Is there any chance to find somewhere power cord for Sony AW? I just need the cable from Socket to AC adapter to be able to use it in europe. The Socket is different in europe and i need another cable. Is possible to find somewhere?
-
I think I'm not the only one here looking to discover right along with you if you can somehow get your BIOS unlocked, to be able to use up to 8 GB system memory. I've read ComputerUpgradeKings ads on eBay for quite some time & have also been very interested. Well, I'll stay tuned...on the edge of my seat...waiting. -
you can find it in any shop with computer or rtv accessories. just take yours and ask in shop. I paid just 3 euros for mine and it's better than Sony
-
Uh-oh, my bad... forgot to add in my post about USB TV Tuners that there's no special brand/model/type required to work w/VAIO laptops. Laptodd5 said it best, just go buy one of your choice. Like myself, he spoke of what works for him. I'd consider also what features you want like picture-in-picture, etc---& to emphasize, get a decent antenna (they're not all created equal).
IS NTSC (ANALOG) EVEN USABLE ANYMORE (at least in The States)??? -
How'd you "disable" ReadyBoost? All I can think of is the one Win Vista Service called EMD (I think) that says it improves system performance and enables RBoost. I left that enabled & on automatic 'coz it sounds as it it does more than RB alone. Tell me, did AutoPlay open when you inserted a RB-enabled mem card? Nothing ever appeared on my system indicating RB was being detected -- & you & I have the same model & same 4-gigs RAM installed. I also r-clicked my RB-enabled memory drive as you said but saw nothing there either. AutoPlay opened, listing "Boost my PC performance" (or similar words) ONLY on a notebook w/2-GBs RAM installed. How much RAM does your ThinkPad have? When the Sony field tech comes here to repair my 160 on Monday, I'm definitely asking about how to unlock the BIOS, assuming it is possible since I've also seen ads at Ebay that claim it can be done. Another spec misquoted on my system is that it was supposed to have 2 HDDs @ 250 each, but what I really got is 1 500-GB drive instead. So, since I'm not using any RAID config either, do I even need to run the Intel RAID Storage Controller? I'm all for turning off processes not in use---except when I'm not 100% sure it's ok to turn something off. Please advise?
PS: Something unknown to me went awry w/my paragraph break when posting (don't really know html). Help?! -
I assume you mean the latest Intel version 8.9?
-
thank you for replay. actually i wanted to buy online from somewhere. i searched on ebay, but no result.
-
On the drive, right click properties, choose the readyboost tab to make changes or disable.
-
Was running 8.8 until you pointed out a newer version.
I'll retest readyboost again on 8.9 but I'm not getting my hopes up.
-
I thought the one included in the AW model is integrated, like an express card one. I don't want a TV tuner that stick out like USB ones.
-
Replying to my own post testing readyboost again.... Sleep worked the first time, hibernate failed, locked up and never shutdown.
Who uses readyboost and has it working with sleep and hibernate everytime?
I'd like to know the cause even if using readyboost is not a peformance improvement. I just don't like things (features) not working properly for unknown reasons!

About system memory, seems to be that so long as the AW's BIOS is locked by Sony, any 4-gig-max is just not going to detect (or address) anything upwards of 4 gigs ram max --regardless of the source of the additional RAM. I had success in utilizing a readyboost-enabled flashdrive but only on a notebook w/2 GBs RAM installed (of 4 gigs max cap'y) running 32-bit Vista. No problem there & the extra 1 to 1.5 GBs ram proved beneficial. But on this AW160 w/Vista x64, readyboost is not even detected tho each rb-enabled usb memory device was. Other NB forum ppl who have gone this route before have reported that beyond 3-4 gigs, the net benefit of readyboost would actually slow the system down anyway...something similar to workload balancing (forgot specifics). So, for this AW, it's back to unlocking the BIOS--if or how that can be accomplished. No point in giving up on that approach;-) -
I had it working on an 18-mo old HP notebook running 32-bit Vista w/2gigs ram installed (of 4gigs max cap'y)---w/no 'insomnia' troubles whatsoever (sleep, hibernate, shutdown). And no faltering USB devices when waking from hibernate, etc. But then, my AW160 wdn't even detect readyboost in the same RB-enabled drive that worked elsewhere. Not for a lack of persistence either! I just wanted to understand why it wasn't working, wasn't being detected, or that I wasn't even getting an error msg to console me;-) Just wonderin' tho... why use readyboost in your AW when you're running 32-bit Windows & already have 4 gigs ram installed... What would be the benefit? Or are you Not using in in your AW--Or am I missing something (wdn't be my 1st time, for sure;-) -
There. Tried it again.. With the same functioning RB-enabled usb drive connected... I still have no ReadyBoost tab or anything w/that term on it. It's just not detected at all anywhere on this machine. I suppose if I reeeaaally want to push the matter, I could install Ultimate Vista Tweaker or some similar app. But it's finally cutting thru my thick skull that if the BIOS is locked as I've been warned then it just ain't gonna accept anything in excess of 4 gigs, period. Still going to run this by the Sony tech scheduled to do my in-home repairs in the morning. If anything to report on this model then I'll let you know. -
I see what you mean. I too would prefer an INTERNAL ATSC TV TUNER so if you find a model you like, please post? I might even take the plunge to install one myself (would be my 1st time doing that!). A couple of friends of mine have the ExpressCard type & they say the cards get super warm unlike the external USB types. I used to have an HP Dragon which came w/ an internal digital tuner---worked great once I replaced the stock antenna.
Different than what is sold now, Sony used to list a dual TV tuner w/ internal analog (why?!) & a rather large (ATI) external digital component. Glad they discontinued that as preconfigured w/higher-end models (the box retailed on its own for $299, ouch). But still... Wonder why not at least put the Digital/ATSC inside the laptop instead of the analog ---esp considering analog TV is now useless at least in The States to my knowledge. -
Real-Eyes, please tell us ASAP, what the service guy tell you about the ram's lock.

I have a problem that i cannot solve. I've edited several HD videos and have successfully played back the results thru to my home theater via the HDMi output on my VGN-AW190...to digital processor, projector, etc. Now all of a sudden, i can't get the audio to pass thru to the processor...only the video. Very frustrating. There must be a setting that inadvertantly got switched or something. Can someone pls offer a suuggestion on what i can try or where to look to get the audio to again pass thru to my external home theater processor?
Thx in advance! -
What is listed under control panel->sound?
-
- Speakers
- Difital Output Devices
- Nvidia HDMI Out
Theres a green check mark next to speakers and a red arrow pointing down next to Nvidia HDMI OUt. -
Fix number one:
I sometimes get the red arrow or HDMI missing in the Sound option after waking the notebook from sleep. I simply take out the HDMI cable from the AW port/jack and put it back in again without even bothering to change anything and the HDMI comes back green. Nothing else needs to be done.
Fix number two:
In the rare times fix number one does not work, I switch back to notebook display only in the multi-display options, take out the HDMI cable from the AW port/jack, reboot, log-in and put the HDMI cable back in again (sound should be made when doing so) and switch to external display in the multi-display options and HDMI in Sound options should be green again. -
1st, thx for responding laptodd.
I wonder if there's a specific order that things must be done.....connect HDMI to VAIO before or after another step? Also, I've not tried to "select" the HDMI out when I've experienced the problem. I will try that tomorrow.
I've been able to get both video & audio to my theater system via HDMI OUT in past. Last night & a couple times before I can only get video thru to projector Audio plays the Vaio spkrs onky. I'll try a combination of things tomorrow.
thx again. -
For the out and in fix there is no order, just take the HDMI cable out of the AW port/jack and put it back in. The notebook should make a sound when you do both, if no sound is made the HDMI is most likely still red in Sound and fix number two shoud be done.
You mean when the HDMI out is red in the Sound options? For my fixes nothing is done in the Sound options, I just use it to see if it is green again.
Sorry if I was unclear, I was talking about the HDMI cable in my reply to your post not anything in the Sound options. -
Hello all, I have searched through the thread regarding this question, but could not find the one I missed a few months back.
My question is: What screw type do I need to purchase from the accessories store for the secondary hard drive in the AW series?
I remember it was only a few bucks but I didn't get a chance to purchase them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. -
give Sony a call.

Got a good Sony customer service story to pass on (add it to the other positive service outcomes listed in this forum).
Over the past 2-3 mos, I've posted about my new AW that came w/factory defects: A bum keyboard & the center area of my screen was littered w/gray specs, not dead or stuck pixels but something else entirely. Things you don't expect in a brand new high-end computer, for sure.
Various in-store techs (5 total) had advised that my unit would have to be mailed in followed by a minimum 2-wk wait (ouch). Really dreading that. Recently I finally called Sony after-hrs support to obtain the usual RMA# so I could then ship the unit out. I was surprised, relieved, & happy that they were sending a local field tech in 3-5 days (a/s/a parts arrived) to do the repairs at my home instead. I'm only using the standard limited 1-yr warranty that comes w/any new notebook & nowhere did I see onsite service included. My guy (terrific guy) showed up Monday morning on time & painstakingly installed a whole new display. Also installed a new & better quality keyboard. So now, not only are those annoying defects gone but those faulty components were replaced w/better quality parts. For ex, the key tops/caps before were rubbery & porous (were aging quickly) whereas the new KB has solid, durable hard plastic keys that wipe clean easily (a non-porous material) The system just plain Looks Better than before---I didn't expect that either.
Anyone who's ever encountered & had to endure really dreadful tech customer (dis)service can readily appreciate how pleased I am at this point with Sony's service. And the suggestion given here at the forum (thanks DERRIDA!) to call after hrs was the best advice as, fortunately, my call was routed to the Philipines Call Ctr. where the approach to customer care is a world above The Usual Obstacle Course. Since I found out @ onsite service, I'm curious as to why I haven't read others reporting the same. From all I've read here, there aren't many customer service issues listed anyway---but maybe I've overlooked something? -
Oh heck! So sorry to report No News @ unlocking the BIOS. The Sony field tech (from QualXServe) did a great job fixing my system yet, admittedly, certain areas were not within his focus----so, as much as I was hoping to have a step-by-step instruction to report back, I've returned empty-handed.
Aha! But as one to never give up easily (or give up at all), I'm going to continue---& search even more for A Way to fully exploit this computer's capabilities. Anything that looks valid & viable, I'll post here. And I expect, anyone else who finds info on same will also let us in on it.
In the spirit of discovery, I just downloaded & am about to install Ultimate Windows Tweaker (takes the place of TweakUI 2.1 as this new app works w/32 & 64-bit Vista, XP, Win7). Used it a while back on a notebook running 32-bit Vista w/2-gigs RAM installed. One of it's many tweaks is to force Windows to use/address upward of 4 gigs RAM (I think it works via ReadyBoost but don't quote me on that yet coz it's been a while since I used it). I finally got ReadyBoost to show up on this AW (whew! whether or not I even use it, I cdn't figure out why RB wasn't being detected). Given that the BIOS is locked to prevent using over 4 GBs ram, then this may not make any diff anyway---but I just have to find out regardless. Yea, I know...it may even slow my system down---at which case, I surely won't be using it. But at least I will have tried.
And speak of 8 GBs RAM pre-installed... 2 days ago I spotted another very rare NEW GREAT AW190 DEAL AT COSTCO FOR $1499!!! I'm actually considering this one myself---that is, if there's any left by the time I make up my mind (& budget;-) I need a backup notebook. Says it has 8 GBs already installed. The CPU isn't exactly what I was after (2.26 P8400). BD read/write. XBRITE FullHD tho RGB LED display remains to be seen, no pun intended---but you know how tricky it can be getting product facts from Sony. Noticed the list of ports included an eSATA---& what AW comes with THAT??? Must be a typo...but then, so could the 8-GBs ram, huh? At esupport.sony.com I looked up the closest model #'s to this AW190JAB at Costco.com ...there's either the AW190J (or CTO) & JAH which is the matte gray, 4-GBs max ram, no LED, etc. According to the pictures @ Costco.com & the specs listed, this one is far more similar to the AW190 CTO than the 190JAH. Of the AW300s I've looked at, there is nothing I've found that compares w/the specs on this 190 for that price (same $$$ as my AW160). If that 190 has an LED display then the temptation to make a move on it would be....well...hard to talk myself out of;-)
Anybody have any thoughts or info on this unit, pul-leeeeeze speak up soon!; -
Uh-oh, no idea where all these smilies came from---I sure didn't put 'em in myself as I did a quick copy/paste ....hooboy! Well, there's just another thing I know nothing about;-)
**********************
Why not, may as well copy/paste the specs for that new AW190JAB deal at Costco. In my last post below, I goofed @ the BD drive, it's ROM not read/write. Notice the "eSATA" port; 1st time I've ever seen that listed. Did ANYone get an AW w/an eSATA port included? It also includes prepaid upgrade to Windows 7--- (ahem) would help if some SonyStyle store employees from Orange Co., CA were to be reading this, referring to all those who have been adamant that Sony will "never" offer support for Win7 on any models released prior to June 26, 2009 (meaning only the uppermost model #s of the AW300 series). Well then....we'll see about that;-) Oddly, that's the 1st item listed here, hmmnnn....

[Model VGN-AW190JAB] - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz)<o>
-
Ahh, but definitely not the Costco deal from 3 months ago. Here are the current AW's from Costco:
Hot Buy
Sony VGN-AW190JAB
18.4" Notebook
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
P8400 (2.26 GHz) $1499
And a lesser AW model:
Sony VGN-AW19ONIH
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce 9600m GT GPU Graphics $1199 -
16.4"? It looks like you meant to post this in the FW Series thread.

Hi All,
I have recently ordered my AW190 and waiting it to be shipped. I wonder if anyone was able to install Leopard on this machine? Any success turning it into a hackintosh? Thanks! -
Laptop...figured out the HDMI audio issue. Thx! It seems I must be sure the cable is plugged in before I switch my input that activiates the cable on the reciever end. Otherwise, my guess is, it doesn't trigger the Vaio to tell it it is coinnected to an exterior audio system. Inserting the HDMI into the Vaio after the Receiver input became active does'nt alert the Vaio. At least, thats how it appears.

Hi guys,
did anybody try installing Windows 7 RTM on the AW? I did but I cant seem to make the card reader work no matter how much I try. I think the drivers seems to have been installed but I dont get any icons in my explorer showing that the reader is available.
Any tips?
Thanks
K -
I`m getting my AW290 tomorrow and I`ll put on Windows 7 Ultimate RMT immediately, but I was just wondering have any of you guys tried overclocking the video card and to what success?
I guess getting a 150Mhz extra out of the GPU won`t be a problem, but I`m not too sure about the cooling. -
Hi
normally connect hdmi and then go to speaker icon on taskbar right click playback devices HDMI out right click and test
u will send audio signal and it 'll switch on ..
or u can go straight on some movie or mp3 and it will perform automatically -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5176346
anyone can resolve this issue? -
Yep, only the AW190-JAB caught my eye, not the other lesser one (nothing @ that model interests me). You're right, for the same $1500, it's not the deal we got, for sure. No T9400 CPU, no BD burner, etc. Hoping there's a way to find out real soon (for Fact this time;-) what type of display that one has. Costco specs list XBRITE-FullHD but no LED (darnit!). However, when spec snooping at Sony Support online, the one AW190J-CTO that comes closest to this model (listed as CTO Config #4 or 7, I forget now). that spec DOES include the AdobeRGB-LED. Guess I could call Sony tho NOT their retails stores which have been the very least reliable for any info.
The better model does come w/8 GBs RAM pre-installed (4gb+4gb). If that's listed in error then that would be an absolute dealbreaker for me. Not so sure the standard FullHD display would be however; I might just like that. The prepaid Windows 7 included w/that model further indicates Win7 support w/be available for models released prior to 7/26/09. -
I get my AW in the morning! Awesomo.
-
Here are a few other descriptions of the model (which was, apparently, a b2b model, which might explain the strangeness of the configuration: http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product/VGN-AW190JAB for the URL only):

Hey guys,... just want to say thanks for your help on these forums. My AW delivered this afternoon. While I can't do a full review on it (because I haven't even loaded a web page up on it yet, seriously. Typing this on an old computer as I wait for a game to finish installing.), I love the build quality of it. It looks and feels a whole better than I thought it would. You really have to see it to appreciate it.
The only Sony product I had ever owned before was the PlayStation's. I looked at the VAIO's in awe, and never thought I'd have the chance to own one. Well, here I am.
Welp, that's it. I'm sure we'll be happy together. I was asking about the sound quality a few days ago. After going into the Dolby control center, I am more than impressed with the audio.
I still have a lot to explore, I watched a little bit of a Blu-ray movie, and that's about it so far. Installing my software and such. But I know I made the right choice here in going with Sony. -
I got a 24 inch monitor and I was planning on going back to my old ASUS W2v for the days that I'm traveling. I lasted a day with the old notebook. The AW display has me spoiled. Looks like I'm going to be lugging the AW around with me once again.
-
Ok, I realize I'm more than a little biased on the subject, yet I think you done real good with that decision! I bet you're enjoying (savoring) every minute of the discovery process with your new baby. Reading your posts made me recall all those positive feelings, too. Don't believe I'll ever get too old or bored to outgrow the excitement of a new computer. So I like that you've written about your new AW---from laboring over the decision of which to get, to waiting for your order, to its arrival. And next, looking forward to hearing what happens with your Windows 7 RTM installation (something I want to do, too)---& how O/C'ing your gpu goes---if 150mhz will make a noticeable diff.
Not a heavy gamer myself & haven't yet had the time & wherewithal (energy plus time simultaneously;-) to install let alone play any games on this AW yet---so I don't yet know how it's going to perform in that regard. But I DO love simulation types like MS's Century of Flight & the Need for Speed series.
Wish I could find a simulated downhill skiing game---& one for surfing (or, correction: more than one;-) Past web searches didn't pull up anything satisfactory. Know of any? -
Laughed out loud when reading that! I've become exactly the same @ this display....Spoiled. I've taken it everywhere with me since I got it & suspect I always will. Even considering getting a 2nd AW as my Plan B system (in case of the unthinkable).
Bon voyage! -
Last yr I was practically obsessed @ this subject---running Leopard on a PC. Then real-life stuff got in the way & I nearly forgot all about it till your post reminded me. While I'm real glad you posed the question, I have no answers. But I'm hoping to learn from you & whoever else CAN provide some guidance.
BTW, may I ask, where'd you purchase your AW190--& which AW190 did you get (full model # with letters at the end)??? I'm considering adding another AW to the family---& a particular 190 is high on my list presently. Thanks. -
Just in case anyone is interested the AW model that I have will play AVCHD files, in full resolution, very smoothly. I highly recommend the Canon HFS100. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-HFS100-...2YZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1250223000&sr=8-1
-
The strangest thing.... (Forgive me if someone else has already noted this.)
I just saw the Sony "Back to School" catalog and, well, um, there's no AW in there. P, W, Z, SR, CS, NW, FW and two all-in-one PCs -- but no AW.
So, Sony figures the AW is not big on campus? Then, just who is Sony's market for the AW in the U.S. if it does NOT include campus buyers? Interesting.... -
Hey guys, I just got my new AW290 from newegg and when I enter the BIOS it seems that the advanced options where you overclock and set FSB, memory timings and so on are hidden. There is simply nothing in the advanced tab in the BIOS. Any ideas?
-
I'm still playing with my audio settings. I didn't notice this yesterday, but sometimes when I have the volume all the way up (bass and everything), there is a small crackling-type noise. It appears as if it's just coming from the speakers. Nothing too big. If I sit 4 ft or so away, it's hard to notice. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
Then again, you shouldn't have everything maxed out. I can turn the volume down a few notches and it doesn't happen. I have the AW close to the wall. But even with the volume a few notches down down, I've managed to get the volume quite loud using other settings.
P.S. - I don't plan on putting Windows 7 on the VAIO until it officially comes out. And I don't see a need to overclock it. I don't know of any games for you, and I'm not a big gamer, but I ran Stranglehold on the AW in 1080p. Smooth as it can be. Granted I won't be able to do that with GTA or something more demanding.
And I'm sure I'm just being paranoid on the sound. Just wondered if it's normal for it to come out of the speaker/subwoofer on max volume like that? Can't wait until I find the perfect video and audio settings. -
The vast majority (like probably 99.9%) of OEM systems don't have settings like that.
-
So.. now that I`ve upgraded my memory to 8Gigs and my CPU multiplier has magically dropped to 6 giving me a CPU speed of 1,6Ghz, how am I supposed to fix it, not being able to enter the BIOS?!?!?!!
Anyone has an idea why that is so? I don't want to sacrifice 1Ghz of CPU speed for 8Gb RAM...
