Aug30, make sure XHCI is ENABLED in BIOS and make sure you downloaded the USB 3.0 driver from the Sony website.
To get to BIOS just hod F2 while booting, then o to ADVANCED and you will see the XHCI option.
This is the direct link for the USB 3.0 driver:

Thanks Expresso1.
How does everyone feel about the Gesture Control? It doesn't seem to respond to my hand movements at all but the icon keeps popping up saying that it is enabled then disabled and so on. May just uninstall this program too. -
Look under Uninstall Programs for APPLICATION MANAGER FOR VAIO, click on it anf you will find all the Vaio related junk
You will find Sony Gate/Mac Wanna Be
In regards the gesture app, it works, do not disable it. Go to Vaio Control Center, just type it on the search box, then KEYBOARD/MOUSE, then POINTING DEVICE, then ADVANCED and you will get to the Synaptics menu, click on DEVICE SETTINGS, then click on SETTINGS again. This way you will see the options, animated gestures and the customization options.
In regards nntivirus, just do not waste your time/money with ram hungry Norton, Mcafee or Karpersky, just unistall them and download Microsoft Essentials, it is free, light and works like charm.
Good luck -
wow! thanks for your answer!
I'm really excited now!! -
Yes, Thanks for the answer! I have just 1 more question/concern. I really like the AuthenTec TrueSuite app. With just a swipe of the finger, I'm logged right into my system without having to type my login/password. I like the idea that you can also use this to launch/login to websites too. I've entered my login information for several sites like gmail, amazon, and ebay and the app launches the sites when I swipe my fingers but it was never able to log me in automatically. Has anyone gotten this to work for them?
-
Can anybody comment on this? I too would like to be able to add WWAN to my laptop. Upon disassembly it appears there is a sim slot and and space inside for the PCI-E. Just need to know what parts are needed to make this work. Thanks, JOSH
-
Jus make sure you enrolled your fingers properly, then, be careful while swiping the finger, not too slow, not too fast.
Mine works flawlessly. -
Anyone have problems with the mouse not picking up clicks? I'm specifically pushing the hardware button, I can hear it click, but it does not respond reliably
-
yep happens to me. i have to press it harder to get it work. cheap design.
-
Bloody hell. That's not acceptable on a machine that costs that much. Might have to return it :/
-
notebookcheck tested it (German issue). they are saying the processor is under throttling all the time and that the screen is not very bright (less brighter than the previous versions). have you experiencedd the same things as the testers?

Hey guys, I saw a post on a classifieds website offering this laptop for 900$.
The only thing is that the laptop has the 1600x900 screen. I skimmed through the thread but did not find anything on the screen, how does it compare quality wise to the 1080p (knowing that the lower resolution is not a problem for me)?
The specs are:
3rd gen Intel® Core i5-3210M processor (2.50GHz / 3.10GHz with Turbo Boost)
4GB((2GB/DDR3/1600/Custom Module)x2)
256GB (128GB x2) solid state drive with RAID 0
13.1" VAIO Premium Display (1600x900)
If the screen is good, it seems to me that this is a good deal (laptop is still in new box).
Thanks for your help. -
overall i liked the laptap despite the weakness or cheap quality. no other laptop is perfect either. when compared with other current 13inch models like macbook / acer / samsung / asus .... svz is 100% better than them. even though i paid high price.
-
Pretty ridiculous isn't it? I think it is just very particular. To reliably hit left, you need to hit the far left bottom. Same for the right. Part is due to the touchpad's location and size, part due to its being overly particular and fussy, i think.
I really prefer the current ThinkPad trackpoint and mouse buttons - they work exactly as expected and are very accurate. If this machine had those - and lost that weird background noise people are getting - it would be quite perfect. If course an IPS screen and better keyboard (at the expense of a little extra thickness) would be even better. But it's what i got.

I haven't had any problems with the track pad reliability or response anywhere, even right around the edge of the fingerprint scanner. Works every time for me so it doesn't appear to be happening to everyone.
-
trackpad is good. but not the trackpad button, try pressing it lightly.. you will notice.
-
Have not noticed the cpu downclocking...have run the intel burn test for 15min in a room around 22c with no problems. Of course the fan is running hard, but no downclocks.
-
What temperatures did you reach?
-
I meant the trackpad button, it works perfectly. If you are pressing enough to make it click it works. The pressure necessary isn't that much compared to other computers I have used either. It might just be a defective unit, send it back to Sony.
-
i just tested it again to make sure if its not defective.
i noticed that it works very well on hardsurface, but if you use it on bed or pillow, you would notice it ..
-
I highly recommend this accessory.
I always use it when hard surfaces are not an option.
It provides the right tilt for the fans to do their job coolin the system. it is small and light and youcan expand it as need it to fit larger screens. For the record I have never used the usb fan feature since this laptop is the coolest ( in the broadest sense of the word
Amazon.com: Targus AWE23US Stow-N-Go Chill Mat for Laptops up to 15.6 Inches (Black): Electronics -
Unfortunately there is no way I can recommend this cooler. The SVZ is actually engineered very well as far as cooling goes; the fans are good sized and move a large amount of air and when opened, the lid props the laptop up just far enough to give the fans enough clearance to take in air. However, this means that simply propping up the laptop does not affect the temperatures whatsoever. I own this fan, and processor temp tests with it on and off were identical. Only use is if you want the keyboard angled up a bit higher.
-
If you read my post carefully I said that this accessory is excellent when "hard surfaces are not an option" = soft surfaces.
In other words, if you use the laptop on a pillow or a matress, the lid will not prop the base high enough to allow the fans to disipate the heat. -
I'm having really strange problems with keyboard input under Windows 8.
Sometimes is misses key strokes entirely, and sometimes some programmes such as Chrome don't show the key at all, even when pressing it repeatedly, when switiching to another program shows the keys just fine.
This seems to be a Win 8 problem though, my other Win 8 machines have the same problem. -

You are on the wrong thread; you are looking at a VPC-Z2, not an SVZ13. They are very similar except that the SVZ has IB silicon while the Z2 has SB. Also, the Z2 comes standard with a PMD while it's an extra cost option in the SVZ. The 1600 x 900 screen is actually far brighter with far better contrast than the 1080p screen. I think the majority of users find that 1080p on a 13" screen shows text at too small a size to read, thus you are constantly dealing with zooming and scaling. The FHD screen has a wider color gamut, but the 900p screen does 100% of sRGB and I doubt you would ever notice a difference unless doing very precise color graphics work. I personally think the 900p models will become more valuable over time because it is discontinued as of the SVZ model and it is just a more usable resolution at this size and a much more attractive screen due to brightness and contrast values that are far better, the latter among the best in existence at 1146:1. $900 is an absolute steal for that configuration. Grab it. If for any reason you don't like it, you will easily sell it and get your money back and then some. -
Can this sleeve fits vaio svz with extended battery?
Elements Special Edition for MacBook Air 13" -
They listed the processor as an i5-3210M--That's an ivy bridge processor, and the cheapest processor option offered on the SVZ. In other words, that is definitely an SVZ they are looking at, not a VPC-Z2. Also, the 900P model was not discontinued with the SVZ, they just are not available in the US. You can buy 900P SVZ laptops from sony's European site.
-
im sure that this has been talked about, and i did do some searching... get didnt really find what i was looking for with all the topics out there.
i just picked up a svz13. the native resolution is beautiful, the text and icons are too small to read for me. changed the resolution to 1600 x 900, looked fuzzy. down to 1366 x 768, looked worse. went back to 1920 x 1080, back to awesome... but text too small. changed the DPI up to 140%, made it look better... but any text now in graphics look fuzzy....
anyone found the sweet spot that im missing?
is everyone just using it at 125% -
i cant believe that vaio duo 11 has better spec than vaio svz :s
plus it has ips screen :s
prolly there wont be any svz after this year. -
Anyone have relatively new external battery accessory that they would like to sell? Please specify how long you have had it.
-
The SVZ's full mobile i7-3612QM quad core is in most cases more than twice as powerful as the normal ultra-low voltage dual core used in ultrabooks like the duo 11. For youtube or web browsing, the duo could be better for some people.; especially if it is priced right. However, in any processor intensive tasks they could not be compared. The Z series has always stood out as a niche category of laptops that does not compromise power for size, which is what the duo 11 has done.
-
I've ordered a new Z, and will return this current one when the new one gets here. In the mean time, I'm using an external mouse when I can
-
Hey thanks for your help, it is actually the Z3, but it is a Canadian model (SVZ131190S). If the panel is good I'll probably try to grab it!
Will report later

please me select the sleeve size. which one would fit vaio svz with extended sheet battery? -
I had a similar question about cases in general, just ordered my SVZ yesterday and am now on the hunt for a good case/sleeve. I've heard that the carbon fiber lid can scratch easily and was wondering if any owners have had this experience? I'm a student so I'm constantly going to be taking it in and out of my backpack (that's how my old laptop broke the hinges gave out from this abuse) and if a zipper has the chance to scratch the lid up I'll definitely avoid any with them. Thanks.

lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Has anyone caught the weirdly negative review of the SVZ in today's notebookcheck.net. I started this new thread about it and, in accordance with NBR rules, I won't "double post" here, but just link it. Summary: seems like they got a lemon test unit (admit as much) but decided for now to publish what they found and try to get another unit to test to see if this was an outlier. Given what handfuls of SVZ reviews with awesome benchies and screen reviews, and the comments in this thread, I'm pretty sure it was a purely "off" unit. Or have many of you experienced cpus that won't overclock beyond 1.6 Ghz?
-
any easy possible way to test my system to see whether it performs good or bad? any benchmark programs ?
-
I am also a student a was worried about that as well. What I did was bought a waterfield case (not the one you were looking at), a screen protector since the keys dig into the screen when its in a bag sometimes, and a full body covering from clear coat. All have worked great, don't change the appearance of the machine and protect against easy scratches, which I have a few of from before I added the clear coat.
I also got a verticle sleevecase from SFbags so that I can leave it inside of a backpack (made for a 16 inch laptop) and then just slide the laptop in without taking out the sleeve everytime. Adds protection and also gives me a stand alone bag when I need it.
Overall love the computer, definitely something you want to protect.

I really think they got a bad sample. It performs worse (screen and performance wise) than their prior VAIO Z2 reviews....

I just ran the Intel Processor Identification Utility on my Z1311, and noticed that "Reported CPU Speed" is "2.79Ghz", whereas "Expected CPU Speed" is "2.10Ghz".
The documentation for this utility says they may differ by around 1%, but that's clearly a lot bigger than 1%. Anyone ever run this utility on theirs and find what it says? It seems weird for the "Reported" frequency to be that much higher than expected.
- Tim -
By the way, has anyone found that installing all the latest drivers that are detected as needing updates using the Intel Driver Update tool ( Intel® Driver Update Utility ) causes any issues? There are newer drivers detected that are not yet on the Sony site.
- Tim -
The i7-3612QM is rated as a 2.10GHz processor. However, running coretemp and other monitoring applications in the background, my SVZ never seems to runs at it. With Intel Turbo Boost, it dynamically overclocks to suit the workload, usually for me hovering in between 2.6GHz and 3GHz.
I've had problems with Intel's version of the HD4000 graphics drivers; sony's seems to work better. However, I have been running the updated WiFi and WiDi drivers with no problems. -
Thanks I'm definitely going to get the clear coat that looks amazing, and I think this sleeve I found is going to work perfectly, the SFBags one looks great but $50 is a little too much for me. Thanks for the insight though.

Thanks for explaining that - makes sense.
Hmm - what kinds of problems have you had with it? I installed it yesterday, and at least so far have not noticed anything untoward.
- Tim -
Has anybody tried Windows 8 on this laptop? It worked great for me, until I found that Wi-Fi wouldn't work. (The connection menu would always show Wi-Fi as "(Off)" even if Smart Network/Intel Wi-Fi ProSet drivers were installed.
-
everything works.
-
Thanks, would you care to elaborate? Was Wi-Fi working from the get-go?
Or am I unaware of a keyboard shortcut for activating Wi-Fi? -
there is no kb shortcut for svz. but yes out of the box it works - with the default w8 driver. check under device props to ensure the card is enabled there (nfi why it woudn't be).
post some screen shots perhaps. -
Well, I checked in Device Manager to see if card was recognized and driver was installed, and sure enough all seemed well (I could even configure 2.4GHz and 5GHz modes) yet on the "Network" sidebar ( here) it would never list any Wi-Fi networks, only "Wi-Fi (off)".
