screen quality is good and sound quality as well; everything is working like it's supposed too. François, you're unlikely to find the BZ in your local Fnac, Media Markt or Saturn Shop, instead contact local PC Stores who may have it on display (like mine did in preparation for a Customer). Graphics are good too, then again I based my purchase on good things I heard about the new Intel Graphics opposed to the previous Gen. It was hard, deciding between a SR (a dell m1330..but due to a flaw in the Nvidia card a obvious no-go) and BZ: the SR is lighter and has a ATI card. The BZ however has the looks and feels of one-solid-machine. little things do it ..nice keyboard, functional buttons and ports are where they're supposed to be. Finally, François make sure you either get the BE1 (not available at sonystyle) or FR version. Vista Business OS will be ENG/FR/NL.

Yep, I agree. BZ owners, if you don't mind the trouble, please post some pics for us. A big thanks to you (anyone) in advance.

It looks like no one has any pictures they want to post...

Anyway, what do you think is the likeliness of Sony adding an option for a Ati Fire GL or a nVidia Quadro FX graphics card in their business line of notebooks?

I would settle for an Ati Fire GL V5700 256MB or an nVidia Quadro FX770 512MB 512MB.... :D

Quite possible they'll do so at some point.
Professonal use -> video editing for example

I also saw some benchmarks for these graphics cards. For example, the Quadro FX770 does a lot better than its GeForce equivalent.

Maybe they'll have a refresh for the BZ series that includes these graphics card. A Hi-color screen would also be nice for those people who do a lot of graphics rendering, photos, video-editing, designing etc.

The thought of having a professional GPU in the BZ...*drool*!

That would make it a very decent notebook indeed.

It would be a great notebook if it had a professional dedicated graphics card. The only question is: WHEN?

    Ideal Configuration:
    Processor- P9500(2.53Ghz), T9400(2.53Ghz), T9600(2.8Ghz.)
    RAM- 4GB DDR3
    Harddrive- 200GB+ (preferably 320GB 7200RPM)
Graphics Card- nVidia Quadro FX770 512MB
    Screen- 15.4 inch, 1400x900 resolution, Hi-color

    Performance+Durability+Reliability

A configuration like this, and you've got a winner! :D

I hope Sony is reading this thread! :)

The BZ needs a 'super' screen like the Z or SZ and HDMI port too.... if the BZ screen is like the Eco screen on the FW then it's not so great.

BZ or T500 - tough call?

The BZ series Eco-screen is still better than the screen on the Lenovo T500. Lenovo's screens have bad quality (washed out, dim, lacks contrast etc.), unless your looking at their most expensive notebooks, like the W700.

    Hello,
I just bought a BZ12XN. Nice laptop, good screen, good keyboard, average battery, good quality.
It was not easy to perform a clean install because you can't download drivers from Sony France. Finally I found a model with a similar equipment, the VGN-BZ560C and a support for it at sony-asia.com
The recovery DVDs are not easy to burn, but the third attempt was successful.
I tried Vista sp1 and XP sp3, and finally stayed with XP.
So, I'm happy with my new laptop ;)

What do you mean with "Recovery CDs not easy to burn"?
Did you use Dual Layer? If so - on my SZ I wrecked two because you have to leave them in the computer for a long time and I though the sooftware crashed...

I used 2 dvd, the first one was OK and after inserting the second, an error was reporting. There was not a question of time, I saw an error message. Same for the second try, fortunately the third attempt succeeded.

    Strange...

I know that my Medion laptop (3 years old) stated in the manual tht you should only use DVDs by known brands...
    (Medion -> Aldi in Germany)

Now I'm wondering - did you have a faulty DVD? I mean...this shouldn't happen... (I had errors when burning CDs before...but... still...)

I don't remember the error message, but it was not a burning error. It was when the Vaio "prepared" what should be burned...

I'm currently working from a BZ notebook now at work (The BZ560P34 - 2.53GHz, 3GB, 250GB, WXGA+ screen) for about a week now, and I'm loving it.

It's slick, fast, having the extra screen resolution helps. The keyboard is a marked improvement over the keyboard of the earlier BX series which I've been using for the last 3 years. This was also the first VAIO notebook that picked up the corporate image of the company I work for without a hitch. Previous VAIO's had issues sometimes with the image which is geared more for the Lenovo standard we have here.

The dock is quick and easy, and a lot less bulky than the older BX dock.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about it.

    Hi there,

I am new to this forum, already loving it! I am also looking for a new laptop, and the BZ series really took my attention! But can somebody really explain, WHY this model series is so unknown?? Hardly any reviews to be found, but it seems it's a really reasonably priced laptop, with good specs and a beautifull design!

    Thanks for your opinions! Roy.

Its a business model, aditionally it only has an integrated grphics card.

being a pure business model its also hard to come by...

Yeah, sony's proper business line (not counting the S or the Z series) is largely unknown and not well advertised. The BZ looks good and is well build. :D

The BZ series is only sold through the B2B or online channel. So no showing up at Best Buy (though you'll find it on Best Buy for Business) or Fry's.

That being said, it's been a marked improvement over it's predecessor, the BX, in so many ways. I'm loving the new BZ quite a bit.

There are some deals to be had on one these days for significantly under $999, if you look around. Plus you can get one of those accessory bundles that someone else mentioned in an earlier thread.

I'm getting the BZ12VN delivered tomorrow and the first thing I want to do is get rid of all the bloatware.

Are there any guides yet on how to do a clean Vista install on a BZ?

    I don't think so.
But you may not need to do a clean instal.

Just tidy up. It should do for your purpose.

Also: Leave your laptop runing overnight once or twice, so Vista can organize itself.

I found the drivers and the utilities for my BZ12 here:
    3w.sony-asia.com/support/download/product/vgn-bz15gn/modelfirst
The BZ15 seems to have the same peripherals.
No problems for a clean intall (I tried Vista before staying with XP).

And the nice part about the BZ series (at least here in the US) is a very minimal software load. Not to say you won't have to get rid of anything, but it's not like the Sony of old at all!

    Thanks for that link, gsuser.

I just started it up and I can see plenty of clutter: McAfee, Skype, Picasa, Microsoft Works (on a business notebook!?), Google Earth, Google Talk, Google Desktop, Roxio, Office 2007 and so on. There's 83 processes in my task manager now. I'd say that's very much like the Sony of old - the situation on my new FZ last year being quite similar.

I could just uninstall the lot, but for the sake of tidiness I prefer to have a go with a clean Vista install if possible.

    Here goes nothing! :)

I found another link for downloading the originally installed drivers for my BZ on the UK VAIO Support site: support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&m=4443 (this link is for the VGN-BZ12VN, but other BZ11.. are available)

I noticed that some of the drivers that were missing on the Asian support site (i.e. HDD Protection driver) are listed here.

There's even a link to a Windows XP downgrade. I don't know exactly what it involves, but perhaps people interested in running XP on their BZ should look into it.
Edit: Just found a Windows XP CD in the box.

Okay.. small update. After a clean Vista install I managed to reduce the number of processes from 83 to 31.

However, I was stuck with two problems:

1.) WLAN is really slow to reconnected after a reboot. Sony Smart Networking seems to cover this but, this applications crashes every time I boot up, so I uninstalled it.

2.) One of the devices fails to find the appropriate driver and remains listed in device manager as unknown device 'on Intel(R) ICH9M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2917'. This appears to be some device on the southbridge.

I'm guessing both problems occur because I have not installed the drivers and software in the correct sequence. If anyone has any suggestions, please post them in this thread.

Thanks gsuser. The list of drivers/software from the UK site for my specific model is somewhat different than this one. However, I suppose using this list as a rough guide for the proper sequence is worth a try.

I am currently in the process of restoring the factory image and cleaning it up best as I can. I'd rather do a clean install, but I don't want to risk spending another few hours and ending up with the same problems.

gsuser, may I ask what model you are using? Have you tried a clean install already?

    Hello Tiz,
After spending many time trying to uninstall all the freewares, trywares, etc...
i realised that the pc was slow to start, slow to launch apps, and that the only way to have new pc was to make a clean install. It was not possible with the rescue partition, so I used an oem dvd of vista pro, and after installing os and drivers the device manager showed no warnings. Everything was functional. As I didn't apreciate vista, I tried the same install with an oem cd of xp pro with the same result exept for the fingerprint software (the sensor driver was fine but the app did't work). It is a bz12 xn (I could not find a vn in France).
Anyway, you should try the clean install, it's worth the time you'll spend. ;)

    I think you seldomly do.
Sometimes there is a bug that is fixed which had been bugging you - sometimes you don't notice a difference at all.

    Hi guys, (specially travelspace)
I think the only one from all of you here using bz series is travelspace, hey man just let me know if I could get keypad specs I mean if its just like fz or fw series or like nr keypad which I really dont like, their spec is 82 keys with 2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch , i think this 2mm stroke keys are too thin to press easily and not comfortable but 3mm could be more pressable, any idea travelspace??????????? and how abt SONY VAIO BZ11MN which is i think only available in uk and I couldnt find it from u.s sites????????

travelspace you said its cooling system is good, and not noisy either , which model have you got and guys you sure that all bz series are with good cooling system and not noisy , thats the most I am concern with, so any suggestions?

I bought this model here in the UK 2 days ago, the BZ11MN, and I am utterly disappointed. The design is nice, thats it!

Else I compared it to my 5 year old HP Pavilion 3000EA laptop which is basically better in every department, except the performance of course.

Sony has a crap display, dark, no contrasts at all at you dont see anything from the angle
keyboard bends terribly when you press a button
Touchpad buttons sound and feel different, it seems the left one is loose and makes a lot of noises.
And the fan is just a joke, its basically on all the time. If it goes of one time it makes a weird noise and when it turns on it accelerates from 0 to 100000 rotations per second! You cant concentrate with this machine

Keep your fingers from this laptop, I will return it and get probably and HP Elitebook if they have sorted the CPU whining in the meantime!

Wow, I'm sad to say that my experience has been the opposite of yours. I've found the BZ's keyboard to be a much stronger and nicer typing experience that the older BX's, and some of the other 15.4" notebooks they've had (FE, N and the like).

The screen isn't the same XBright, but I've found the viewing angles to be excellent, and colors to be excellent.

I've got once with a 35W processor and I rarely hear the fan, and compared to the HP I have at home, this thing is a stealth fighter, to the windtunnel HP.

But then, it's all subjective I suppose. Sad to hear you didn't like it. Hope you enjoy the HP.

I think it's because we are not speaking of the same screens. All are 15.4 but they don't have the same resolution "en" and "mn" are a 1 280 x 800, "xn" and "vn" are 1 440 x 900.
For me the 1 440 x 900 is a very nice display, bright and sharp...
