so i already ordered a hard drive replacement for my 4200/160gb that came w/the machine, a 7200/100gb/2.5"
but now as per discussion in another thread, i've started worrying about the new one fitting. i never questioned 'size' as i was making sure the hitachi travelstar i bought would be compatible, sata, 2.5, etc is what i focused on.
but now i read that the travelstar is 9.5 inches, and in my manual it reads my hard drive is, quote, "12.5mm height" - i'm not sure the 12.5mm height and the 9.5 inches listed at newegg are even refering to the same measurement, but i'm scared.
anyone know? i really don't want to have to deal w/the hassle of returning a product to an internet company, and im even more worried about the idea that i cannot ever upgrade my 4200rpm hard drive.

9.5 inches?
That's one huge hard drive.
I think there's a typo somewhere.

should be 9.5mm, not 9.5 inches?.
Notebooks hold 2.5" / 9.5mm hard drives. You should be fine as far as 'fit' goes.
I just upgraded mine to a 100GB 7200rpm Hitachi. It's a little bit louder during seek, but the heat is not an issue. The Hitachi is generally faster than the quieter Seagate Momentus. -
ya mm sorry, not 9.5 inches :-\
so the fact that it's smaller shouldn't be a problem? i understand smaller things fit into where bigger things were, i'm just worried about it being elevated or something because the connections are near the top of the place where the drive goes.
but you're saying you did exactly what i did i think? hitachi 100/7200 into a p105-s921? hope so cus that'd make me worry less! -
no. my toshiba is an M115.
What makes you think the HDD in your p105 is larger than a 2.5 inch HDD? -
Orion, the 9.5mm and 12.5mm refer to the height of the drive not the width. ALL notebook HD are 2.5 inches wide. Now, who decided to use inches for the width and mm for the height, beats me, but 12.5mm drives I am pretty sure are becoming obsolete. I checked Hitachi and Seagate drives, even the larger 160GB (which are the ones you'd expect to be taller) and they are now 9.5mm.
So, what does that mean? Your upgrading choices are limited to 9.5mm drives, or 9.5mm drives. So, the new drive will work.
As you said small things fit into larger spaces.. if there is any extra play, you may be able to find yourself a small square or rectangular piece of aluminum 3mm high to take up the extra space. I doubt it will be necessary, though, as the SATA connector is pretty solid.
