Then disconnect all power, remove the memory cover, and unplug the CMOS battery for a minute or so to do a cold reset.

I am still trying to catch up to all the new posts...are people still arguing/fighting/bickering and posting snide remarks???
Something to lighten up the mood: http://i.imgur.com/2pSt7.png

I wasn't trying to snipe in that post, honest. I'll even prove it with this:
I was actually trying to engage in some serious discussion. That's what I get for being a smart a**.
Thanks for the links. Yeah, I wiped the partition with GParted, and wrote an NTFS partition to fill the entire drive. I didn't know that you could create a "homegrown" recovery partition, that's very cool indeed.
And why did I wipe the recovery partition? Because it's now in my media center laptop and I wanted every last megabyte! -
I noticed you didn't hence the peace offering.

Ah, but another page at the UK site makes it clear that the screen is the "pro grade" Premium http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-f-series/tab/models. If you check earlier pages of the ads (that I painstakingly researched and cited earlier in the thread), you will find that the model you cited always had the "pro grade" nomenclature in these side-by-side comparison ads -- but other iterations of the F on that page of advertising had a Premium screen that did not so specify itself as RGB or pro-grade. Got it?
Note that the link I provided indicates that all of those models are temporarily not available, BTW. And here's a link to the forum member's testimony about the settings issues he encountered, etc.: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6164452&postcount=3383
The Vaio AW1 and AW2 18.4" model had the Premium Adobe RGB LED screen available for a while even in the States and then Sony "down-graded" the AW3 to just FullHD (you know, the dual-lamp CCFL) -- and it's now back in AW4 as RGB LED outside of the North American market. So it is not outside of the realm of possibility that Sony has done that on the F models since, in the U.S., Premium now means just dual-lamp CCFL and not RBG LED -- and Vaio Display means single-lamp CCFL (as does "Extra Wide Vaio Display") with Full HD (no hyphen, separate) simply designating 1080p.
In other words, Premium RGB is LED and Premium without RGB can even designate dual-lamp CCFL -- both superb screens when compared to the Vaio Display screen.
Sony's Vaio screen history over the past twelve months just isn't on your side in this argument. -
No... just get used to it I guess or exchange...

Hi,
sorry to hear you too have this dreaded problem. Yes it is the exact same sound that has been torturing several owners, myself, Poohkie as well as sheebp and AndygUK to name a few.
I posted my own iPhone recording of it back here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5949963&postcount=5273
It has been variously described as a a whistle or a whine. A few of us have had the fan replaced, to no avail. Also Sony UK don't seem to doing much in the way of "joined-up thinking" to solve it or even comprehend it, and there is no evidence as far as I can see that as a corporation they are getting on top of it.
I am even more perplexed that you are on your 4th model with the same whistling sound. I did ask before if anyone had replaced their whining f11 with one that didn't whine and noone answered one way or the other. So here seems a good place to ask this again. -
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems as though the Vaio F has been pulled from Sonystyle Canada ??
-
I don't think "Pulled" is the right word. Probably the page is being rewritten with new prices, options, and delivery times.
-
Haha - I wish all ads were like that
Also: KITTEH!!!
-
Also, has anyone here tried the Starcraft 2 Beta? I'm hesitant to drop $60 on the pre-order if I don't know how well it'll run on the F...
-
I'm in the Beta and it runs pretty good actually...Don't know about framerates, but I've been playing at 1920x1080 on ultra settings and I doesn't feel choppy.

Hi guys,
this might be a stupid question, but i dont think my vertical track bar is working. If I slide my finger on the right side of the trackpad, there is no scrolling. Is there a trick to vertical scrolling? I never used vertical scrolling on my previous laptops, so it might be that I just dont know how to use it haha. I would appreciate any help! -
Is that all you have to say about your new F?
-
Guys,
Check this out
http://gizmodo.com/5524473/core-i7-macbook-pro-could-make-water-boil
I think I prefer the fan noise to the amt of heat issues Macbook Pros will be having kind of like the HP Envys! -
I ran battery eater and sure enough 99-100% night before and 86% in the am
-
Umm...I didnt know that I had to give my impressions of my F11 to get answers to my issues...but since it seems like Mr. Joe B., the "superhero" of this thread requires it, I will say that I have no regrets with the F11, it is superfast, I have one of the good screens and none of the problems mentioned in these threads.
Btw, Joe, I have seen u offer some good fixes/suggestions to others before, but it would be much better if u offer advice without the sarcasm or whatever u wanna call it -
I came here to post that lol
Kinda glad I ditched Apple right now. They're really batting 1000. -
You want to check if its enabled. Go to mouse in your control panel, and then click on the "function" tab and make sure the "use scroll function" is enabled.
-
Never mind...
-
Point taken! The mouse issue is fixed, had to reinstall the driver, thats all. -
Heheh, and I deleted my post, felt I was being too smarmy.. Oh well, glad it's all ok now...
An important point is that more and more posters with NEW F11s are not having the classic problems with screens and noise. -
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
.
On another note:
lol this thread is so depressing to read through. I just read through the last few pages and it sounds like the F is the worst thing to ever happen to the human race (it really isn't, I swear by this kitteh)
-
But what was the results, the "Total time" in the free Battery Eater Pro for the two states: 100% & 86%?
If the time is similar with identical Battery Eater settings then the battery charge reporting utility is in error. If the time is significantly different then real battery discharge is occurring.
-
You don't remember when you were researching for a laptop? Didn't you appreciate reading real owners feedback?
I don't "require" feedback on the F, I already have one as you probably know. Give & take is the engine of this thread.
"...better if u offer advice without the sarcasm or whatever u wanna call it" - I call it ironie. Excuse my French but I have Latin blood & culture hence the excess use of emoticons & ironie according to some cold fishes out there.
About your scrolling question, just right click the touchpad icon near the clock > Mouse Properties & play with the settings shown below. You can always revert to Default settings so there is no risks in trying. Or access properties via: S1 > Vaio_Control Center > Keyboard & Mouse > Pointing Device > Advanced.
While you are @ it, check the videos under the Mouse Properties > Multitouch Gestures tab.
Thanks for the feedback!
-
The problem was that I did not have that comprehensive mouse properties dialog box. But as I mentioned before, everything is fixed, just had to reinstall the driver
-
LOL...yeah, the PART1 was getting enormous and now PART2 is getting there as well. What amazing is, I read other series, they only have like 29 page or so haha...how come F have so many??
I agree the F is not a bad machine, its a good machine, however it carries few defects that bothers a lot of people. I consider the light bleed, morse code (and some people that have fan issue) as defect..some people dont. It can be the perfect machine if those issue get taken care. I dont know why its hard for SONY to do so.
If you give it a grades, the machine was 9 and the defect is like minus 3, so overall for me its 6 star machine because of the defects. -
Eh....
Problem is none of us were Sony's target audience. They built the F series for people that go to Best Buy and buy the most expensive machine in the store.
That was a boatload of fail. For the gamers, it's not shiny enough - and for those who have more $$ and don't care about power, they'll go buy a Mac instead.
Everyone else will buy one of the $500 HPs that's on sale - or that Sony CW sitting next to the F series.. it comes in a pretty shade of blue or pink!
Somehow I think Sony was too dumb to realize (strange?) that they would be selling these things to people that care. XD And we're too stupid expecting perfect build quality and high end components in a $1300 laptop. -
Hey Guys... Me again. Hope I'm not being a bug but I have two other issues (along with my high pitch/whine issue) with my last Vaio purchase from Sony Style.
In the bottom right of the screen there is a display for the model number. In my past Best Buy purchases the complete model string was there. It was VPCF115FM/B (I believe). On this model, it looks like the last digits were scratched off. All I see is VPCF1. It is supposed to be VPCF11JFX/B. Well, that's my complete model number. I attached a pic of what it looks like. I apologize for the blurriness of the pic but you can see the scratches.
Two, I see a water drop effect when I move my screen in the top left part of the screen. A slight little shake of the laptop reproduces this every time. What's this about?
All comment are welcome.
True.
Thanks.

such a tragedy...
-
The picture is so blur I cant even see what writing it has. Did you get this F recently?About the screen, I dont know what water drop effects look like, maybe a picture?
-
Yes. I just got the F over the weekend. Sorry about the pic. I only have my iPhone to take pics with. I'll try to find something better and re-post it.
-
It's a CTO, thus the VPCF1 label! VPCF115FMs are CTO as well, but they're large scale CTOs for Best Buy. (Nobody else sells them that I'm aware of).
The LCD shake thing sounds weird, sounds like the LCD itself has a leak! -
Best buy should sell a Lime F series. The tag would then say: VPCF115
XD -
The VPCF1 logo is simply the series and version number. The correct model number can be found in VAIO control Centre/System information. The TECHNICAL model and product code is on the label underneath.
ALL LCDs ripple, mine also has the "Water Drop" effect when I bend the back of the screen enough.
All is fine with this notebook...
-
A Greek tragedy?
From Wikipedia's Greek Tragedy: Mask of Dionysus. -
Hi guys, just wondering how i can remove the uber irritating "Prepare Your Vaio" splashscreen that appears everytime i start my comp! I click on next and it just says there's nothing to prepare -___-" help appreciated

Double Post

For anyone working on 3ds Max renderings on notebooks.
The performance advantage you get out of this machine is quite amazing for a laptop and well worth the issues it comes with. In comparison to i7's and core 2 Duo's, Both of which I have, I just compared a 3ds Max rendering with my 3.06ghx IC2D FW with 8gb DDR2 800mhz Ram Ati 4650HD 1gb Vram, and 128gb Toshiba SSD against my i7-820QM Vaio F
The Max file output was at 1600x900 using mental Ray renderer with Final Gather and Global Illumination turned on. The file also consisted of 139 photometric lights and Sunlight. Sorry I can't post this rendering for client confidentiality.
Vaio F11 - 8Hrs 12 Mins (Complete)
Vaio FW - 18+ Hrs (incomplete - I cancelled rendering at 81.7%)
The power meter on both computers showed 100% usage and only 35% Ram usage.
Unfortunately, you can't run another intensive program like Photoshop or autocad while rendering but you can go browse the internet and watch video streams no problem.
Not bad at all.
EDIT: I have been doing renderings on this machine for the past few days with Some overnight non-stop renderings as well. The 197.16 Nvidia drivers have been holding up well with no crashes and glitches whatsoever. The Vaio F body had only felt slightly warm at the palmrest area and near the vents. -
Can you explain more detail how to unplug the cmos?
Is it pull backward or pull upward?
I already pinch "the connector" with my finger and pulled it backward, but it seems hard to get unplug. I'm afraid the connector was soldered and broken when i pulled too hard.
Once again, many thanks for the advise. -
Agreed, the core 2 duo is no match for the core i processors. That's why people that bought refurbish FW recently, is buying an aged technology...even though it has enough power for daily task, it wont keep up with the newer application that requires more efficient+crunching power. The power is coming from newer technology (core i7,etc) but it has nothing to do with the defects. Intel doesn't create the defects, SONY did.
-
It's not soldered. Just depress the 2 locking tabs on top. Pull towards the green battery (backward) holding by the plug (part where the wires go in), not by the wires nor the female plastic part which is fixed to the motherboard.
-
ehh I must be special! it doesn't show any time!
-
So glad...
I feel like having my F1190X's new born.
Guys, really really appreciate with your brilliant ideas, methods and most.. your supports.
Salute for you.
Many many Thanks.......Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Ha ha very funny. I do think 50% of the complaints are self induced.
-
He said shaking, not bending
are you doing with your screen?! XD
My F, does say VPCF115FM
-
Is the manufactoring date on the outside of the box that the F11 comes in?
-
There should be a white sticker on the bottom of your F with your model name in bold letters. On it, find the letters: "MFD" (manufacturing date)
-
And DVDs. On my desktop Q9450 it takes about 12 minutes to make a DVD in DVDlab: remuxing the Vobs, creating Vobs, creating menus etc.. On the F11 with SSD it took 45 seconds! I thought something was wrong, less than a minute to render a DVD project! That is beyond amazing.
-
That's crazy, so fast!
Just asking around for some advice... eBay user "computerupgradeking" sells CTO F115FM/B for a lower price than if you ordered from Sonystyle, going by the following specs, it would save approximately $300. It seems like a really good deal too since the laptop is sealed in Sony's retail box according to the seller's descript "You will receive the notebook in the original factory condition sealed in Sony retail box. The laptop will be accompanied with all original papers and accessories identical to what Sony provides with a brand new sealed in box notebook."
Intel® Core i7-820QM processor (1.73GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate 64-bit
500GB Hard Disk Drive (5400rpm)
8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
Blu-ray Disc player
16.4" VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080) with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU (1GB VRAM)
There just may be a slight problem with the manufacturer warranty (if Canada's Sony won't take it in due to it being under USA warranty) but I am giving it some serious consideration with the upgrades being less costly. Thoughts on this, guys?
