After reading Melody's post on his new F, I realized that I do not have Blutooth in my device manager. I loaded the driver several times. The driver on the recovery disks and on the sony site are Broadcom Blutooth drivers. Is it possible I have a different device? Melody's device manager shows FOXCOMM, but no Broadcom. Could this be the problem?
Thanks,
Bill
Joe...i ended up not needing the tool you recommended. I was able to extract both Corel and Roxio using VaioCare on the recovery disks.
thanks anyways!
Bill -
when i installed the driver, i followed this order:
-chipset
-sata
-graphic card
-ethernet
-wireless
-bluethoot
-ms
-sd
-sfep
-vaio control center
-vaio settings utility
-vaio event service
-sony shared library
-Vaio color setting
is not the exact same order of the sony website, but is similiar...but i can't see the color settings -
Crunch time for me chaps. I'm either going to order before the 8th March, when the free BluRay writer upgrade expires at SonyStyle UK, or I wait (god knows how long?) for the refresh. Does anyone have absolutely any idea when this refresh might actually happen? And is it going to be worth the wait, considering I could get the free BluRay writer drive right now?
-
Could you explain how you did it for the next guy with a problem like you had?

10- Sony Shared Library
* Required for other Sony applications (Notebook Utilities) to function correctly.
11- Notebook Control Device
* Installs essential system components that enable Sony utilities (Notebook Utilities) to run properly.
12- Sony Notebook Utilities
* Installs the VAIO software component required for Function keys operation.
* Note: Even after installing this file, the Brightness, Monitor Output and Zoom Function keys may not work.
So why not uninstall all the 3 above & do it in the order that Sony_recommends?
You saw the note, right?
Anyway it's better to disable the "Color Mode Setting" in Vaio_Control Center as many recommended here, including I. -
i'll keep u update
thanks -
I had a few windows open when I did the last benchmark. I closed those extra windows and here is my new score:
My revised windows 32-bit score (not 64-bit) was 5744.
Processor integer performance: 5747
Processor floating point performance: 6831
Memory performance: 4526
Memory Bandwidth performance: 4373
Since it is 32-bit, I don't think it is "seeing" 8GB of RAM, which is clearly reflected in the score. -
Search this Tread with: refresh. -

This is day 3 with the F117FX/B. All is going well. I have turned off the auto brightness and am using max. brightness. I have set the keyboard to remain lit in the dark. I may have to cover the sensor. My wirless keyboard and bluetooth mouse are working well. I copied some of my digital photos from the Vaio AR to the F and did a side by side comparison. The F's colors are not quite as vivid as the AR but are acceptable. The AR is full HD 1920 x 1200. The screen is 17+ and has a different aspect ratio than the F. Text size appears the same to me on both computers. Maybe the F's screen is just cleaner but I seem to be able to read from its screen more easily.
I am not a tech guru and need some help with my next task. I want to setup file sharing between the AR and the F. The AR is running Windows Vista Business and the F has Windows 7 Home Premium. I have never had two networked computers before and have never attempted file sharing. Could someone point me to simple instructions? -
As far as reinstalling the Roxio and Corel programs easily...I went to Sony and downloaded all of the driver and application updates. One of these updates was for VaioCare. Once installed, my recovery disks were suddenly indexed on the first page and I simply checked the boxes for these two programs and hit the restoree button. Two minutes later it was finished.
Bluetooth works perfectly now. I am an idiot! Bluetooth was disabled by Sony's SmartWI Connection utility. It now works fine after turning it on!!!
I have a Huey Pro, but can not use it on W7/64. I tried to download a patch from Pantone, but they wanted additional $ to do so, so I scrapped the idea. Instead, I used Avia Guide to Home Theater to adjust the video and display settings at the Nvidia card level. First I set brightness and contrast, hue and saturation and individual R, G and B gammas for the display on the Nvidia control panel. Then I again used the Nvidia control panel to further adjust these same settings in the video adjustments section. This made a HUGE difference with my 1600X900 display.

You are right, the results are skewed when running this benchmark @ 32-bit on a 64-bit machine. Note the much lower result on battery but that depends also on you Power Management settings on battery.
You can see that my result is almost as high as yours which is not normal as I have 2gb less memory & i7-720qm vs your i7-820QM & SSD!

Processor integer performance: 6497
Processor floating point performance: 7688
Memory performance: 5364
Memory Bandwidth performance: 4510
Edit: Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 was running in the background and was not disabled. -
I posted my color profile here.
The Pantone hueyPRO 1.5.1 software that works with Win7 32/64 bit is available here:
http://www.pantone.com/downloads/installers/hueyPRO151_Win_Installer.zip
(Note that this only works with Pantone Huey hardware so for those that haven't purchased the hardware, don't bother trying this software.)
It's just a direct download. You don't need to pay for it.
The problems I had were related to USB. It would start the calibration process and start cycling through the colors slowly as normal. Then at some random time before the measurements were all made it would just quickly skip through all of them.
I tried the process over and over in all different USB ports with no success. Then before throwing the thing on the ground and stomping on it, I thought I'd try it with a USB hub. So I hooked up an old USB hub I had and plugged the Huey into that. Then the calibration process worked like a charm. -
Check for my free monitor profiles (2 .rar files): Vaio_F Free US 1080p Monitor Profiles!
Or clean install again? See this post.
Don't be sorry for the screen grab in Italian, e la piu bella lingua del mundo!
EDIT: I forgot, if you have a EU display, these profiles should not give good results as they are for the US 1080p screen but here are some the EU if it's your case: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5862633#post5862633 -
Have you tried Autoruns, disable some startup cr@p in the Logon tab (refer to guide I linked to) & reboot. You could check your system performance before/after with Task Manager & everything is easy to re-set anytime. -
-
Has anyone tried to remove the battery and run straight from the power brick?
I keep reading articles stating that it is better for your battery life to not be constantly charging it and instead remove it. I know that if you experience any loss of power your computer will die but wasn't sure if the Vaio F supported this or not. My current laptop does not. -
Either way, I disabled Kaspersky (or thought I did
), rebooted the computer and tried again and found that the score was pretty much the same: (6437 overall, with the other numbers being: 6397, 7688, 5300 and 4482).
I then re-ran autorun and found that Kaspersky was still in place. In other words, even when unchecked via Autorun (as administrator), Kaspersky merrily loads back up, when re-started. A couple of other things that I un-checked, remained un-checked.
So my results above were with Kaspersky in place. -
-
Still, you should be able to disable it temporarily for running some safe tasks, like this benchmarks or off-line games for example.
Autoruns is an eye opener, isn't it? Must faster & user friendly than msconfig.
Have you checked system usage before/after w/ Task Manager?

I personally feel that a refresh (whether that is a big enough refresh or not) will happen in the July-August time-frame. And as with all high-tech products, if you CAN wait and push out a purchase decision, then you should do so. The later the better... -
That Marion? here's a Marian (with a A) who is one of the most handsome, loveliest ladies in film, and she can ACT with a style both natural and modern
Marian Marsh
And for the distaff amongst us there's the beautiful Marion Morrison..

I just ordered the F11, EU premium black edition. Cant wait
. I hope it gets here soon.

melody are u happy with the f11, any major complaints. Guys im gona get the f11 but not sure whether to get the 6gb or 8gb version, whats the difference and which is the better out of the two versions
-
-
-
i'm not kidding, i mean, u can see the difference -
Ok, here's the negatives..
It is NOT a good BDrom in my F11, I tried installing Mass Effect 2 from the commercial DVD, it hung repeatedly while the arm was thrashing about, so I restarted the install using a Samsung USB external DVDrom, it went fine. But when ME tried to verify the game with the DVD back in the UJ240 it failed. Also I've had some hangs with other commercial and burned DVDs, with one good CD not being recognized at all. This is all a shame because the UJ240 in my Grey F11 was outstanding. I'll have to see about swapping the drive WITHOUT shipping the whole unit back to Sony.
There's a fair bit of flex in the lid, the grey unit was more solid. I'll have to make sure the lid is securely held against the body when being transported in the case or carry bag. It would be an idea to put a couple of felt bumpers on the armrest to prevent the lid from flexing against the edge of the raised area.
That's it, there is not a single other damned thing wrong with this system. It is utterly silent when doing such as right now, writing this while the F11 is on my lap. When it ramps us there's no whistle, just the rushing of air - it sounds like volume control of a generic white noise. I'm always left with my pants down when booting this sytem, with the SSD the moment the desktop appears it's ready, no loading of other programs yet to take place. The drive is so fast it's scary....This is a wonderful machine, and as the first NEW notebook I've ever bought I think I made the right choice both in model # and its options.

Thanks -
I agree about the charger being a brick. In my case, my other machine (Compaq/HP 8710W) also has a similar brick as the charger and hence I am used to "bricks". -
-
You know, when I had mine trying to install software, it too me 3-4 times to get the drive to recognize a DVD in it (blu-ray), then it finally did. It was acting weird.
-
anyone got an anwser for my previous post. Guys im getting the normal RPM HD not the SSD as its too EXPENSIVE, but will it still be quite, silent and fast
-
-
It took me freaking forever to find the just right facial expression for that sentiment. (Not me, btw.)I hope it was worth it. Anyway, I don't think that flex in the lid is going to be a big issue Melody, though some people made a fuss about the flex in the keyboard by the enter key. Just don't smash it, is all. I think that the last thing you wrote sums it all up, for many people, it's just that way. And also, I have had DVD players in the past that act WAY past weird. One in particular couldn't recognize CD's and took forever to read certain file types, and would freeze up the PC after trying to read the DVD for a while. I don't know what to say, unless you can somehow try to take out the BD drive and let the computer think there is no optical drive, then reinstall it plus drivers if necessary. That's a fairly long shot and it might be best to give Sony a call instead. Let us know what they say if you do!
Sorry if this seems jarbled... -
I just got back from some overclocking tests on the gt 330m.
My results:
775/948/1705 (graphics/memory/processor).
The computer started glitching and aero turned off when I tried 800/948/1760, so I didn't want to push it beyond that.
EDIT: Don't try pushing your card that high though, it's an extreme overclock and it's only stable on the desktop -
I just noticed from the dutch discussion tweakers.net that sony can repair the noises from the fan. The owner got his F repaired thru VAIO support so probably Sony is aware of the problem...
-
-
I wanna buy one, are you in the US? -
Do you mean .....when I tried 800/948/1760?
Do you see anything noticeable with the overclock?
Thks -
-
I expect repairs to be completed next week and will advise the forum of the results. -

I do not understand why Sony can't fix this fan for me. Why the heck did they put in a thermal pad and a new keyboard?!?!?
