    Hi all,

I'm in the UK looking to buy, most likely, a CF-72, probably a PIII 850.
    Looking to spend £100-130ish

I'm not really after a CF-27 though I love the case styling, as they are mostly PII over here.
The CF-28 is too expensive for me
I'm not too keen on the CF-48 styling

Any other model I should be considering?
If anyone has imported from the US, what sort of import tax did you pay please?

Username on Ebay is cootuk, but can't link atm as blocked at work.

If you are looking to spend close to $200 for a 72, you may want to reconsider the 28. Prices have come down recently and you should be able to score an 800Mhz for less than $200. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but half the fun is finding the parts for a song and putting together one with the options you want. Good luck!

Thanks guys..the CF-28 seem to go for around £400+ over here, though you see the odd few at £300.
I'm used to building my own desktops but never done a laptop.

It's going to be shared with my 6yo daughter so doesn't need all the bells and whistles, but does need to be kid-tolerant. atm she shares another standard laptop with my wife, and I've just split up my old PC to fund the Toughbook.

I'm tempted to get a basic 28 (spares/repairs) to play with just as a toy later on, but the one I buy next has to work out-of-the-box or the Mrs will kill me.
Do you think I can get away with doubling my budget to £300 - the more I look at the CF-28 the more I'm tempted as it's going to run for a good few years.

Welcome, coot. Of the 3 mentioned, the 27 will get a little sluggish over time and you'd be wishing for something faster. The 48 is only semi-rugged and yes, styling could be better, so obviously, the best candidate is the 28. It's adequate for most work (except demanding graphics software and heavy gaming) and plenty rugged for the kids. BTW, the 73 is also semi-rugged with decent styling to boot.

My kids have only one word for my 28... it's still working!! (ok... so it's 3 words! :D )

The CF-28 with an 800MHz or 1GHz processor would work well... With or without touchscreen (as you prefer)... Losing the touchscreen will usually drop the price by $100 or so. Plus you can add the goodies to it later. But finding one with a decent wifi card may be a pain... Unless you find one that has been modified. So you'll need to maybe buy a wifi card and read a few threads. (I guess that may violate the "Working right out of the box" thing though....
