Anyone have, or know of a source - other than ebay - for just the tray to carry a battery in the cd-rom port?

A battery and tray combo is #CF-VZSU1428W but I have a spare battery and don't want to buy another one right now.

I don't know but am presuming that a standard CF-29 battery will fit in these trays.

    Thanks!

The standard Cf-29 battery will NOT fit in the the meda bay. The CF-VZSU1428W is the only thing that fits as a battery.

Oh, OK, so it is a special proprietary battery. That's unfortunate.

I will have to watch the sales then as $90. is out of the question.

    Thanks!

BTW: And thanks for your service! I was never in, I was in law enforcement and other forms of what is now called "homeland security". Our military, the First Amendment, and a strong economy are keys to our existence as a free people and all are under assault from the Left these days. Cannot wait for the positive-change this Fall, and when they take office in Jan 2011.

I wonder if one might find these with bad batteries but the carrier-intact and then find a suitable battery replacement?

Almost all battery packs are just that - a bunch of AA cells inside a wrapper, often with some protective circuitry.

I'd hate to pay $90. for a battery that is already 1/2 through its usable life!

I wonder if any of the laptop battery rebuilders out there sell these refurbished -- or how much they charge to refurb one with new cells?

Actually the CF 29 media pocket battery has a CF 72 battery inside the carrier. But the cost of the CF 72 battery is about the same as a new media pocket battery for the CF 29.

$89. just to repack ... nice profit margin there!

But sure nice to have fresh cells and do-it-yourself is a pain.

    Thanks!

Just remember, the media bay battery has circuit board between the CF-72 battery and the media bay connector. The circuit board keeps track of the charge count and controls the charge light. If you've got a red flashing light and can't reset the circuit board, a new battery will probably not work.

The chip from what I am being told is on the battery not the board. At least that is what they say and pointed me to the help page. I copied this from there.
    10. Can I refill my laptop battery by myself?
This is not possible for the Li-Ion batteries. Li-Ion battery cells are not sold in the open market. Even if you find a store sells Li-ion cells, cell cost alone would be more expensive than our refill/exchange price. We can sell cheap because we buy huge quantity every month directly from manufactures. Ni-Mh or Ni-Cd cells are available at some professional electronic shops. However, even if you have the right cells, you will need to have a special welder to put together the cells. Solders don't work well on the battery tab and excess heat can damage the cells. Opening the case without damaging the circuit inside will also be difficult to do on your own. Most importantly, control circuit inside battery pack needs to be reset in order to function correctly.

Now if you know how to reprogram these batteries them please pass it on to us because we would love know......at least I would . :D

The CF-72 battery is an old design, a dumb battery. It only charges and discharges. At least that is how it works on a CF-72 Mk2. There is no circuit to count charge cycles and there is no way to calibrate the battery. Panasonic added the circuit board into the media bay battery carrier to add that function.

    AFAIK, YMMV :D

    Glen

Whoops, looks like I'm wrong. I'll have to double check my CF-72 Mk2. :(

The CF-72 batteryhas all the smart bells and whistles as any other battery and it can be calibrated just like any other Li-ion battery pack. My cf-72 has the refresh battery program in the BIOS. There is no other additional circuitry in the media bay battery just two bare boards that interface it to the laptop. These boards only have connectors and are totally passive.

Also if you are looking for a cf-72 battery to put in your media bay battery make sure it is the green tab battery CF-VZSU14B I do know that the blue tab batteries do not work in the P4 CF-72's so they probably will not work in the media bay battery for the CF-29.
