so i recently purchased a new laptop for college, and it has a bunch of programs that im not sure if i need or not. so i took a ss of my processes which show a lot of memory usage, which processes do i need? these processes take up a lot of cpu and quite a bit of physical memory. i have 3gb of ram, but it runs like 512mb. :/

In the past, when I've been curious about some of the processes running on my computer, I've just googled the program name and it's normally returned results linking it to it's proper software...

..or you could just start deleting things until your box stops lagging (or working, whichever comes first) ^_^

That CPU usage is freaking high.

How much time since you got the computer? 1.2GB used on Vista is normal, but if it's new it's not...

if you want to clean the system, do a clean install from a Vista install disc. Stop the crapware before it starts!

Most common useless processes on a Toshiba notebook - Pinger - Smooth View - Config Free and Flash cards. Install a free 30 day trial of Tune Up Utilities (if your not comfortable using MSCONFIG) and use the start up manager to prevent them from running at start up. There will be several other items you can stop also - if your not sure click on the item and it will give you guidance.

On my XP machine I routinely go into MSCONFIG and eliminate most non-Microsoft startup programs. They are usually useless :).

This shows you how to get into MSCOFIG in Vista:

Before you eliminate any processes, google them and see what they belong to. Most the Toshiba utilities are useless in my experience :).

But before you change any startup programs write down which ones are currently there. That way if you accidentally remove anything important, you can always turn them back on.

get a copy of "autoruns.exe" from sysinternals from Microsoft. You can disable starting of nearly everything, and can "undo" what you did with a simple click if needed.
