    Toughbook,

How does one tell the difference with the discs? Are they marked on which model they are to be used?

I bought a set of Recovery Disks... thanks!

Yes... The Recovery Disks are a silver/chrome finish and have the MK# clearly marked along with the SP#... Like MK4-SP2XX123.... Or something similar..

The disks have two ways for you to tell if they are correct for your model
    First and most accurate way
The coa on the bottom of your Toughbook has the part number of the recovery disks listed on the tag
Its directly below the word Panasonic and starts with DFQxxxxxx
That is the part # of your disks, and is shown on the recovery disks as well

The second way to give you a hint to the correct disks is on the disk themselves they show the series and version of restore on them
An example is cf-30 Series – that’s the dvd for the cf-30
    MK2-XP2M
So it tells me that its for the mk-2 model, restoring XP , SP-2 version

    Hello all,
I know that it has been a little while since this was at the top of the forum, but I hold out hope that someone can help. I am the proud new owner of 10 CF-29 MK5s (CF-29NTQGZBM) and 3 CF-29 MK4s (CF-29NTQGCBM). None of these units came with the panny disks, so if someone has these avilable, please PM me.

I am also the proud new owner of a CF-18 MK1 (CF-18BHAZXKM) as well as 3 CF-18 MK4 (CF-18KHHZCBM) and need the disks for these as well.

Finally, I have also aquired a CF-28 (CF-28PBJAZQM) that also did not come with the disks. If anyone has a set lying around for this as well, I would appriciate it. The person who loaded this one stripped down XP and without the XP disk that they used it keeps telling me there is an error when I go to load the rest of XP (It tells me that I am using the wrong disk - all I have is XP SP2 disks)

Just to verify, disks from different makes within the same model lines will not works with other units correct?? I assume that this is the case as componets and drivers change between makes. The reason I ask is that I have a MK1 and MK2 CF-29 set as well as a CF-18 MK2 set. I can't imagine they would work, but wanted to verify.

BTW... When you guys get to reading this, what coax cable size do you use for the GPS installs?? I assume it is RG-188(a). Also from what I have read, you use the MMCX connectors for the GPS, but do you solder the connectors or crimp them. Finally, where do you purchase the cable and connectors?? I am going to be in the market for some cable as well as some of these connectors in the next few days. As I doubt that I will need a full spool of this, but wanted to know if anyone else needed to buy any of these items as we could pool resources and save some money. Same goes for the GPS boards and BT Modules.

PM me, or if no PM email me at NKrebs (at) StrathamFire (period) org ;) - couldn't resist shaking it up a bit!!

I bought a spool of shielded RG-174 for all my GPS installs as well as a bunch of rt. angle MMCX connectors... It's kind of large but it has always worked very well for me..

By the way... We need to discuss again the inportance of HOW we ask for Recovery Disks around here again. You may not inference at all that you are looking for copies. You may offer to buy a legit set here or you can sometimes find them on ebay... I just want to nip this in the bud again.

Beau.... whatcha doing with that many Toughbooks? Outfitting the FD?

TB, My apologies for not specifying that I was looking to purchase legit copies of the recovery disks. I assumed (my fault), that when I asked for them here, it was a given that they be legit copies.

As for the Toughbooks, several are being built for the FD/Emergency Management (as long as the town approves the purchase), as well as several of the individual FD members and HAM radio members showing significant interest in modified (GPS, BT) Toughbooks. The HAM radio group is also interested in my attempts at installing a TNC into the Toughbook for Radio interface. Especially for radios that don't already have a TNC built in to them like the new Yaesu VX-8R or the Kenwood TH-D7A(g). I am looking at using both the serial port as well as the internal USB. Additionally, I have a plan for a small internal USB hub that would multiply the internal USB ports to four. (I'll let you know how this goes as it develops as well).

In addition to all of the fun I have with electronics, I have been working on computers for quite a few years. I actually do a lot of computer work locally for a lot of the same people. I have been building custom computers for some of my customers for 12+ years now and have a decent customer base that I have build slowly over the past 15 years. Originally I built only mid to high end desktops, but I tried a few whitebox laptops over the years. I found, with my micro business buying power, it was much more cost effective to use my reseller agreements to purchase used & refrub computers. Here lately most of my customers are preferring laptops and desktop replacement notebooks and while some of them will only see the inside of an office or board room, some of them see much rougher daily lives than some of the FD computers sitting in the trucks!

While I love working on computers, I've had to slow down over the past five years. I sustained a severe back injury and have two blown disks. Over the past couple years as the disks have gotten worse, I have been able to barely keep up and have actually had a couple friends doing service work. Last year (about 18 months ago) I was sick and in the hospital for 9 weeks. Between those nine weeks and the time since, I have actually lost about 230lbs which has helped, but not relieved, my chronic pain. So, when I started telling people about my Toughbooks and what I was adding to them, they ALL wanted one. I actually had a couple people almost beg me to sell them one or two. Anyway, I figured it would be good to have something that I felt was more than just buying and selling, and that I could put a little of myself into. Besides, after they decide what to do as far as surgery for my back, I have to decide whether to go back and finish my Nurse Practitioner, or take up on offer for Medical School. Either way, a little extra profit will help :D

I do want you all to know that I WON'T try to take away any of your livelihood. It's just not who I am.

Beau... It's funny... To hear you toss around some of the names from a long time ago (For me anyway) like Yaesu and Kenwood. Heck... My dad built our first color TV... It was a Heathkit... We were the first ones on our block! He also built his own SB-102.... But ended up mostly on the local 2 meter band. I remember my mom going berserk when he paid $275 for a Heathkit Electronic Calculator back in the 70s. $275 AND he had to built it himself. Now you can go to the dollar store and get one. It's crazy how times change...

Rick.... Ya, a LOT of the guys ar the radio club still have some of the old Heathkit radios. They still have quite a loyal following, even though they tranmitter and receiver arre seperate, they still prefer them. Of course, find parts for them is like trying to do your own root canal... Nearly impossible and it costs you in the long run!! There are actually clubs out there that are purely devoded to antique radios... I remember Heathkit well though, before you think I'm too much of a younin' .. One of my first projects was a Heathkit house intercom system. It used the wiring in the house as transmitter lines. I build 5 of them, one for each of the bedrooms, the Kitchen and the Family room (We had a split level, Raised ranch... I think I still have two of them working around here somewhere!!

The big name in Kit radios these days is Elecraft. They have a phenominal radio kit. They have a list of certified builders that you can actually purchase a complete kit from, but then what's the poinnt?!?!?!?!?! The radios have actually outperformed a number of 'professional' radios that are out there, and they have a list of modifications that make them even better. I currently have a TS-2000X Kenwood that just blows away a few of the others that I have tried. The 'X' gives me Sat communication in the 1.2Ghz band, which is a fun little band to play on. I've had a few Sat contacts with the HAM sats as well as the ISS. There are a bunch of Mods for the 2000 as well, including pushing the 100W output up to 200W with just software. A simple snip of Kenwood's famous 'Green' wire and I have been opened up to all bands. It allows me to use the 2000 for Ham/ARES/MARS as well as for Fire/EMS/EM. I will say that my next radio will be one of the Elecraft K3s, thier latest radio.

Anyway, I could talk about Electronics all day long, it flows in my blood!! I did want to mention that I picked up some RG-316 for the GPS antennas on the Toughbooks. I got it from an eBay vendor. He was asking $1.00/ft, and I offered $0.75/ft for 50 feet and he took it. eBay auction 220468548012. It's $7.50 for shipping, but it's USPS Priority. Now, I am looking at ordering the MMCX connectors for the EM408 cards. I have looked at, and believe I need, the Male MMCX, is that correct??? From what I have seem the majority (99%) of the 90 Degree connectors are Male, so I assume that is because the cards carry the Female connectors. I am also looking at getting the crimping tool to make life a *little* easier. I know that I still have to 'Tin' the center line and solder the center pin on, but are there any other suggestions???

Also would like some suggetions on the Active GPS antennas you use most (CF-29 & CF-18), and the Active antenna that replaces the WWAN antenna on the CF-29. I have been looking at the JDGA website at the Sarantel SL1204 Active GPS Antenna since it has the two covers (one enbedded, one external). In addition in looks a little shorter that some of the others. Opinions?

Not sure if this thread is still active, but I just bought a set of recovery media CDs (3 each) off ebay that have not been opened yet. the part number is PN: MK3-XP2M-TSW. I got these in antisipation of getting a CF-29 thats in good shape with touchscreen and good wireless card, and I want to be able to upgrade the HD at some point. My question is; how do I know what models this set of recovery media will work on. I did a google with the part number and found nothing. Thanks for any help guys..

Don't let the recovery disks dictate what laptop you get... If you find a good 1.6... You can always find disks for that...
