Correct. Panny-Sonic calls it a heatpipe.

    hmmm ...
as far as i know the i3 and i5 have the same footprint ...
all of the motherboards i have used in comps i have built or pre-fabbed comps i have upgraded the cpu in (if the MB was capable of i3 and i5 operation) were "drop in" replacement/swap-out .
sooo ... the generation of i3 and i5 should follow suit .

i googled for board specific pictures ... not much help at all .

The boards do "look" the same from the photos. Not sure about height.

use the calipers and measure the thickness from the bottom of the pc board to the top pf the cpu and video processor .
you may have to measure the MB and processors separately and add the numbers .
angular displacement is a consideration ... the X-Y coordinates of each in reference to a couple of the mounting holes will go/no go the swap .

there is some slop room in the measurements ... what is the interface between the cpu/video processor and the heat pipe ?

Usually Toughbooks use thermal pads and not paste. The pad thickness can be changed easily and I have some here. The pad will give me some wiggle room.
It's been quite a while since I had a motherboard out of a CF19. The heatpipe is on the top (think under keyboard)
The motherboard needs to be completely removed. I can't recall the pad thickness. I have seen some pads 3/16 inch thick.

yeah ... and the thicker the pad , the more resistance to heat flow .

i remember when the first "silpads" came out in OEM equipment ...
pretty thin and tore easily .
they were good for a single use and then had to be swapped out .
    (just like other pads)

Heatsink was the same. I replaced the thermal pads.
