EDIT: You are right, I've just noticed that when downloading from the web a .ICC profile file, it saves it as .ICC .lnk that's why it needs to be zipped, sorry! Try this & follow the steps: Native_5900K_2.2_109cd-m2.rar I included two ColorChecker charts so you can check the results.

In XP the safely remove icon ALSO doesn't show unless there's actually a USB storage device connected.

Yes but the point is in Win 7: once you connect a USB device, you can then add to hidden Icons & customize for the next time you will connect a device.

An other small thing: when customizing, I was constantly restarting so I changed the default Shutdown for Restart: Right-click on Start, select Properties, and choose the Power button action that you use the most.

"Windows 7 does not place a link to your videos on the Start Menu by default. To add a link to your videos on the Start Menu, right-click Start, select Properties, click on Customize. In the Videos section at the bottom, choose Display as a link."

I downloaded it and installed to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color, but I can't add it in the Profiles associated with this device window in Color Management. It's not listed in the Associate Color Profile window. I tried clicking browse in the Associate Color Profile window and clicking on Native_5900K_2.2_109cd-m2 to install it but it doesn't work.

I have one of the first F11s made an it has both the high-pitched whining noise near the fan and the "morse-code" beeping noise. Sony is sending a tech to do onsite repair in the next few days and I'll update after he arrives. I like the notebook, but the fan noise is loud compared to other notebooks I've used. Overall, it has nice specs but it's a bit irritating to use daily.

I've noticed something on my laptop. It's starts making this morse-code beeping when I plug something in one of the USB-ports. The moment I remove it, it stops beeping. Does somebody else has the same mysterious effect?

Your "Interruptions" are extremely welcome. You are the only fellow here (or anywhere) giving ongoing gaming results for this laptop. Furthermore I've made a couple of buying decisions for games based upon your Youtube videos.

Thanks, and keep up the good work! :)

Yesterday I asked a question about Norton Internet Security on my new F. Unfortunately no one addressed Norton and suggested other anti virus software. I have been using Norton on my Vaio AR since it arrived 3 years ago with no problems. I pay the annual subscription fee. I contacted Norton support and was pleased to learn that my current license entitles me to install Norton Internet Security on up to 3 computers. The reply said to enter my product key when I activate the 30 day trial on the new computer. I will not have to install additional software and am already familiar with Norton. Best of all it will cost $0.

Everything I hear about the latest Norton version seem to be positive. And I do use Norton in my work computer and my other personal computer. Just that when it came time to re-new (on my personal computer), they were charging more than what the sale price of Kaspersky 2010 was ($49.99), and I thus went for Kaspersky.

I'm sorry I was not around to answer the Norton question, but yes, mine came with 3 licenses also. I always used Norton, but then I switched to McAfee and also Trend Micro when Norton got bad a few years ago. I switched back to Norton Internet Security last year when 2010 came out. I feel that they all have plusses and minuses, so I opt for speed, resource usage and ease of use. NIS 2010 ranks high in all catagories, and I have felt the better performance of less resource usage on my 7 year old Dell Dimension 4600. I would reccommend it.

No problem. I am happy with Norton Internet Security 2010. It seems to be using minimal resources. I am also happy that I do not have to pay an additonal fee to run it on the new F.

This is a little off topic but hope it will help. In mid December there was a message on my computer that Norton Internet Security 2010 was downloaded and ready to install. I gave it the go ahead. I noticed it took an exceptionally long time to uninstall the old version but finnally the installation completed, the computer rebooted and everything was fine for a couple of days. I had left the computer unattended for an hour or so. When I went back the screen was black with the ominous "Operating system not found". Everything I tried came back to that same message. Finally I shut the computer off. When I turned it back on I was prompted that Windows had an abnormal shutdown. I chose to do a normal Windows startup. Windows came back and said the disk needed to be checked for errors. It was a time consuming process but it found four frgamented files and did security and integrity checks. I have had no problems since.

I am assuming that Norton started the idle time full disk scan and ran into problems when it encountered the fragmented files. My advice to anyone who uninstalls Norton is to check your disk for errors.

I think VT is not enabled on Windows 7 Home Premium. I have Home Premium and I am running Guest Windows XP and Guest Mac OS with no problem. I tried installing Windows XP 64-bit on vmware and it gave me an error says VT is not enabled in BIOS. Can we enable VT in BIOS even if we are running Windows 7 Home Premium?

ok, so im planning on ordering an F1190X

i just started reading the thread yesterday and thought to start from page 100, but its taking longer than i thought, i've spent nearly 4 hours, just reading and i've only gotten through 31 pages, and atm where im at, its January 23rd (post #1310), whats happening is that the F's cannot be ordered from SS sites and there is a C2D website error(?), so can someone fill me in as to whats happened in the next 400 pages.

also here is the config im planning to order:
    CTO F1190X
    i7-720qm
    4GB RAM
    320GB 5400rpm
    Premium Display (1920x1080)
    NVIDIA 330M
    Backlit Keyboard (maybe)

im buying from an Ebay Store @ $1225 (US)

    any problems with this config?

EDIT: i just checked US SS same config is nearly the same price ($16 cheaper) so would it be better to get it from the SS online store? im livin in the UK so im gonna have it shipped here, but i still wanna get the ADH warranty, in-case something does happen (dropped, big spill, ect.) or does anyone know of a good UK 3rd-party warranty provider such as Square-trade in the US? thx

As I understand you're running VMware to run virtual MAC in XP? Win 7 Pro has builtin Virtual support, XP and Win 7 Premium do not. VT can be enabled in the F11's Bios, that's nothing to do with the OS being used.

Melody- The Iomega is a 1TB eSATA External HD. Now, the idea of a self powered drive tickles me some, but it also means that I might not get what I'm looking for in other features.
The mouse is not bluetooth, but isn't the dongle pretty small?
    Look how tiny it is:

Do you think that the cooler is really that necessary on a laptop that has no heating problems, or that's not being currently used for games? I do like that silver one, but it's $70!

Sorry to get dirty here but...hehe the girl said "chest..."

And also, what did you mean by "your inventment?"

was that a Canada only thing?
Dude, a lot of stuff happened in the last 400 pages, as to your order, you may be sorry you didn't get a 7200 RPM drive, everything else is a nice deal, but factor in a HDD upgrade in the future. Also, whats shipping on that?
    Sorry about the long post.

I really love this laptop cooler. It fits perfectly with the F11, looks great, has a very gradual slope which improves position, has five USB ports, and you can adjust the speed of the three fans. It the processor is cranking I increase the fan speed. I do keep it at my desk at work when I use it all day- not a portable cooler. It does reduce temp considerably and through the lifetime of a laptop, cooler temps can only be a good thing.

Hmm......another good analogy would be with a mosquito sound :)
Or that sound made when connection with an old modem but at a higher frequency.

Anyway....my sound is not fan noise since it is influenced by my direct action(like typing this reply...each time i press a char the sound is interupted for that moment) Also the MIC fix did not work for me.

The noise is not lauder then a mosquito sound but because it is not constant(like the fan) it is pretty anoying.

It is triggered when I start certain applications.
    Hasnt anyone else noticed this?!

Yes, as I said before the noise on my laptop is definately triggered by itunes, media player, iplayer desktop and sometimes internet explorer. In other words things that use the speakers. Although sometimes it doesn't get triggered, the only sure program is itunes; it starts and stops instantly when I open and close itunes.
Also Win DVD did not trigger it and sometimes it'll start for no reason whatsoever when nothing is open.

Through my personal experience, I did not think it was a speakers related issue, but rather related to system load. The sound I hear comes from the top left, where the fan is, area around the "Esc" key.

Any time I open up a program or run a game, causing the computer to "think" I would hear the sound. If the laptop sits idle with no programs open, it is mostly silent. As soon as I open up any program the sound starts, even if I mute the speakers, I still hear it.

iTunes uses up a lot of "thinking" power on computers.

I watched the video but I did not process and remember anything so I was curious the FPS they were getting.

If you are planing to ship to a US address that will forward to you, it's not a very good deal considering the ebay "warranty" & that for $125 more on BestBuy_VPCF115FM you get 500gb HDD vs 320, 6gb memory vs, 4. That's the one I got.

If you pay UK import tax, then check this US vs. EU Premium matte 1080p display data. I would have gladly paid up to $150 more to get that screen.

As MelodyMaster suggested, I may swap the US display for an EU after the end of the warranty period & ebay the US screen to recoup some $.

The Vaio F117FDB with the nVidia 1GB GT 330M GPU was supposed to be available today, March 1, from Sony Canada. I checked today, and it's now listed as Out of stock. Only the base model F111FDB, and the F113FDB, (base with 6GB RAM), are available.

    1) Yes I have tried the mic fix with no success.
    2) Mine is an i5 model of the F so heat is less of an issue but....
    3) Tweaking the minimum processor state had no affect. I tried it at 4 and 6%, should I be going further?
    4) My laptop is already on a dedicated notebook stand and feels cool to the touch.

The sound is roughly coming from the fan but I would say it was louder towards the front, near the space bar.

Joe, I've tried your other profiles and have had no issues, however, this one is not working for me either.

When I right click and save link as I try C:\Windows\System 32, but there is no spool folder. I have to save the profile somewhere else and then right click on it and choose "install profile". That puts it in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color. Strangely, when I click on Computer and then C:\Windows... the spool folder is there. It's just not there when I tried installing the profile directly.

I did the above steps, however when I click "Add" per instruction number 7, Native_5900K_2.2_109cd-m2.ICC is not among the list of profiles. I even tried "Browse" and went directly to the color folder and clicked on Native_5900K_2.2_109cd-m2.ICC and then "Add" and it still won't appear in the list of profiles like shown below.

I know I am following the steps correctly because I have successfully installed and used 3 different profiles. I don't know what's going wrong. The only thing I noticed that's different from when I installed the first 3 is that after installing the drivers and software for my Canon Pixma printer 8 Canon profiles are now in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color, which I first noticed in the Associated Color Profiles window. I doubt that the extra Canon profiles are the culprit as I noticed that two other people couldn't get the profile to work.

I've updated the steps with some screen grabs: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5957637#post5957637

EDIT: I've just noticed that when downloading from the web a .ICC profile file, it saves it as .ICC .lnk that's why it needs to be zipped, sorry! Try this & follow the steps: Native_5900K_2.2_109cd-m2.rar I included two ColorChecker charts so you can check the results.

I just did it again with a test profile, tell me if it worked for you.

I noticed that I always set in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files which is not on by default. I've added a workaround in the steps (Look In Recent Documents) for those who don't want to do this.

Hey guys, after being disappointed with the Envy 15, I'm considering a Vaio F. I'm worried about the performance of the 330m though. Is there a chance Sony will upgrade the GPU by June?

How about the size of the machine? I understand it's about 7 lbs, but how thick is it?

    Thanks in advance.

Really? It always shows for me in XP (and it shows the DVD drive as the item that can be removed) - that's why I was confused when switched to Win 7 and it didn't show.

BTW still enjoying my F11 =) No real problems yet. *fingers crossed*

They might, but the 33m can do HD games and many in high quality settings. Do a youtube search.

    Joe Bleau,

It works. I was able to install your profile. :)

I downloaded WinRar and extracted it to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and followed slrosenfeld's instructions.

    Thanks.
