The Nvidia 310m graphic card is on the right side of the cpu, trust me. The intel hd graphic card is on the same die as the cpu.
-
Hey Aglamela , does your mini pcie slot work?
-
-
Well... it's official now
Thanks Pepero!
-
Well, when I went back to Mediamarkt the second time they instructed me that it would be better to contact Sony directly because this was way faster than using their services. The third time they did the same.
The right hinge is cracking. They first repaired it but now if I use the screen an average time in a standard position and if I then want to close the notebook, then it gives a 'TAK' sound. And before the notebook is totally closed it gives another 'TAK' sound. It comes from the right hinge, so the problem is still the same. -
No worries
-
If I close my notebook without shutting it down, so it goes in sleep mode, then my notebook goes to the orange light, but then after a while (without doing anything, just lying on the table) it just restart itself and then when I open it, windows has restarted and I got a message that it has recovered itself from an unknown shut down. If I click on problem details I'll get this:

Does anyone know what to do about this? I'm not that into notebooks, so I don't know how to solve it. -
Kenji87:
Mediamarkt forward to Sony anyway. I also had a laptop bought at MM - had to be repaired 3 times - same scenario as yours.
I guess you can't prove what they said to you, but if they don't decide to play "Oh we don't remember, that's not possible" you should then be able to ask for money back/another machine. But legally - they should have had the chance to fix it 3 times before you can ask for that.
About your blue screen - One would have to look into that dump file for more info. Strange behavior indeed... Could be just windows. -
Gladly they are not that hard here at Mediamarkt! But how did you fixed it? Did you fixed it by yourself?
About the screen, I read that S1-pack for W7 will come one 22th of February, so let's hope this will fix the problem. -
No, they managed to fix it, but it took nearly a month. And it was again a hinge problem - crack in the LID. Well it cracked again but after warranty
I don't think you need to wait for anything about the bluescreen - I put my PC to sleep every night! This is not a "default" bug in windows - it is either your windows (for example drivers/registry/etc) that has gone bad OR even a hardware issue. You either need to make a research on that specific bluescreen and study what might have caused it (usually more than one possible reasons) or better clean-install windows and see if it is gone. If it isn't you most likely have a hardware issue (for example bad RAM).
But don't wait for any SP - it will not fix your problem as this is not an OS bug. -
Well, let's wait if Sony can fix it, if not, it will be still in the warranty. It's one year of 2 years, I don't know.
Okay, then I will look for it. -
Well, my Intel Core i5-540M arrived today and it is already working.
Here are some photos of the CPU as well as the integrated GPU (NVIDIA GeFore 310M).
Original CPU and GPU on the right: http://i51.tinypic.com/359zpms.jpg
New CPU: http://i54.tinypic.com/2u6h8j5.jpg
Everything ready to reassemble: http://i53.tinypic.com/kaip08.jpg
EDIT: I will now try to enable NVIDIA Optimus in order to switch between NVIDIA GeForce GPU and the Intel graphic card integrated in the CPU. -
Congrats and thanks for the pics!!
How do you plan doing that? I am really interested in that but all attempts I made to collect more information if this is possible at all ended with the Bios being locked that prevents every attempt. Some even stated that additional hardware (switch) is needed that might not be present in our laptops....
P.s. Here more info - the thread I started some time ago: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/522390-turning-s-into-hybrid-z-owners-please-help-us.html
Here another one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...e-integrated-graphics-core-i3-i5-i7-cpus.html
And another one worth reading: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...4-does-hm55-have-switchable-graaphics-15.html
This is the one thing I really miss in the S - Hybrid graphics! -
I tried to enable nvidia optimus, but it didnt work , i somehow managed to activate the intel hd graphic however i got a code 12 on window 7. Not sure if DIP switch got to do with it , but it might be possible.
EDIT: on second thought , i was tinkering with the dip switches that is located below the keyboard and it somehow controls the lcd panel,it may got to do with the mux chip. -
This is described in the third thread I linked to above! Interesting. Where do you get the error and how do you know you have activated it and it is actually in use? You've got me really interested!
Which switch behind the keyboard? You are quite right that there might be a hardware switch to enable/disable dedicated GPU!
Keep experimenting - that would be a major thing! Give me more details so that I can do some research.
Update: Error 12 should mean "Net enough resources available"...
Found this in one forum, I guess the problem might have to do with BIOS again...:
I wonder if we can flash a BIOS from a model without NVIDIA... would it install and maybe switch to Intel... -
i've been an italian vaio s user for almosst a year now, and the only thing i really missed so far is a sort of switchable graphic in some situation. as i'm an university student you can imagine sometimes i need all the autonomy i can possibly have, so the possibility to disable the nvidia is attracting me too. i read your effort, and i was wondering if the error 12 you get could be the nvidia "locking" the display and not giving the intel chipset the possibility to drive it. i was thinking about a test you can do(i've absolutely no idea if it can work):disabling the nvidia chipset in device manager and see if something happens...
anyway, keep us informed on any news!!!
PS:by the way, i'm interested too in the procedure you followed to enable the intel graphic chip!!let me know! -
Look what I found here!! Try one of those methods! I really hope we can find a solution even if it is for manual switching only!!
-
Hi,
I have the same issue, it happens randomly, I cannot detect what the problem is =/ -
If i disable the nvidia chipset in the device manager, will the display still work?
Edit: i managed to install the driver after i disabled the nvidia chipset. Im not sure its working fully because i cant find the control panel for the intel hd graphic and my display resolution is 1360x768 which is not native.
-
Another success!! Congratulations!
How did you manage to enable IntelHD on first place? Maybe I can try a few things too here, but I need to know how to make it find IntelHD? -
@ rescares,
zip up your minidump file and put it somewhere i can download it, ill tell you which driver is causing this. -
Check your video card information with GPU-Z: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility. Plese tell us how did you managed to make Intel HD graphics card to be detected.
-
glad to see my suggestion was half right...
-
Hi Blinder;
Thank you!, Here are the minidumps, I had two BSOD in a week.
Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: Minidump.zip -
Ok I've had a quick look,
The driver causing the issue primarily, appears to be ewusbnet.sys, searching the web shows a lot of other people have BSOD (Bug Check)problems with it as well.
Have you got a Huawei device at all (Mobile 3G card of some description)? this is what seems to be causing other people problems. Also did you have this device plugged into a USB hub when your machine crashed one time?
The driver crashes because it tries to deallocate memory it doesnt own inside the kernel, so it deallocates someone elses unfortunately, and windows bugchecks (bsod's).
First thing to do is try and upgrade the driver software for that device and see how you get on. If that fails, I would suggest uninstalling that device for a few days if you're able, and see if you get any more blue screens. -
Hi Blinder,
Thank you for your help!, effectively I have a Huawei device since a couple of days.
However this BSOD have been ocurring before to purchase it.
Today I had a new BSOD that is "021311-26722-01.dmp"
This issue happens when the computer is without activity, for example when I go to lunch and the computer is not plugged, when I return, the laptop is turned off. then, when I login, the following appears:

Thank you very much for your help, I will disable the Huawei device and I'll try to reprodce the issue.

Sorry for the late reply , i used the DIY Vidock setup 1.0e8 to activate the intel HD
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...51-diy-vidock-experiences-63.html#post6295529
Thanks fabk for the idea, and bgcngm here the screenshot, i dont think the intel HD is fully activated
-
I assumed you did, so I contacted nando4 for some assistance and advice. Hope he doesn't mind me quoting him here:
-
so far seems only a (great) question of software...this is going very good!
-
Not exactly. BIOS needs to be modified as I was afraid... and this ain't gonna be easy....
At least I am powerless...
-
Hi all,
just received my Sony S and this week I'll get 8GB ram upgrade and a 128GB SSD.
Is there a way to install a 2nd Hard disk in dvd bay with an adapter?
Could someone suggest me a good cooling base for my S with a powered usb hub?
thanks -
Congratulations!!
Second HDD - browse the thread - been discussed.
Cooling base: check http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessories/ -
Caddy arrived:
Imageshack - imag0135n.jpg
I chucked a test drive in just to see the fit:
Imageshack - imag0136z.jpg
I'll have a pop at installing it tonight and let you know how it goes.
I did take the cd bay out last night, but I couldn't figure out the bezel clip system to remove it, if anyone's got any tips on that then i'm all ears. I might just dremel the existing one for now and see how it looks, although I'm not really keen on that as an end solution either, i'd like it to look "right..... -
seems very promising. looking forward to the update, good luck!
this would be a great solution since i never use the optical drive, and a secondary HDD would be great to supplement my 60Gb SSD.
no idea on the bezel, sorry
-
Pull the bezel out from the front corner (the one closer to you), then you need to unhook it from the other corner (closer to the screen)
Just pull it out of the tray.
I still don't see how and where you are going to attach the bezel to the caddy.... does it have its own removable bezel? If not - it looks flat to me... you will need to drill wholes or break the bezel. -
The caddy does have a removable bezel.
I'm going to either modify the caddy to accept the Sony bezel. Or modify the caddy bezel to fit. I refer you to the post I made when we started this conversation
-
thanks... been quite a while ago....
Good luck and don't forget to share the results
-
The DVD bay has slimline sata connector, you need a caddy for it.
-
Done - all working fine, bracket needs adjusting about 1mm to make it absolutely perfect, but for now it's a working solution:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/555564-howto-swap-vpcs-series-dvd-drive-2nd-hard-drive.html
It's got a 200Gb 7200rpm Seagate in it atm for testing.
I'm going to run virtual machines off it until the Intel Gen 3 & new Sandforce controlled SSD's come out, then i'll swap out the primary for the SSD providing it doesn't kick up a fuss in the meantime. -
Thanks for the guide, luckily i got the same hdd adaptor as yours. I will see if i can tried it tomorrow. Also if you getting a ssd, get a sata 2 ssd since this laptop only support up to sata 2.
-
Does anyone know where I can purchase a customized Sony S? Because here in The Netherlands it's not an option. I don't want to get any problems with the warranty. I know it's possible in Germany but I don't want to have a German keyboard.
-
UK?
You can always replace the keyboard by the way. -
hi guys, last day i broke my screen in vaio, can you tell me what new screen i should buy?
my model is vpcs11v9e, pcg-51111m -
Is that the qualcomm gobi chip that's covered on the bottom left do you think? I might try buying a GPS antenna and connecting it up for a laugh...
-
if you mean the 3g connectivity chip, it should be in the upper left corner where you see the sony writing and that strange code:that's an empty mini pcix slot.
-
i've examined some photos of models with integrated gpu and with discrete, and as far as the lcd connection goes, they seem the same. this doesn't mean there shouldn't be any hardware "thing" to use either one or the other...but it's a step forward, isn't it??
-
How did you manage that!?
You know that the Qualcomm Gobi already HAS GPS, don't you?
Until we find a way to crack BIOS.... nothing else matters IMO.
-
Theres no need to shout thanks very much. :|
I've installed the Qualcomm SDK, and tested the card itself, and it does as you say have exactly the same features as the Z series, it is the same chip (Gobi 2000) I've also done that trick installing the different version of smart connect or whatever that sony feature is called, and I can't get it to turn on the GPS. I've reinstalled the gobi drivers with GPS set to 1 (see below):
And it still doesn't "turn on" the GPS.
So I phoned Qualcomm......
They said that for some models the GPS antenna hardware is not included, and is also not connected, and that this may well be the case with this model.
Unless you've already got yours up and running of course Gracy - care to share how you did it with us? -
I think you spend way to much time in chatrooms
I'm certainly not shouting, just bringing something to your attention... and being absolutely friendly... sorry if you misunderstood me...
Yes, mine works perfectly fine. I did it the same way you describe. But I don't see you mentioning the small exe that actually turns the GPS functionality on, after installing the drivers that support it?
You also don't need any other Sony software to enable it.... I'm thinking you are doing something wrong.
I have activated mine very long time ago and tested it a few times and it works really good.
P.s. You could have just asked here before calling manufacturers - not sure the part-time-jobbing student on the hotline can tell you much.....
