    What is the 'screen mount'?

I think he is talking about the metal hinge at the bottom of the lid that connects it to the bottom plate. The screen actually is mounted to the lid and retained (if I remember correctly) by the bezel which snaps securely in place to hold it. I do not remember any screws or retainers holding the screen in place.

The hinges are attached to a screen assembly and the screen mounts onto that assembly. I had a spare Z2 that I purchased for the sole purpose of parts. I used the screen, with hinges installed, from the Z2. The resolution of the screen is not the same as my Z3 so I removed the screen from the assembly and installed my screen onto it. Then I assembled the screen/lid assembly onto the body of my Z3 (with new bottom case as mine was damaged). While not perfect due to a broken hinge screw holder on the replacement bottom case (the Z2 was used of course), my Z3 is back in action now. I found the same model Z3 for sale on a Craigslist ad in Indianapolis and purchased that. Apparently the motherboard on that unit has failed and the owner kept the SSD. That said, I now have more spare parts including a spare 1920X1080 screen. I should be able to keep my Z3 running for another 3-5 years which is outstanding for a business computer.

Could someone perhaps provide instructions as for removing the screen assembly from the SVZ in order to remove the bezel and replace the display itself? I've gotten the bottom case off and all that, removed the last two hinge screws, disconnected the antenna cables but it doesnt seem like the assembly comes off very easily and naturally I'm very afraid of breaking something.

The Bezel has to be completely removed. This is delicate but can be done with patience and some kind of pry tool. The screen is attached by the two screws on the bottom of the screen. Remove those and the screen can be removed from the display mount. The screen sits in the mount fairly snug. Again, gently use the pry tool to lift the screen off the display mount. That's about all there is to removing the screen.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to do this on my VPCZ, and the bezel part was not exactly easy, but I managed.. So I'm hoping it wont be too hard on the SVZ

But the part I'm at right now, where I'm worried I might **** something up, is the removal of the actual screen assembly so I can access to screws to remove the bezel, etc.

Removing the screws from these hinges doesn't seem to be all there is to it?

Remove the two screws (one on each hinge), disconnect with cables/wires that are on the screen and that is it. It really isn't too bad. Make sure you take as many pictures of cable/wire connections so that you can return those when reassembling.

I did that (before posting here) but it just didn't seem like it was it. The screen assembly didn't come off. Do I need to remove the speakers or something?

I might just need to be more forceful. I don't know.

I am in the middle of setting up my SVZ to dual-boot Windows 10 pro x64 and Windows 7 pro x64. So the windows 10 partition is a clean install, not an upgrade. Most everything is working but I can't for the life of me get the brightness hotkeys working Fn-F5/F6. The PMD is working with the latest Windows 8 ATI driver. Brightness control works neither on the Intel HD4000 nor the ATI via PMD. I installed the SFEP 8.0.2.5 and also tried 8.0.2.3. I have the Sony shared library as well. Vaio Control Center 6.4.7.x works and I turned off the automatic brightness setting there. I am able to change brightness via Windows 10. It's just the keys that do not allow me to adjust brightness. The neighboring Volume up/down F-hotkeys work as well as the zoom F-keys. I am at a loss and already wasted too much time. As to the HD4000 should I adopt the default driver that came with W10 or the latest Sony Win8 driver? For the ATI I already installed the Sony latest W8.1 update. Thanks for any pointers to get my brightness Fn-F5/F6 working!

I just received my Vaio Z clam with i5-6267U Iris 550 and FHD screen today and I wanted to share some of the benchmarks. I know this might not be the appropriate thread, but I think this model might be in many ways the only successor to the SVZ, although it doesn't have a quad core, it at least has a 28w dual core, not normally found in the windows laptops, only in the macbooks.
I will be comparing the results with the benchmarks I got from notebookcheck for the xps 13 i7-6560U, because it was the one I was looking at to buy, but didn´t want the QHD display, also it has the Iris 540, which is good to compare. Also the Surface Book, because it is one of the few ultrabooks that have a discrete gpu, in this case, similar to the GT 940M. And finally the MacBook Pro 13”, because it uses similar versions of the 28w cpus and Iris graphics, but of the generation before (Broadwell), so it would be interesting to compare.

    PCMark 8 Home Accelerated v2
    Vaio Z - 3924
    XPS 13 - 2928
    Surface Book - 2947
    MacBook Pro - 3363

The Vaio and MacBook do really well here, not only because of the Iris graphics and higher wattage cpus, but because of the very fast NVME ssds. The Vaio comes with the Samsung SM951.

    3D Mark 11 (1280x720 Performance)
    Vaio Z - 2842
    XPS 13 - 2039
    Surface Book - 2761
    MacBook Pro - 1828

The XPS 13, which has the Iris 540, performs really well but it is limited by the 15w cpu. Surprisingly, the Surface Book with the discrete nvidia GT 940m performs below the Iris 550 in the Vaio. The MacBook’s Iris 6100 low score just shows how much more power intel has managed to include in this skylake generation. However, using other benchmarks which are more in line with performance for gaming, such as unigine heaven or 3dmark firestrike, the nvidia gpu in the SB outperforms the Iris 550, where the cuda acceleration really shows.

The SM951 nvme is by the far, the fastest one of the bunch. I am getting with CrystalDiskMark sequential reads of 2185 MB/s and writes of 1247. The 4K reads are 55.05 MB/s and writes 159.5.

Sorry for the intrusion, but I am excited with my new toy and wanted to share.

Has anyone installed the latest final Leshcat 16.2.1 unifl on their Vaio SVZ with PMD and how did it go? If you reply please indicate Windows version.

After windows 7 and 10 I am now trying Windows 8.1 on my SVZ hoping to get a frustration-free install with all features working.

It works but PMD only outputs to external monitors that are connected to the PMD which one would expect from an "eGPU". For the PMD to actually output to the Vaio display, we would either need to use the 2012 sony-intel driver (which CAN work with newer AMD drivers) or modify a more recent Intel HD4000 driver to do what Sony's old driver did. It hasn't been updated.

I'm looking to buy one with the QM quad core CPU but can't seem to find one let alone one in good condition. If anyone is looking to sell one please let me know asap. I've been looking for one in good condition for years but with no luck. The last one that was on sale on eBay had a cracked housing so had to let it slip. Willing offer top dollars.

I have just listed mine on eBay for sale. It's not the QM model but safe to say that you won't find one in as good condition as mine. If you are interested then I can ship it using eBay's global shipping program to wherever you are in the world.

Thanks but I'm looking for the quad core version. The m version doesn't offer any advantages to the current generation of ultrabooks. That being said the qm isn't perfect either with a lack of dedicated graphics and 8gb ram limit and thick bezel but hey it's still the only quad core i7 laptop under 1.5kg plus I already own a high specs z1 with the i7, 1080p, 256gb quad ssd. I dont' think the gt330m isn't far of from the intel 4000

I can hardly believe my SVZ131190X is over 4 years old now and still has impressive specs even among the newer offerings. The internals in mine seem great, but the keyboard and display both need some attention. I've ordered a replacement screen and think I can manage to replace it.

But replacing the keyboard looks like pretty major surgery since you have to replace the whole palmrest piece? That looks pretty involved.

The keyboard has been through heavy use over the last several years. It's always been shallow like all of the SVZ's, but until pretty recently that was the only problem. Nowadays, it's a lot harder to type on accurately. I get a lot of repeating characters, especially some letters like "c", or characters that don't register the first time I make contact.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to fix it besides completely replacing the whole palmrest part? I do a lot of my work with the machine docked and external keyboard, but I also use it as a regular standalone laptop for a couple of hours a day, so it would be great to get the keyboard behaving better again if possible. But I realize it's old, has seen a lot of use, and this might just be how they get with enough normal wear and tear.

    Thanks!

Does the SVZ support 5 GHZ Wi-Fi? It says I have the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 card installed, which Intel's site says supports 5 GHz, but I'm not picking up the 5 GHZ signal on my new router. Do I need to upgrade the internal card? Does Sony's firmware lock you out from doing that? If not, any recommendations for a new Wi-Fi card?

Yes the 6235 supports 5GHz at N speed. I upgraded my svz13 to a broadcom 4352 and get 5GHz at up to 867Mbit/s 802.11ac gross wlan speed.

I could never detect any 5 GHZ signals on the 6235. I installed the latest drivers, tried different ones, used older versions, etc. Just never would work. My Galaxy S5 can pick up my router's 5GHZ no problem, though.

I installed a new Intel Dual Band-AC 7260 card yesterday but it's also not picking up my router's 5 GHZ signal even though my phone does. Same Mbps as the previous card too. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have version 18.33.5.1 of the driver from October 2016. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Only thing i can think of is: incompatible 5GHz channel used by router. What channel is your router on?

I just spilled some tea on my Z's trackpad. I dried it within a minute, and while I could move the mouse a little bit after the spill, it eventually stopped working.

I took the laptop apart and tried drying it with a blowdryer but it still won't work. Took the black plastic cover off the bottom of the trackpad to do that.

After I did that, the keyboard started acting funny. It kept typing "f" and "k." Then all the letters would stop working after a few minutes of turning on the laptop. But after a couple of restarts and reopening the laptop and screwing it back together twice, they're working again. Odd that restarting would make the keyboard work again.

So now the mouse and click buttons no longer works. Is there a way to test if I fried a particular component, or would I have to replace every mouse part? Anyone know what parts I would need?

Also, what are you guys replacing your Z's with? I got the Razer FHD last month but the colors were TERRIBLE. Incredibly yellow. I really don't want 4K, but it seems like the XPS 15 might be the only decent option.

I still love my svz13 but if 14" is ok to you i can suggest the x1 yoga OLED. It has all the features of the svz13 other than the pmd. Breathtaking screen. Up to 1Tb NVME SSD. Optional wwan too..

You have to change the 2.4GHZ to 5GHZ in smart network,if you already had smart network installed,if not,re-install smart network n change it from there, hope it'll work out for you.

Did you ever get it working? I am in the same situation

    EDIT:
I don' know if this is of interest for anyone, or if it was a problem fo anyone but me but I made my brightness hotkeys and everything work (with the 'classic' OSD), by using these drivers, installed in this order as well:

    1) SFEP:
    http://www.mediafire.com/file/j83lhp8ew6wr7ws/1)Sony_Firmware_Extension_Parser_Device.exe

    2) Shared Library:

    3) Notebook Utilities:
    http://www.mediafire.com/file/xaq3aplp135xl73/3)_Sony_Notebook_Utilities.exe

    4) VAIO Event Service:
    http://www.mediafire.com/file/dzuhiletltillcf/4)VAIO_Event_Service_5.2.0.15020.exe

I'm not too sure about the need for the event service but I installed it anyway. I rebooted after each driver installment. I also unpacked them all with universal extractor and ran .exe as admin.

I'm not sure but even if you could get the mSATA to USB adapter (I think it's mSATA SSDs) wouldn't there be trouble since it's two SSDs in a RAID? :/ I'm guessing only the RAID controller on the SVZ can figure that out..

    How totalled is your Vaio?

On another note; would you be interested in selling it for parts for me? I could use a better battery, a new "down arrow"-key on mine and a new WWAN card.

Well I spilled tea on the mousepad and opened it up to replace it, but when I put it back together and turned it on the screen wouldn't go on. The fan also starts spinning 100 MPH about 30 seconds after I power it up. Connecting an RGB cable doesn't show anything on an external monitor. I don't know what I did, but I know all of the parts except the mousepad are 100% functioning, it's just stuff in-between that must've gotten disconnected. I've opened it up and put it back together over a dozen times before without issue, so I'm not sure what I did this time to break it.

I'd feel really bad selling it since I get so attached to my laptops, haha. XD I just bought it brand new AC adapters, batteries, and extended batteries about a year ago too, some still in the box. I really want to get it up and running again, but I don't know what to fix or what I did to it. It's upsetting me a lot. They just fixed the entire thing under extended warranty less than a year ago too. Ugh!

And once again I have returned to the ranks of Z3 owners! My 11390X only lacks the 512GB SSD to be exactly the same as a 1311CHXXI. Owner even ordered it with the matching Bluray writer dock. Having been using a new technology Razer since my old Z was stolen...I can say based on side by side comparisons in both stand alone mode and using my 980ti card as an egpu that the Z is almost indistinguishable in either day to day or gaming performance. Amazing for a 5 year old machine!

This is likely too time late to be of help. That said...I just resuscitated a Z with EACTLY the same symptoms by removing the motherboard, the memory modules on the mobo, cleaning everything, repasting the cpu (while I was in there) and CAREFULLY reconnecting everything. A Z that was dead (and sold to me for a song) lit up and is now fully functional! The symptoms you describe indicate a failure to post. I diagnosed a mobo change...which I did but the new mobo had a bad connector for the SSD. So back in went the original FAILED TO POST mobo...and whadya kno? It worked! And no I'm afraid I don't know what component it was that was screwed up and causing the failure to POST.

Have you written anywhere how you did about making your eGPU setup on the SVZ? The idea intrigues me, despite having moved on to an HP EliteBook, mainly because I grew really tired of the SVZ keyboard.

I have not done a full guide to this. Others have done so. The following threads are the basis for my mod using a PE4L-PM060A purchased on ebay.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/sony-vpc-z2-svz-convenient-egpu-setup.619904/
    https://www.techinferno.com/index.p...ide-dsdt-override-to-fix-error-12/#post102517

    General considerations:
    A) you have be comfortable removing the internal battery and the case bottom from your Z.
    b) The internal wireless modem has to be removed to free the PCI-E slot it is plugged into. A far more modern usb modem is then plugged into one of the external usb3 slots to provide wireless connectivity.
    c) A hole must be cut into the case bottom (I used a Dremel tool to do this) so that the PM060A cable can be inserted as necessary to connect your (separately purchased) video card to the PCI-E bus. I cover the hole with carefully cut black electrical tape when using the machine in portable mode. See techinferno thread.
d)your video card is unlikely to be recognized until you perform the DSDT override procedure to open the LARGE MEMORY space. You will have to edit the DSDT table per the notebookreview thread. AND you will have to operate Windows 10 in test mode thereafter (no big deal) for the override to be effective.
e)once all that is done you new external video card should be detected and you can install appropriate drivers.
f)The intel 3612QM although only a 3rd gen processor is a 35 watt TDP processor making it stronger than many 7th gen ULV processors...so you have plenty of processor power to support even current gen video cards!
Questions welcome...but read the first post of each thread first.

    Hi guys.

An all around work horse this little laptop. Have been using it daily for almost 6 years, and it's still usually both the lightest and fastest in the room.

Hit a little snag the other day, my S key first got loose, then came off altogether. When I try to attach the loose little white arc under the key and press it back on, it seem to click into place, but it's till extremely loose so I think something isn't quite right.

Have been searching for guides on how it's constructed, but can't find any for this exact model. Other similar keyboards, like Macs, don't look identical under the key.

Anyone have any suggestions? Detailed construction? Is it easy to remove another key and look under the hood?

Pic of wreckage attached. (Are the 2 white parts supposed to be one?)
