For radio programming in DOS. Our Volunteer Fire Brigade radio tech asked me to look around for a slow ruggedized Toughbook. Just passing on the request.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Gork!

Yes, old DOS based Motorola RSS does not like to run correctly on a computer with a fast processor. The fastest I would use would be a 486 DX120 or a Pentium 90.

You can get by with a P133MMX by disabling the cache, but faster then that, with DOS based RSS and you are begging for problems in the form of codeplug corruption. The serial link in the radio can not keep up with it.

I have had a lot of guys brag to me that they used faster machines, and then in the next breath moan about the radios they have fried, they never see the connection.

So I am afraid that this is not a job for a Toughbook. The slowest thing I know of is the 166MMX CF-25 and personally I would not chance that.

Thanks, I think he kinda knew that but I sure didn't. Maybe we could gut a Commodore 64 and stick it in a Toughbook case.
The only feed I know about comes in sacks.

I appreciate it but will have to get back to you when the techie gets back from Alabama.

Meanwhile this thread could be closed.

    Thanks, Jeff

EDIT: O.K. ecv13 I'm curious now. Did a little research and found not much yet. What vintage are we talking on the 200? It looks like I need more numbers. Like A740? And do you have any pictures? No hurry.

    Thanks again.

Hey Gork, check out the threads on the CF-25. He is willing to sell and it is either a 150Mhz or a 166.

I will check. Meanwhile how do I close a thread?
I have a CF-25 coming but haven't let that stop me before.

    Thank you.

I'm, I believe, who Silver Trooper referred to.

I have two CF-25s, both with 166MHz Pentium MMX processors. I'd be willing to part with one for a price (I happen to like them, so the price you'd pay would be the "convince me to sell it" price, not what I think they're worth or what they actually are worth). It's difficult to ask a lot of money from a cause I respect (volunteer fire brigade) though...

Alternatively, I have a motherboard and partial bottom case from another CF-25 with a 133MHz Pentium CPU. I will be removing the power adapter socket from it but it CAN be used with external monitor and keyboard just fine (I did it myself to verify the mobo works). Not very portable however.

No battery would be included in any event - don't have any. No AC adapter to be included either, currently doing something "interesting" to provide power to what I've got.

I appreciate it. But don't let sympathy hold you back. We could always raffle another quilt. :D Let me check when techie gets back. My 25 is coming in and I will hand it to him as a gift and let him decide.
Short break for a phone call there.

    Again I appreciate it.

Alright lol, post here if you determine it'd be needed. I'll watch this thread.

It's not going anywhere in the meantime.

I think we might be looking at the 133 mother-board.

I can't say when we will contact you as Peter is out of state for????????

    Thanks again.

    Jeff

So maybe you'd trade the repairable 133 MBO for a power supply?

So long as your staff (or you?) are skilled with a soldering iron it'll be fine, since I'll be removing the power adapter jack to put in one of the others.

If for whatever reason I stop coming here (really seems unlikely) I can be contacted by email from whatever address is present on the contact page at my website (if I change email before you contact me, this way whatever you view will be current). My site URL is included in my profile on this forum.

Keep in mind I believe the 133 mobo/CPU need a slightly different lower half from other CF-25s, I'm not sure of the details because I haven't compared side by side, but I think the heatspreader design is slightly different.

My staff is essentially me. Plus some very unofficial volunteers. (Good troops to the max) Would a propane torch do?lol

    Thanks again.

Eh, probably not the best idea (I assume you mean the large type for plumbing, not pocket-sized). Precision is important when working with circuit boards because you could desolder other nearby parts in the process with a torch.

I could, of course, provide some length of wire soldered to that spot on the PCB so you could do as you needed to with it, attach with wire nuts or solder to wires from an appropriate AC adapter...(essentially what I'm doing now with one unit, which is why I'm taking the jack)

They didn't have a little smiley with tongue in cheek.

I have an old 25er just down the road that can do it if I can't. He may have a few more parts laying around too. He didn't have a power supply so I bought one on ebray.

That other 25 should be here any day.

Gah, text can never carry that type of thing properly. iFailed, I suppose.

Hopefully whatever you end up with will do the job for you. Do let us know that/if you're set once you know.

They are A740s. I'll get some pics for you later today.
