Yes, that was the other reason. We have a Japanese member in this thread & maybe he could translate Nongureapaneru as I can't find one for it but I guess it's anti-glare as these 2 photos from http://kunkoku.exblog.jp/9701389/ seems to compare glossy with matte:

    [IMG] [IMG]

That makes me want to wait & see if the matte will be offered in the US market.

Ok, how about this image from this site: http://blog.so-net.ne.jp/vaio_ones/2010-01-22

Still, the "Nongureapaneru" question remains. :)

Comparing screens on pictures has very limited meaning.

Actually I expect almost always there will be someone interested in the link. In this case I was.

And I agree it's also nicer to the original website.

I just tried the color profile and it seems to work pretty good.... all the greys i had been looking at before are suddenly grey instead of bluish ......

also i dont think the display is glossy or matte ( BB model) when off the screen is very reflective and reflections are very defined how eve when it is on I see very few reflections at all

Glad it looks better but considering the cost of the laptop & the fact that you can use-it on other computers too, a colorimeter is a good investment if you want accurate colors. There is always variations between two monitors, check the colors in this previous post, they are both probably using the Sony default profile but yet the reds & the island are quite different (sure it could be the WB of the photographer too):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5785390&postcount=1602

The colors you see on the monitor will vary if you compare during daylight to under a lamp at night. With a colorimeter, you can create different profiles according to your ambient light variations & the color representation on the monitor will remain constant. It's the difference between "pretty" and "accurate" colors.

Your example will only be different because one has a Matte screen and one has a glossy screen. This will cause the color difference to look different.

Vlak I think we're all waiting for you on this one :) Care to share any more details, screenshots or vid?

    1. Is the display semi-glossy or completely matte
    2. By any chance, did you get a backlit keyboard?
    3. How does it compare (especially the screen) with your Studio XPS (speakers too?)
    4. Pics/Vids :)

    Thanks!

That's the point! The colors of a photo should remain the same if it's the "true" colors.

I had an office for my websites with 5 different monitors. The same photo looked very different from one to the other. After calibration, bringing up a color rendition chart, all looked very similar afterwards.

5 different monitors vs laptops with the same exact hardware usually will be no different between them. A Matte screen vs a Glossy will make a color change.

    Sorry, that contradicts my experience.

    Monitor Calibration: Who needs it?

"If you can not trust the colors displayed on your monitor, all other color management is a waste of time. Calibrating and profiling your monitor should, therefore, be your first priority. Luckily, it is the easiest part of the image capture, editing, and printing system to profile." from: http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitor_calibration.htm

Is the stock nvidia driver the latest out there? And if it is - when a new one arrives do you generally see an increase in fps?

My only concern right now is Call of Duty: World at War. At native resolution with low settings and config tweaks I get 40-60 (mostly 40's though). I was hoping to get into the 50's constantly.

Doubtful as nvidia comes out with updates often. It is best to download the latest drivers from nvidia.com instead of the manufacture for the video cards.

Got mine today. Setting it up for the wife right now. Basically just removing all the bloatware. I noticed that this comes with a recovery partition like the Dells do, which is nice.

I did have the microphone issue. It sounds more like someone is trying to send you a very high pitched Morse code message. The temp fix made short work of it.

So far, no other issues. The keyboard flex is not bad and we dont pound on the keys hard enough to notice. The screen needs to be adjusted but to be honest, I probably never would have noticed it were I not reading this forum.

Just got a package from San Diego in the Mail :D.

    First Impressions:

The packaging is really quite nice - mine came with the laptop tray and a carrying handle. Definitely reusable, if you want to use it to move your laptop around (although I don't see anybody doing so...).

The laptop itself is GORGEOUS, really it's more beautiful in person than online (I got the black one). The keyboard is amazingly nice to type on (I thought my keyboard on my old Z1RA was nice, but the one on the F11 feels much more like the keyboards that come with (I'd say it's just as good or better to use).

THE NOISE (dun dun dun....). Yes, it's there. Do I care? No. Honestly, it's very faint, and there's a fix (which works!) It's hard to describe, almost like a very faint morse code-esque noise in the background. The fix works, btw. Fan noise is minimum as well. Not noticeable unless you're looking for it.

SCREEN: Yes, it does look dull (I have yet to try and calibrate). Text is easily readable. The glare really isn't THAT noticeable, but it's certainly not matte (I have the US 1080p screen).

PERFORMANCE: I have the Core i7 720 (the slower one) No real benchmarks/numbers yet, but man THIS THING FLIES compared to my old computer. And oh yeah, having 8 cores show up in the task manager sure is a good feeling :p.

KEYBOARD FLEX: Yeah, but who cares? It doesnt look like it's going to break (doesn't feel like it's going to break, actually the whole laptop feels very solid when you pick it up, especially for it's heavy weight).

I'll send more updates as I get to play with it more, but for now, I'm really happy with this laptop :D.

Can anyone confirm that the laptop downclocks to 900mhz on battery and wont go any higher?

Also check your settings under power management. They should show 100% for all power states for full performance?

i am really puzzled as to the exact reason why the F was pulled out of the USA site. according to the online chat person at sonystyle usa the reason is "There was an inconsistency sony noticed with the pricing, that is why it was completely removed until the issue could be rectified". does this mean that they may be increasing the pricing of the F series?

Ok so Play.Com have pushed their delivery date till the 15th Feb! I called Sony and they claim all initial stock is reserved for pre-orders and stores won't have it for another month.

Now, even though their price is 100GBP above Play.Com, they've tried to entice me with an offer which i'm considering, which would basically leave me paying approx 1,260 GBP for the laptop with 1 Year Extra Warranty, a VAIO backpack, wireless Presenter Mouse and remote.

For this, I sacrifice 180 GB worth of HD space (i have a spare 500 Gig I can slot in) but I get "Premium Black" finish for approx 60 pounds more than Sony Store's initial RRP for the F11S1E and thus 160 GBP more than I was initially paying at Play.Com

What you guys reckon? Dish it up or wait for Play.com to have it delivered on the 15th?

Also, for those who ordered to the UK, approximately how long after your initial order did you receive the shipping notice (how long did it take to build)?

Even though the offer isn't confirmed yet, they're going to call me back.

Thanks :) Very anxious as the laptop i'm using now is a complete and utter pile of c**p (it hangs when I scroll through those F11 pics posted earlier).

That's interesting. I wonder if that has anything to do with Best Buy's price change. I bought it at BB for $1249 the first day I saw it and maybe a week later (not even) they had bumped the price up $100.

Yet another new reason why the F was pulled. Honestly, now that the F's are starting to reappear on sale in several sonystyle sites, It's probably best to wait it out. (can't be much longer...)

I just received my Sony Vaio F Series. It looks really awesome. As for the high pitched sound, I do indeed here it, but it isn't bad enough to bother me very much. The temporary fix worked on it, and I'm assuming that Sony will hopefully come out with a patch for it like was stated in here, and everything will be okay. Everything else seems to be fine with the machine so far. I haven't really gotten a chance to look at it much yet, but I'll make sure to take some pictures later.

I wonder if the 'premium black' version in the photos shown has a rubberized palmrest?. If that's the case then it makes more sense to have transferjet on it since the technology mentions placing a camera on top of the palmrest to initiate data transfer. (only benefit really is to prevent scratches)
There is a US preconfig model with transferjet. Did anyone get it? and is your palmrest rubberized(?) like the premium black?

Thanks Vlak! Looks nice. Just to clarify, when you say the Studio XPS was a mirror do you mean the display on the VAIO is equal to the XPS? Or the XPS was very glossy?

Did you have the RGBLED screen on the XPS? Am just asking because I heard it is fantastic and if the VAIO screen matches it in terms of colour I will pay the extra and buy from Sony tomorrow :)

Is the sound really bad? :( Or was the XPS just extra good :).

    Thanks again!

Has anyone noticed a squealing static noise mostly from the left speaker when you start up BD playback, Windows Media Player or online like Pandora? I've disabled the microphone to take care of the other problem but when I start listening to something there's static at least at the start of playback. It's not over headphones. Bad speaker connection?

I haven't noticed that. The only "strange" notice after disabling the mic issue is a very faint, high pitched, occasional noise coming from the fan only noticed in a dead-quiet room. This is going to be my wife's laptop so I asked her to listen to the noise and she said "what noise?" That was good enough for me.

Has anyone compared the 1080p screen with the standard 1600x900 screen? (The screen brightness, watching Blu-Ray movies, etc)?

I don't like the small font in the 1920x1080 res, although you can enlarge the font to 125%, I was not sure if spending additional money for the high resolution and then using enlarged font made the high res choice redundant - that is why I ordered the 1600x900 with my CTO order from the US site last week.

Now I am having second thoughts  - please advise if I am missing something or if I made the wrong choice. I can increase the RAM or change the DH later - but the screen is only once.

    My CTO specs:
    i7-720QM |(1600x900)310M GPU |4GB RAM |Blu-ray player| KB Backlight |Standard Capacity Battery | Gray | W7 Professional |500GB HD(7200rpm)

    Hi tcklim,

I would say the offer with the accessories is a good one and an extra 1yr warranty alone is worth £75!

I ordered yesterday from Sonystyle.co.uk and I have a delivery date no later than 5th Feb. So, why not have a look at the customisable setup and play with the different combinations to try and get to £1200 on their page here...

    https://www.sonystyle.co.uk/SonyStyle/VAIO-Laptop-PCs/F-Series-16-4?config=x&csint=14003185

Edit: meh, now says 3 to 4 weeks! (Said 2 to 3 weeks yesterday)

    matt ;)

The 1600*900 screen is probably the single lamp ECO screen like used before in the FW. It's an average screen.

The 1920*1080 is dual lamp CCFL and has much higher saturation, contrast and brightness.

Both screens have been reviewed and measured when they were in the FW on Notebookcheck.com and Notebookjournal.de

From my experience vendors seem to use the higher quality screens with the highest resolutions. I can't say if that's the case here or not.

Also, Blu-ray is 1080 so I'm not sure you'll experience as much detail with a screen of 900.

My rule of thumb is to try and get the highest resolution screen. This usually means the best quality and if the text is too small I always have the option to bump it up. Of course, the one draw back is for gaming where the lower resolution option will help rather than hurt.

I've ordered the F11M1E/H from shop.bt.com. I dunno how the prices for the higher specs compare with play.com but it worked out about the same for that model. I got an email today saying they'll have stock in on the 5th of Feb.

    Hope that helps

Also as this is my first post, thank you everyone for the help on this forum. I'm really looking forward to getting my new laptop!

What's important is the estimated delivery date when you order.
They are selling like hot cakes so delivery times will increase over time.

The Sony Style rep suggested 1600x900 has the 16:9 ratio for the Blu-Ray - and there is not much difference in picture sharpness etc. That swayed me plus I was not sure how using a larger than default font effects many applications - I plan on using 3d modeling, Revit/CAD etc.
Has anyone ordered the 1600x900? I did not see many on this forum which is making me question my choice.

Have you read my post ZoneA? I'm pretty sure it's accurate.

If you're ok with having a normally good screen the 1600*900 will do. If you want high contrast and brightness the 1920*1080 is the way to go.

And actually it's all the time anytime there's a sound for the first time. I was going through Themes and for each theme there would be static either from the left or right speaker.

Thanks Matt. I think i'll probably follow that advice if they come through with the offer tomorrow. He said he'd throw in expedited shipping so that should probably shave a few days off once it actually reaches the U.K. and I find the Premium Black finish quite appealing :)

Thanks Sheena. If Sony doesn't come through tomorrow I might just go with the F11S1E from BT then, it's only 5 pounds more than Play.

Certainly seems so. I would be ordering tomorrow about 14:00 GMT so hopefully it wouldn't have changed too much since then. The rep on the phone said he's sure i'd have it within 3 week.s

I believe with the lower resolution screen you are also getting a low-end 310 card. (The GT330 is available with the premium screen and performance wise a whole lot better than the 310)
I use autoCAD 2010 and 3ds max. I needed the more powerful card especially if you're planning to do any kind of modeling.
