Any news on being able to upgrade the video cards on the Q701?

yes, the q701 has an upgradeable video card, but it wouldnt be worth it because of the processor being only 2.0ghz. the processor wont be able to calculate the frames fast enough to make an upgrade worth it. for example, if a cpu can get 50 frames calculated, and the gpu can process up to 75 frames, then get a cpu that can calculate 75 frames. so, upgrade your CPU to at least 2.3, 2.4 ghz, then get an 9800gtx. otherwise, buying a 9800gts or gt is not worth it. its not that much better for the money.

so the steps to upgrading the q701 would be to change the cpu first, then change the gpu. How hard is it to upgrade? I'm not to technically inclined. And can I just buy a faster cpu and gpu from my local bestbuy?

nope, you cannot buy it at your local best buy. it would be expensive first of all and second of all they do not sell mobile cpus. this cpu would be good:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111007

it is the same pxxx cpu that you have, the p7350, just at a higher frequency and with double the L2 cache. Otherwise ask e-wrecked about how he got his x9100 for his gateway. You can put an x9100 in your toshiba. It wouldnt be too hard, but when you are going to do it, talk to me first so i can fully explain all of the basics so when you're done, your computer will actually turn on. finding a gpu will be hard, but go for a 9800m gtx. then, sell your components on ebay when you upgrade.

Hmmm.......So I'll have to join some secret society, become part of the underground and go through black markets to upgrade my x305...SURE! HOW LOVELY!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

One of the reasons that persuaded me to get Toshiba instead of Gateway was the upgradeable path that seemed at the time "user friendly".

Dude, from here on out. I will need you bro. E- wrecked has abandoned us also with the other deserter cq842000, the diabetes guy, who had the blueprints for this technology, don't no if they silenced him.

We must band together and start our x305 movement for world domination.

It's seriously gonna take effort to upgrade this thing? Going through channels to find parts and then changing and messing with settings and all, makes me depressed but if I have to then at least you got my back and can run me through this with your expertise.

Are you gonna upgrade yours? If yes I'll follow your lead and post your detailed results on how you go about doing it so I can follow step by step. Alright my x305 brother.

Jacob, the upgradeability of the GPU depends on TOSHIBA... THe connector of the GPU is not a standard PCI-Ex connector, but a Toshiba special connector... Every company does the same... The posibility to upgrade a GPU in a laptop is 1 in a million...

However, since TOshiba released a x305 with a 9800 in Europe, the chances they allow the upgrade are so-so... Probably for a big ammount of money though...

i dont think i will upgrade mine for the sake of money. i barely was able to buy this x305, barely. almost bankrupt, lol. and upgrading, ill be like sure, what the hell, but i would be able to guide you through it without doing so. I have upgrade many laptops before. read my thread about overclocking a 1.86ghz celeron 430 to 2.3ghz stable on an acer aspire 3680. But, i will be able to keep you updated. i mean, my 8400 + 3dmark 06 score didnt come from nothing. if you want to get up there, past your 7300 or so, then follow my lead and i will tell you how i did it. also, with upgrading, just tell me how much you want to spend on a cpu then a gpu. I mean, a 2ghz p7350 wont suffice with a 9800m gtx on its side. upgrading your cpu wont be too hard. i can tell you the steps, since most laptops are the same and i know the location of the components.

here is what you can upgrade for sure:

    1. memory!!! 6gb support is here, but according to toshiba's UK website about the x300-11w it can support up to 8gb!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe, if you wait for the quad mobiles to come out with the 1333mhz FSB, you can get 8gb of 1333, but that would be expensive. Anyway, youd have to do the same with the 8gb, cause there are only 2 slots.

    2. cpu- when upgrading this, id stick with a p8600 or p9500, or even an x9100. if not, wait for the quad mobiles., id also apply arctic silver 5 for better heat dissipation unless toshiba already did a good enough job.

    3. gpu - this toshiba has an mxm slot and can be upgraded. i would go no less than a 9800gtx. this would be a little bit more difficult, but it can be done with just unscrewing the screws that put it on the board and disconnecting some wires.

    4. hard drive: you can pop in the biggest fastest 2.5" you can find, but its not all so worth it for me.

    thats about it.

id first go with the cpu upgrade, then get the 9800m gtx or wait to see the next notebook cards. maybe they can fit in the toshiba too. :D

Jose! my x205 brother! That sucks! Hopefully if alot of x305 q701s get sold and owners start demanding being able to upgrade their vid cards. Then Toshiba probably sell the 9 series card on their US site. But it's possible to take the 9800m gtx from the q702 and install it on the q701 and vice versa right? So how can we persuade Toshiba to give this to us as an option? Hopefully some higher up in Toshiba comes to this forums and reads about the HUGE demand for this gpu uprade. Come on x305 q701 owners let's make our voices heard!

Well in the x205 you could swapt the 8600's for the 8700 and viceversa, so i don't see why the x305 would be different... The real problem is if TOSHIBA gonna sell the cards for upgrade...

The x205 sold really good and still they didn't release any upgrade option... So who knows what they'll do with the x305...

I just ordered a P8600 on amazon, $165 free shipping, a great deal. I also just ordered A WD Scorpio black 320, 81 on price watch. for a second,

GPU wise I decided to wait for ebay, if I can get a SLI or a 9800 from a 907 or 908 I'll give it a shot,

I just got the top last week, for 825 from bestbuy so a few upgrades are in order.

So is it actually possible to upgrade the GPU with an aftermarket one purchased from someone other then Toshiba?

Please post how you make out with your upgrades (especially with the GPU) as I woulld really like to know I can keep this laptop for more then 2 years by upgrading it

it looks like the Qosmio X300-11W has a single 9800M GTX supporting TurboCache™ technology witch looks to be a swap in, just have to find one!

(there is also the Qosmio X300/W00 (9800m gtx this one has a gig video memory!!!)

I haven't seen any X300 models with a 9800M GTX. Toshiba has had typos stating some models have a 9800M GTX when they really have a 9800M GTS.
