

i also took my machine for a clean up and the nail postions were in a square form which might be further proof its using a standard mxm 3.0 or 3.0b slot

I've upgraded the processors on several Toshiba;'s in the past with no issues.

I currently have an X875 also, but as yet I have no plans for upgrading it's cpu.

You have to first look and see what the chipset and the socket support. Then look at the wattage rating for the heatsink.
If you have an i3 or i5 cpu, you will also have to research the part numbers for the heatsink to see if a different one is used for the lower power cpu's

Once you have confirmed the above information, you should have no trouble upgrading.

Do not exceed the wattage rating of the heatsink by more than 5 watts, or you will likely experience over heating.

I think the OP is asking about GPU not CPU to very different hardware doing two very different things......

Oh, then he is likely screwed. Toshiba has never made a system with a standard graphics card, so only another card from an X870 or X875 will likely work.

thats what i also thought first but this guy seems to give me hope he states he tested the card both in a x875 and a m17x r4 which makes me to believe that there is no compatibility issues and also that even the vbios maybe very simillar i woud relly love to upgrade my qosmio since it being a very splendid machine , i will post a picture of the nail positions of the card whichis also a hint that the card is standard mxm 3.0 and not toshibas own twist
