Are you trying to say that the laptop lcd is blank, but if you connect it to an external monitor you get an image? If this is the case you could have a disconnected cable inside the laptop or a bad inverter.

There are Fn keys to turn the backlight up and down, but as far as I know it will not turn the laptop backlight off (it doesn't on my portege). I doubt that its a screen saver issue because you said that the screen doesn't come on when you boot up (screen saver needs an operating system to work). When you power on the laptop can you see ANY image (even if it's very faint)?

Taking the battery out shouldn't cause this problem.

It has happened to me either. My issue solved by reinstalling the graphics driver.

And in my computer (althought it is a Samsung) THERE IS a Fn combination wich turns backlight ON/OFF (Fn+F5). It is represented in the keyboard with a symbol similar to a sun, one half white and the other half black.

    Hope it helps!
