i have a windows xp home recovery disc for my toshiba satellite L20-101. my query is --would i be able to use that disc to install the same OS in another laptop? i am still using my toshiba L20? or would that be equivalent to "making" an illegal installation?

Illegal installation, unless you use another key (not from the original laptop).

if it is a Recovery disc, it won't work anyway. It will install the wrong drivers. If it is an actual OEM Microsoft XP disc, you can use it, but as stated you will need a valid key for the new machine in order to activate and actually legally use it.

If it is a Toshiba L20/25 Recovery disk, it will work on any L20 or L25 Toshiba laptop. Being a XP disk, I think it won't even start to install any other Toshibas. The Toshiba Vista recovery disks will install on any Toshiba with the right drivers, but you will only get 3 days to use it without a working COA number to activate it.
