Lately, about 2 weeks ago, when I started playing NFS: Undercover and Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, my CPU and GPU temps started skyrocketing, after only just 30 minutes of playing. When I would be done, the CPU would hit 170F and the GPU around 185-200F. And I would have the laptop on a cool flat surface...a polished granite table.

I have not overclocked my graphics card since, and I am wondering if there are any recommendations for keeping my laptop cool.

    I replied to your PM.

My gpu temperature will increase higher when i raise the back up to get air underneath, its madness i know but its true. Also my CPU temp for a p8600 2.4ghz will never go above 45C - 48C when running orthos.

You might have dust on the grills that requires a simple blast of compressed air to clear.

    Something for you to try:

Enable v-sync in your games, I have noticed that this will reduce the temperature of the GPU considerably.

one or two degree's drop with v-sync on ive noticed while gaming since owning it for only 4 days  (which is strange cause I thought it makes the cpu work harder, not sure)

    still tweaking it up though,

It usually depends on the game for me, i play oblivion a lot and when i enable v-sync i have a difference of 5-10 degrees in temperature compared to disabling it. The CPU and GPU are on seperate heatsinks so the heat of the CPU wont affect the GPU temperatures

I havent had my x305 long enough to know, just been reading in the forums here ;)

I would think the GPU kicks in at a certain temp, same as CPU
Just for fun I added a old Xbox 360 fan stand thingy

    http://goshopping.thestar.com/ss/media/12070000/12070449.jpg (this one)

took it apart kinda, taped it to the back, plugged it in and now sucks more air out, looks stupid though but temp already dropped to

    39 degree's from 43 in 10 minutes.any cooling/air flow helps

    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
(someone please comfirm if this works right for x305)

I tried this, It doesnt make a slight bit of difference to my fan speeds, I got told by another member on a different thread that they are controlled by the BIOS and cannot be changed.

i guess it BIO's controlled , i guess running the fans 100% wouldnt be a good idea ,would wear out alot quicker, guess that solves that

seems my fan kicked in loud right at 85 degree's on mine, then temp kinda dropped to 82 after a minute.

It's interesting with my case because idle temps are around 120-135 for CPU and 135-150 for GPU.

But I will try getting the NZXT Cryo LX cooler and see how much a difference it makes. Depending on that, I may or may not disassemble it and apply AS5 to the chips and heatsinks.

I have the best cooling device,
grabbing my kitchen chair and sitting outside my back door at -17 degree's out lowers my temps instantly as i hold my laptop ,lol

now to be serious , anything to keep good airflow i believe is enough ,from the bottom and out the back of the x305

Id take mine apart and add AS5 as well if I didnt have a warrenty ,but since I do, i wont , I believe the max temp for GPU is 105, mine crashed at temp (but I purposely blocked the vents just to find out) :D

Is your GPU overclocked when you ran Furmark? Im guessing it is because thats a good max fps. What clocks were they?

oh the GPU core was 600 and memory was default, 799? and shaders I put to 1500

    http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=592&card2=590
equal to 9800m gts? probably not but close

Yes the memory default is 799, i have the same GPU in my laptop but i need to overclock it before i get that high a max fps in Furmark. It maybe because im running it in a window at 640x480? not sure

Dude55 I just ran this for 5 minutes and this is my result, it is still running now 15 minutes later and the temp is the same, Its overclocked at 700 - 1700 - 930.
This is what AS5 will bring it down to, I used to get 105C at these clocks before applying it. when i have stock clocks it decreases to 78C

    giggles, was funny,
im going to build a laptop stand for mine and run cold air right from my window to the bottom of mine ,a long hose from my window , oh nevermind, i wont even say it lol

seriously though , i have a 4 inch round hose hooked up to my projector and my xbox 360 ,directing the heat outside ,otherwise my bedroom would be too hot

i could do the same with this laptop but I wont bother

all i know is the x305 loves cold air *l*

all the temps will be different depending on the air going into the bottom

gpu wont go over 96 degree's on mine cause of the extra fans i have

Yes, like i told you in the PM i used Articlean to clean the core and the sink, then articlean purifier to set it ready to apply the AS5.
The only problem is i still have a lot left and dont plan on building a new desktop or anything soon so it might dry out before i come to use it again.

overall im impressed by the 9700m gts, overclock friendly, stable under 100 degrees, and way better then my old geforce 6600 peice of garbage in my desktop pc *lol* :p

    i beat dude55's overclock Nvidia 9700M GTS OC'd to 702/1002/1802
yay, now i gain .084 frames a second in crysis *l* (hope he knows im joking)

Nvidia 9700M GTS OC'd to 710/108/1805 (finally crashed and personally i think crysis sucks and not even that good or optimized ,same with gta4, both poorly coded, both not very good to me,i hope 2009 PC titles are at least more efficent)

Your GPU temps are getting a little on the high side in that pic. 96C. is that with your cooler on aswell?
Oh and i used to like my desktop 6600gt a few years ago, i thought it was great that i could play farcry original on high settings. lol

it got that high cause my room is hot with electronics on *lol*

besides furmark maxs out your GPU on purpose, games do as well but on a lower level

Still is a nice video card for a laptop , at least to me :p

had some polyurethane flexible hose in my garage, added a fan to one end, bringing cold air in, window slightly open, forcing outside air in, feeding directly to the bottom of my laptop(super cool and a good idea for anyone near a window and dont need to move alot)

    CPU GPU
    before : 42 idle before :46 idle
    after :24 degrees after :27 degree's

temps after playing live for speed (awesome game),3 hours.
    before well over 80 degree's on CPU,GPU

    now
    666core/888mem/1666shader
    GPU: 51 ,CPU 53  crazy,heat problem solved ;)

Ha, there are a lot of interesting ideas for keeping the x305 cool it seems.
I am more into the AS5 and laptop cooler idea though...
And what puzzles me the most is that Toshiba only has one fan underneath, when it should have 2, especially since there is a perfectly good spot for one. And the fan on the GPU is absolutely pathetic. It is about the size of subwoofer or speaker "hole".

I was actually thinking of putting in another fan housing in the empty space where there could of been another one, But i will need to do a few voltage and current tests to make sure i get the right type of fan. its a pity there is not another header on the mainboard for one, Instead i will have to split the wire from the original fan to add the new one in.

There IS 2 fans on the 9800m GTS SLI qosmio x300 models so it makes sense to be 2 holes in this one because they use the same chassis. I guess Toshiba thought 1 fan would be ok for the 9700m GTS version

Well its not, they could easily have added another fan. What would that cost them, $5?
    They are pathetic for that.

very true but they probably thought cooling was [good enough for mainstream users]

i added 2 fans on the bottom right where it appears to be fans between the subwoofer, added another fan for the back, [ PCI Slot Exhaust Fan Blower] , a 12 volt dc home made job for now just to see temps

reversed the air flow so it sucks more hot air from the back,

    laptop with nothing added :
    room temp=23 degrees or so

    CPU=44 GPU=46 HHD=36

    after cooler,fan mod's
    CPU=35 GPU=37 HHD=29

full load never goes past 85 degree's now, where as before id almost reach 95 easily while gaming
not bad for cheap fans added i had laying around anyways collecting dust

I had GPU overheat problems 2 weeks ago, and solved them changing the thermal paste. It had a little proportion and it was dried.

Maybe you can try that option if you know you can change it yourself. Also the thermal grease is not that expensive.

Yep, good news. Newegg just shipped my black NZXT Cryo LX notebook cooler along with AS5 and the Arctic Silver thermal remover and surface purifier. I should get everything by Thursday or Friday.

Check out my x305 official thread for more info if I take this thing apart. I may or may not do a strip down guide. But, if I don't I will try to explain it as much as possible, and include the pros and cons to taking this thing apart yourself. I will also post temperature differences with the Cryo.

id also suggest one of these ,looks a little silly but works ,the flex one's , then put it near the back (of course putting the fan the same way the air blows out) ,aids in heat extraction and drops temps

had it for 30 mins on mine dropped 3-6 degree's on load.and even works better when not playing games.
