Hi! I am a new member! New to toughbooks, groups, forums etc. I still don't know what a sticky is! But I am learning/reading the FAQs and all - eyes get tired, must be getting old :(
Looking forward to tinkering, fixing and modifying some toughbooks. :D
I have a few 28s a 29, and a 48, I was wondering if someone had a HDD caddy for a 28m (600Mhz) or the later versions. I have not soldered anything in ages - always hated the electronics part of electrical eng. preferred the digital and telecom part in the 80s. But, it should be fun to deal with circuits, ribbons, modules, cards etc. Where can I get one of those desk lights with the huge magnifying glass in the middle?

    Welcome to the forum!

All your needs can be found on ebay. For some reason parts are getting harder and harder to find for Toughbooks. You can also go to www.heartlandsi.com to get their phone number to order some parts...

    EDIT:

You may want to Google a few of the terms you hear mentioned as they can be universal. "Stickies" are usually posts that answer general questions that are "Stuck" at the top of the general forum... So if you have a seemingly simple question... You will most likely find your answer there.... More technical questions are answered in the general forum.

Thanks TB! Really appreciate the time and effort you guys put in helping the public/members with their toughbook issues. :notworthy:
Now, if only I could get my hands on a old HD caddy for a CF-28 :)

I'm sorry... I don't understand.... Are you not looking on ebay or are you hoping for a discounted price throught the forum?

There are A LOT of Toughbook parts that, for some reason, have suddenly become VERY scarce. I need 6 CF-29 hard drive caddies and cannot, for the life of me, fine them anywhere... At any price. (They used to sell 20-30 at a time on ebay 6 months ago) I have just one CF-28 hard drive caddy left in my service inventory and must keep it for service customers... I used to have 10... 6-8 months ago... I gave some away... Others I charged minimally... Then they start gettng scarce so that I cannot even replenish my own reserves.... So I need to hold onto what I have.

Believe me... Just because we know HOW to build them.... Doesn't mean we always have the parts TO build them.

    Good luck and keep looking!

TB, I have been on ebay for years - actually I am kinda addicted to it. There is a guy in H.K. who had some for sale for $69 o.b.o. Offered him $45 or 50 but he did not accept. I have also sent photos to someone in FL to dig some up for me. Plus I contacted a company that manufacturers caddies to see if they could get some too. So, no I am not looking for any discounts from anyone here, heck I don't even know what they go for! Anyway, there is a caddy for a 29 on ebay but it has no ribbon - 320451152740. Take it easy bud!

I believe they are going for $75 - $100 EASY! Heck... I was buying them a year ago for $120 with a 30GB drive preloaded with XP Pro....

They have only been getting rarer as the CF-29s have... To expect the price to come down... Well... I hope you can find a deal.

I'm addicted to ebay too.... Been there 11 years... Much to my wife's dismay at times....

I grabbed two CF-28 caddies for $55 each not long ago and was happy to get them. I have been watching for a spare caddy for my CF-29 and, as Rick said, they were selling dozens at a time not long ago and now...good luck! It is getting to the point where you will buy a complete unit (18,28,29...) if it has a caddy just to have it in hand (and then keep the unit for a parts machine or use it when you find another caddy).

Oh, and Rick, I too have been on Ebay for about 12 years and my wife just cringes every time she sees PayPal on the account statement. I tell her at least it isn't for beer or cigarettes! Plus, it does tend to keep me off the streets. ;) :D

Got one for a total of $53 today, don't know if it is the slightly smaller one or not. Fortunately, I don't have to wife to worry about anymore. She never gave me any trouble regarding those things anyway. :)
