While I use tmy new AW190 for alot of things I am very much a begnner when it coms to most of you. I have a limited understanding and could use some advice and maybe pointed in the right direction on how to get the info i need.

I have never burned a Blu-ray disc but want to using my aw190. i got the most advance player that was available 2months ago.

I have tone af AVCHD 1080i vifeo taken on my Sony HDR-SR1 HD camcorder. I am using Vegas Pro 8 to edit and render files. I do not know the best format i should render to before I burn ointo Blu-ray. I also do not know how to burn bluray discs...silly, I know..but in the little bit of searching I've done I cant seemt o find a definitve process.

The most important thing is that i want to preserve the highest quality of AV that is in the original HD files.

Any and all assistance here is appreciated. If you have any suggestions, directions or simply can point me to an article or place where I can learn about this i would greatly appreciate it.

I love this stuff and have lots of high end equipment. I always end up learing how to get the most out of each piece i have but the process can be quite frustrating to say the least!!!

Does Vegas Pro 8 re-encode the footage? If it takes more then a few minutes to save the output on say 30 minutes of edited footage then it should be avoided since re-encoding means less quality.

Have you tried the pre-installed "Click to Disc" and "VAIO Content Exporter"? Both can write to Blu-ray disc, again make sure they do not re-encode the video, I haven't tried them myself.

I like to record HDTV movies edit out the commericals and burn in the HD-DVD format since it's easy for me to put 2 hours on 2 DL DVD and play them on my Toshbia standalone player without any re-encoding.

Maybe the game wasn't completely exited, or the video mode didn't switch back to Aero?

I have my new AW-290 set up pretty much as I want it now.

But I have not been able to figure out the Motion Eye Camera.

How do I get this camera to do anything. There is no Vaio camera utility that I can find, and Control Panel/Scanners and Cameras doesn't see it.

Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

PowerDVD 9 is the new one, right? I'd think it would support everything. I've got 8 and I think it supports everything. Not sure what "Bonus View" is, but I don't actually care about live. Pretty pointless IMO, but I think mine does support it.

Hello to everyone on the aw owners thread. I am now a happy owner of an AW21XY/Q with the T9800 2.93 Ghz, 4GB ddr2, 128 solid state + 500 hard disk piano black... you all know the rest probably!
First impressions, very fast machine and incredible display and goes well on everything from gaming to blu ray playing (very smooth, no hiccups) and video editing. I´m using it mostly for multimedia purposes, gaming etc...
From some of the things I saw on some posts that I can respond to, for example:
-Too much crapware for my taste but I respect this for other users.
    -Bios locked
-Screen bleeding, there is a bit but it is very uniform and not annoying for me
-No USB problems with the power options that sometimes deactivated the USB ports.
-Slight, very slight lifting of the rubber pad palm rest, but I will fix with super glue jeje! Not annoying!
-Touchpad buttons are noisy but so were my acer laptop ones, I´m used to it.

I don´t know what to do with the drivers to update them but it is not a hassle at the moment because all my games are running fine at the moment. Playing actually Crysis and Asssassins Creed. Very smooth on high settings both but have to downgrade a bit in resolution.
If you have any questions that I can help with feel free to ask. I´m here to help on anything I can.
Once again this is a dream machine. Very happy with it. I was going to get originally the asus w90vp, but now I can say that I have nothing to envy!!
    Greetings to all! :) :) :)

I forgot to say this, but the bios lock is for the RAID0 configuration. It appears shadowed, cannot access to undo RAID0. You can probably unlock it with some hack software because I read a post that some people did it.
Correct me if I´m wrong evoss-x but I think the cpu upgrade option is out of reach because of the chipset. The only chipset I have seen so far that permits a cpu upgrade is the intel x38, same one that the asus w90vp has! I´ll look into it though because you´ve left me with the doubt!

The key to the Motion Eye camera turned out to be the ArcSoft software which was included with the laptop. Once I realized that the Arcsoft stuff was to run the camera, it works fine. It will be interesting to see of other software can use the camera, since it doesn't show up in the Control Panel under Scanners & Cameras.

Evoss-x are you sure about this. If anyone has upgraded their CPU please confirm. It would be nice to place a quad core on this in the future and adding the extra 4Gb of memory to make 8Gb.
I can see that everyone is keen on getting a case or bag for this laptop like me also, but be sure that it has some side pockets for the AC adaptor because I can say to everyone that this monster only does for me 45 minutes on battery, and this is just browsing the internet or playing Tinker. Does anyone find the battery life unusual or do these laptops come with a standard battery and not a long life one?

does anyone know how to remove the plastic housing that covers the keyboard? I swear maybe some crumbs or something got underneath it and I hear an irritating crunch/resistance every now and then when hitting a key. I'd very much like to blow out the keyboard with some compressed air, but can't because I don't know how to remove the top.

has anyone done this yet? Is the entry point through the bottom?

    please advise. thanks, gang.

has anyone else gotten this error from Vaio Care after installing IE8?

"Unhandled exception has occured in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

    Exception from HRESULT: 0x800C00E."

details reflect an issue with the web browser. ie:

    "System.Runtime.Interop.Services.COMException (0x800C00E)

    at System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.IWebBrowser2.Navigate2...

    at System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.PerformNavigate2..."

    common trend being "WebBrowser".

I'll keep googling for solutions, but this only began appearing after installing IE8. It may be causing issues with Vaio Care's "One Click Care" feature.

I'll try uninstalling the program and reinstalling if I can't find a solution online.

...and if anyone has a solution already, please share. I doubt I'll be the only person to experience this.

    Hello all,

    New Here!

I signed up basically to ask what you lot are doing for laptop bags? (Ideally UK owners)

I've just got one of the AW11XU/Q's and other than the ridulously expensive Sony bag i can't find one for it. I had a look in the booklet that came with the laptop and it said that sony did a pouch for the 18.4 inchers, but i can see no mention of this in their store?

    Thanks :)

    Ryan

I use the Targus XL shpulder bag and it works great also. I lug it around for business. I love my AW290 and don't mind the travel weight. The bag is light. I might use a roller if I can find a good one. I got mine from Fry's for $59.00

OK! Successfully upgraded cpu and memory on VGN-AW290J.

Here's a short desription of what I did:

    1) I ordered my AW with the default P8600 CPU and 2gb memory
    2) I bought a T9800 cpu on ebay from extremeprocessor for $338.
    3) I bought an additional 2gbOCZ memory from newegg.com
    4) I had some left over OCZ Freeze thermal paste and ArcticClean thermal paste cleaner.
    5) The only tools I needed were a set of jewelers screwdrivers and a credit card.

Then I set to disassemble my brand new AW. Now, I've been doing this for almost 30 years, but I still had a little trepidation. Anyway, I turned the unit upside down on a cotton sheet, with the front towards me,and the express card connector on the right.

I removed the screw from the memory cover (small square piece of plastic), and the screw from the disk drive cover (long rectangualr piece of plastic). To remove the disk drive cover, I had to use a very thin jewelers screwdriver to carefull pry it off - it appears to have some plastic snap connections.

Then I started unscrewing everything I could see - around 22 or 23 screws in all as I recall. Various size screws, so if you've never done this before make a diagram. Make sure your workspace is clean and fairly large. All the screws are visible. There are none hidden under the feet. There are several screws in the disk drive compartment, though.

Then I started to remove the bottom cover. It did not come off really easily. I had to slowly pull it off from the left because the connector by the express card kind of gets in the way. So, pull up on the left side first. If you've forgotten any screws, you'll find out now. While I had to kind of work it off, I never had to apply any significant force. Take your time! There is one cable that is connected between the motherboard and the bottom cover. It has a small white connector on the end, so just pull the cable off.

Once the cover is off, you'll clearly see the heatsink covering the CPU. There is also a metal plate covering the GPU and chipset. You need to remove this metal plate and the heatsink. You can't actually completely remove the heatsink, but you can just move it to the side after unscrewing it from the cpu. It looks like the pictures from the AR service manual available online are pretty close.

The cpu is held on by a single screw. just turn it one turn to loosen the cpu. It will be obvious - it should just lift right off. Be sure a note the locations of the little circles and triangle on the corners - the new cpu has the identical markings. Now, there is only one way the cpu fits, but this makes sure you get it right the first time.

The chipset doesn't have thermal grease, but a blue thermal pad - just scrape this off with your finger - mine came off real easy. Then, use the ArcticClean to clean off the surface of the 3 chips, the cpu heatsink, the gpu heatsink, and the chipset heatsink. Apply the OCZ Freeze or whatever thermal past you like. For the cpu and gpu it should be as thin as possible. I spread mine out with a credit card. For the chipset, since it had a thermal pad, I assumed maybe it needed to be a little thicker, so I put it on thicker - it's less sensitive, anyway.

Then I just reversed everything, and, amazingly, didn't have any screws leftover. The only problem area was by the wireless switch - I had to press down a little hard on the keyboard to get it to snap into place.

Oh yeah -- I'm typing this on my new 4gb T9800 AW right now :D

I too have been thinking about the $338 T9800 on ebay (extremeprocessor).
My concern was the stability of a revision QJFL chip - this was basically a "beta" version of the final T9800 chip.

So, lel4866, how is it working out for you? Stable ?

I am getting the same error when using VAIO Care on a Sony FW Series. I had made several changes and although, I suspected it was IE8, was not sure. Having a difficult time getting Sony engaged to look at/correct the problem. I reinstalled VAIO Care; no effect and have been hesitant about uninstalling IE8 and reinstalling IE7. Please let me know if you get a resolution. Auslogic seems to require their specific product for support; and Microsoft has nothing on this problelm.

The only thing I've done so far is run the System Stability Test from PC Wizard 2008 for 30 minutes. Temps got to 59 degrees, and everything was fine. I'll run more stuff overnight tonight.

Pictures of the inside of the AW-290

I ordered my AW-290 with 1 hard disk and installed 2 SSD's instead. Here are some pictures I took while the bottom magnesium cover was off.
