But sales doesn't tell you that one laptop is better than another, it's just a popularity contest, i.e main reason why people bought NC10 over any other netbook. I've sold more acer laptops than sony, probably 4 to 1 in sales, as well as selling 4 times more lenovo's than sony..

The best netbook on the market for price/performance is probably the HP Mini 311, Nvidia 9400M, 1366*768 Screen, HDMI, DDR 3, WWAN, and great speakers, yet you don't see it in any store, not seen even one in any store in the uk, now ask yourself why? I don't even know the answer.. People just buy because of the Name and popularity, i.e lets get an NC10 casue everyone else has one, same as the film avatar, it's popular so people watch it, doesn't mean it's good or the best thing out there...

On the other hand, I only buy what suits me not what everyone else gets...., I bought the TZ purely because of the screen, still not seen an LCD today that gives a more vivid and eyepopping picture than it, a truly amazing screen, you can have 20 laptops side by side and the TZ will stand out... shame you can't get a screen like that on laptops thesedays, thse led backlit screens on netbook and laptops these days are not even close to the crispness and quality of the TZ Screen, only Lappy I have seen that can compete is the HP Envy 13".. great screen on it, blacks are black, and white are white, everything just pops out at you..

To me the TT display is by far the best display that i've seen on a laptop. I was bowled over by it from the start but it took a day or so to get used to it. I haven't seen anything like it. It's meant to have an 8 bit display but that might just be marketing i don't know.
I've also tried out the TZ and whilst i noticed that it had a nice display it did not bowl me over quite the same way that the TT display did.
Each to their own i guess.
I'm also not even even 100% sure that all TT panels are the same; the later models may possibly differ.
The ultraportable market has moved on. It is the reason why the TT ceases to exist or any other form of incarnation. A lot of people are just not prepared a premium for an 11" ULV ultraportable laptop.
I see that the Toshiba R600 has met its demise also.
I recommend if you do want to buy a TT now look around for a good deal, that's what i did.

I'm actually looking for an acer ferrari with 3G since the stock ferrari doesn't have a mini pci-e connecter soldered on, can that sony ebay guy of yours solder it on?, I managed to get Huawei 7.2mb/s mini pci-e 3G card from a lappy so want to put it to good use, unlike the Sony Card in the Lenovo's the Generic Dashboard actually works in Windows 7, also regarding the ferrari the 1.2GHZ AMD L310 CPU is actually pretty good, on par with Intel U7500, can actually notice speed difference especially when coming from an atom, can open quite a few more IE windows now and no slow down.. The CPU can be upgraded to a 1.6GHZ AMD L510, just need to find a laptop which has it for reasonable price so I can swap the cpu's then sell lappy on, let me know if you come by one....

Don't think I can get it up to Speed with your TT, especially since i'm limited by DDR2 Memory...

The Acer is nice, but as stated you won't get the beautiful screen of the TT. I would love to upgrade to a newer LV i5 or i7 device like the X201, but it is the screen of the TT(and a few other nice things) that keep me coming back. Now only if there was a way to get a new i core cpu and usb 3.0 installed in the TT, hmmmm.

The TT Sony uses DDR3 memory.
Contact vaiorefurbs and see what he says. He took a sim card holder of another donar board and soldered it on for me to another board. He probably will be able to help you.
US models actually come with a Gobi worldwide card which i found very easy to do a clean install with and have no problems with W7.
The Option card was fine for me also.
This current gen Intel integrated graphics i think may perform better than the 3200 in your laptop so unless you really do love the looks may be look around for a ultraportable with a ULV i series processor.
@ coldmack you can also get a expresscard 3.0 card.

That not a bad price on usb 3.0 card, but I'd prefer it built in as it is backwards compliant.

Having an integrated one sure is neater.
This one though looks to be backwards compliant. Actually i think all usb 3.0 are backwards compliant.

I think i might buy one of these, it sure looks a lot better to me than the others i've seen.

I would use it to copy stuff to my HD occasionally.
I'm not sure what you can do and can't do without a power supply?

I also hope that i wouldn't cause any damage to my motherboard.

    ...................
I bought one from here, they have an online shop as well and also sell them on ebay.

It should be only items that require 5V that i'd need to use a power supply for. I'll use it for my SZ as well.

I bought one of these also.

Just wanted to say I've been extremely happy with my TT, a year and a half after I bought it.

I honestly don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. It feels very responsive (once I upgraded to Windows 7, 4gb RAM and an SSD) to the point that I actually use it as my primary home computer (docked in a docking station).

It doesn't bother me that 11.6" screen laptops are so much cheaper now, I still feel I got my money's worth with the TT!

@meansizzler i don't have it yet i just placed an order late in the afternoon on Tuesday and it might take me a while to get the external HD from Scan but i will post my thoughts when i get it.

On another note the SU9600 gets around 1391-1434 in the cpu passmark test. I know i run this test. In single threaded mode it seems to spend most time running at 1.8ghz.

Going by the W7 passmark scores alone it seems to be a little bit above the
i3 330UM which scores around 1215-1250 (it doesn't have turbo mode but the 4 threads boosts the performance). The i5 430UM scores between 1479-1550 according to some forum members in the Acer forum. The i7UM clearly out performs them all but the SU9600 compares quite well to some of the latest i series UM processors. Also, upgrading down the line to a SU9600 if you demand a bit more power years ahead is a possiblity, i know Coldmack mentioned wanting an i series ULV processor. These C2D ULV laptops also seem to get better battery life also. I can get over 10hrs battery life out of the TT and especially when you use built in 3G those extra hours help.
I noticed that the Acer Ferrari One gets about 4-5hrs battery life, i'm not sure if you can get a 9 cell for this model.

You know i'm using my SZ still as well. I have no trouble playing HD using the integrated x3100 graphics with 3GB of ram but the processor is pretty powerful.

The 4500 is more than enough for my needs as i don't game, playing this clip on my TT in HD the processor never seemed to top over 33% this is with the latest Flash and it run smoothly, my memory also sat at 18%. The newer intel graphics is clearly superior though. Hopefully the next gen processors will improve on the battery life.

With 8GB ram, SSD and a SU9600 the TT is no slouch.

I'm also not sure what benefit DDR3 ram will give you over DDR2 which the TT doesn't use anyway when they both run at 800mhz and appear similar according to the spec sheet. If you want to do overclocking which isn't easily done then i understand.

I think I mentioned the LV i core cpu, but either way I hear the new GPU is suppose to be a bit more efficient and come close to the popular nvidia 9400m. Kind of makes you wonder how the TT battery life would be with something like i430um. BTW I forgot, but how are you achieving 10 hours of battery life? Is it with a larger than average battery?

If I have the SU9300 cpu, how hard would it be to get the cpu swapped out to SU9600? I know that it is soldered on, but can you just de-solder cpu and then install the new one? And if I do go that route in the future, could one just go with the SL9000 series cpu as they both can use the same mobo/chipset?

Battery life, i have a SSD it might help a little. Also, i use silent mode in the Vaio control centre. I also turn the ambient light sensor of. Also, i turn the dvd drive of. I also put the intel graphics into max power savings in the control centre. I also use power saver mode and set the display at about 30%. Also, i have tweaked the power saver profile to max possibly battery life. I have also set the wireless adapter settings- transmit power and roaming aggressiveness to medium.
I also use FF and ad block plus and no script.
It is over 10hrs actually and this is with the standard battery.

It is not that hard to upgrade the processor as long as you have the right tools. I guess you could send it to Vaiorefurbs in the UK who doesn't charge that much to do it. You could also look for someone in the USA who will upgrade it for you for a decent price.

Yes, you can upgrade to a SL9600 also. A link was posted earlier to someone who has done just that.

Thank you for posting that. I didn't see any mentioning of soldering or the related. I thought the cpu was soldered on, no? Do you also have a link to somewhere that maybe able to do the swap(desktop no prob, but laptops seem a bit harder)?

It is soldered and would you would need to have a BGA job done. It is not that hard to do if you have these tools to do the job i meant.
I sent a laptop to vaiorefurbs on ebay to do this. More and more people seem to be doing this though so you might find someone who does this for a very good price in the US.
I paid £110 for vaiorefurbs to take a soldered CPU of another board and transplant it to another motherboard. I bought a broken motherboard of ebay and used the cpu from that board.
I know there is a forum member who offers this service also and they are based in the US so it probably would be easier for you. You would have less shipping to pay as well.
May be contact them to discuss a price

I do have the 3.0 Photofast expresscard now. It is much lighter and smaller than i expected.
It uses a NEC 3.0 controller. It's not flush now but that is because of the design of the TT. It is the same lenght as the Sony SD card adapter is completely flush when i use it in my Sony SZ.
It looks fine though; the silver TT chrome helps to disguise it a bit also. Looking at it aerial view downwards you can hardly see it.
The drivers come on a cd.

I have attached some pictures. The first picture i took it looking at it aerial view down and the 3rd i took it facing in front of me.

    LOL
I'm not sure if i'm getting this right. I have my USB 3.0 HD now. I plugged it in directly to the expresscard and i cannot get it to work. I did though plug 2 USB 2.0 sticks into it and it did work..when i figured to turn it the right way round lol.

Anyway, i tried plugging the HD into a USB 2.0 port using the 3.0 usb cable/3.0 external HD plugged in and it worked.
Is this how it is meant to be, may be i'll start a thread in hardware forum if no-one knows.

    Btw,.....it's fast.

Looking at the cable on the their website, seems the usb 3 end into expresscard, usb 2.0 end into usb 2 slot on laptop and micro usb 3.0 end into device..

I assume that's the cable they gave to you..

I'm actually looking for an ultra portable with built in spursengine for H264 encoding, but don't think they make one...

Also One think I like about the Lenovo X200 was the dock, you can pop the laptop in there, which covers the whole base and use it as a stand, so the bottom of the lappy won't get's scratched just carry it under your arm, also allows you to use it on carpet, while providing good airflow.

Also you can use it in bed, and roll over on it and the lid would take the pressure, a Vaio TZ won't and i'm not sure a TT will, in either case it wouldn't get any airflow due to fan being blocked...

With the ferrari it's lid is pretty hard topped and popping a dvd case underneath raises it for adequate airflow

I just put a HD that used to be in my SZ into the enclosure. I think it might draw too much power and the enclosure hasn't got a connector for me to use a power adapter and neither does the expresscard either.
With VAT and shipping the external HD ended up costing me £28...a waste of money it seems. May be i should have got that one from ebay.

It seems that i can also buy one of these
Y type USB 5V DC power supply Cable
What good is it going to do though when i cannot use it for my external HD?

I have my TT dual boot vista/linux debian. I have a little bit of problem with booting, so I want to reinstall mbr. Normally I would boot from MS windows disc, and run repair, and fixmbr. But how do you do it in TT without the boot disc? In the recovery disc, there are options to repair to c: drive, repairs to windows, etc. But both say it would format the c: drive. So, How do I access windows repair and run fixmbr?

    Hey all,

I'd really like to buy a brand new TT with Windows 7 for use in the UK.

I had a TX2 which I loved, unfortunately it got stolen.

I'm looking for something with a 11.1 inch screen AND a DVD player and it looks like Sony don't have anything in their current lineup.

However the Sony Asia site is still advertising the TT TT Series : VAIO Notebook : Sony Asia Pacific

Can anyone tell me if it is still available to buy and shipped to the UK?

    Thanks

    Alex

I think the stock is almost depleted, but there may be some left over here and there in Asia. I didn't see any in Taiwan when I was there last month.

You can find an importer, such as Conics.net and see if they are willing to work with you to get Japanese SonyStyle clearance here:

    VGN-TT93HSEVGN-TT93GSEVGN-TT93FS - Sony Style

Currency is not the greatest right now, but it's probably easier than hunting it down one country by one country.

Also, keep an eye on the Sony outlet store in the UK. From time to time they get Sony TT's in. They seem to be out of stock at the moment and may well have run out of new old stock but they do get refurbished models in from to time. They had quite a few about a month or so ago and the prices they were selling them for was pretty decent.

Btw, i used to have a TX and the TT is a very nice upgrade.
Refurbished models come with warranty, not sure how long you get but of course refurbished items is not ok for everyone. You might be able to extend the warranty but contact Sony to make sure.

I'm not sure if Conics would help you with importing a laptop but you could try! May be PriceJapan would though be able to do this for you.

Thanks for the tips you guys. I've emailed Pricejapan and Conics with my request. Let's see what they say, if I get any joy I'll post back to the forum

Can you tell me where the Sony Outlet store is in the UK? I did a google search and came up with nothing.

Also what's the consensus on which of the TT models was the best one to go for. It's a work computer so I have an unlimited budget paid for by my business

    Good luck with that

You say that you want a laptop with a dvd drive then i would say that a TT with a bluray drive, SU9600, 4GB (you can upgrade later if you so decide to or get it included now) and a 256GB SSD was a good option to go for. Also, you can get one with a 5300 wifi card. The wwan card in Japan seems to be locked to Domico or something like that.

I'm not sure if you would open and upgrade your laptop yourself but if you're willing to do that you could go for a mechanical drive and may be get another single SSD like Intel or like OCZ Vertex 2 which i believe is the fastest 1.8 SSD you can get.
    Scan.co.uk: OCZSSD1-2VTX120G - 120GB OCZ Technology Vertex 2, 1.8" Sandforce SSD, 50K IOPS, MLC-Flash, Read 285MB/s, Write 275MB/s

    Scan.co.uk: OCZSSD1-2VTX120G - 120GB OCZ Technology Vertex 2, 1.8" Sandforce SSD, 50K IOPS, MLC-Flash, Read 285MB/s, Write 275MB/s

To locate the outlet store go to sony.co.uk and click on the configure options for the laptops. Click on any model and on the left you should see a link for the outlet store.

wanted to give everyone some useful heads up info:
i bought a great condition second hand TT on yahoo japan auctions. Got a good price but found out that they can't post it over with the battery. new rules state that lithium ion batteries can't be sent by air. so i have to get my laptop sent without the battery :( .

need to find a battery over here now. anyone have any experience with aftermarket batteries like these ones?

btw i don't suppose anyone has a set of the noise cancelling earphones they haven't used they'd like to sell to me?

i travel a lot and they'd be very handy on the planes. i've seen quite a few second hand tt's for sale where people say they have unused sets of the headphones so i'm guessing lots of people never use them. my used one didn't come with them though.

wouldn't this fail though as the overseas sellers couldn't ship the battery via air either?

I doubt it, not sure if i believe either the explanation you were given either.
I'm sure companies like Conics or Dynamism though don't ship laptops out without batteries.
I bought a battery from the US this year and i got it without any problems.
I'm not sure when this new rule is meant to come into effect though.

I too questioned the transport of batteries but found it was valid. I can only assume retailers are ignoring the rules or not mentioning the fact the product contains batteries. It even extends to watches and digital cameras: Australia Post - Dangerous goods

    "Lithium batteries
All lithium batteries are now classified as dangerous goods and cannot be carried by air.

Australia Post cannot accept lithium batteries or devices containing lithium batteries for mailing overseas or for domestic air carriage. Parcels containing these items will now only be transported within Australia and by road only.

We have developed guidelines which set out the requirements that must be met when posting lithium batteries or items containing them, including watches, clocks, mobile phones and MP3 players.

For more information, refer to the customer guidelines for sending lithium batteries (pdf 48kb) ."

Hi everyone. Pricejapan said they would be willing to send the Vaio TT from Japan to the UK for me.

However they are asking what spec I need from this site: VGN-TT93HSEVGN-TT93GSEVGN-TT93FS - Sony Style

Unfortunately I can't get google to translate it from the japanese.

Can anyone tell me what spec I should have? I definitely would like to have the carbon black. However, the rest I'm unsure about.

    1) a) VGN-TT93HS or
    b)VGN-TT93GS or
    c) VGN-TT93FS

    2)

    a) Windows(R) 7 Ultimate 64 or

    b) Windows(R) 7 Professional 64 or

    c) Windows(R) 7 Home Premium 64

    3)

    a) Core2 Duo SU9600 (1.60 GHz)or

    b) Core2 Duo SU9400 (1.40 GHz)or

    c) Celeron SU2300 (1.20 GHz)

    4) a) 8GB(4GB×2)

    b) 4GB(2GB×2)

    5) SSD or HDD and DVD options?

    6) a) IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n (MIMO 3×3) or

    b) IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n (MIMO 1×2) or

    7) ATOK 2009 for Windows?

    8) So-net?

Finally if I buy the TT from Japan brand new, will it have Japanese keyboard layouts and text or can I specify Western European keys. And is the 1 year warranty honoured by Sony in the UK

If I were to buy a TT I would go for :

    SU9600 Black W7 PRO
    4 GB >> can upgrade max 8GB
    128 GB SSD + BLURAY

This would be a nice septup IMO

Rachel, correct me if I am wrong.
I realized that both TZ and TT have USB 2.0 ExpressCard Slot.
So, you are connecting USB 3.0 to USB 2.0.
Did you run speed test on USB 3.0 device?

ngvuanh, i'm not sure if you would notice the difference with your TZ. I copied all my iPod music to my SSD internal drive and then copied it to my external HD, the file size was 476MB in size. Not that much i know but i don't have the time right now to do anymore testing.
The speeds were exactly the same on my SZ in integrated x3100 mode but may be i need to do that again. I tried it several times though.

I tried it on my TT and usb 3.0 was about 9-10 secs faster than usb 2.0 copying that file to my external HD so there was a difference but not much. Of course a large sized file should make the difference more noticeable.

    @ alexpeters

    Google Translate

Of course if you have an unlimited budget going for one with bluray, 8GB ram and a 512GB SSD is the way to go,

Go for this also IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n(MIMO 3×3, Again going for the wwan is a good option but the card I have read is locked. You can change it though and you will have the antenna and wwan board so you don't need to go and hunt those down.
It seems that you can have an English keyboard if you opt for the alphabetical sequence keyboard.

    Edited to add:
The USB expresscard has a Y splitter cable and you need to use that. You plug the USB 2.0 cable into the USB 2.0 port and then plug the usb 3.0 cable into the expresscard 3.0 usb port and it powers it that way.

    @alexpeters

Google translate is blocked by my company's firewall, so I'm not sure whether Rachel's link work for you or not. Anyway, here is a run down of the questions asked and some notes about them if you are not familiar with Japanese options:

    1. Personal or Business machine -- business has option for on-site service, which you probably can't use, and option for not installing any VAIO applications

    2. Windows version -- I believe Ultimate include language pack so you can change it directly to any language instead of doing a clean install from your own copy.

    3. Casing option

    4. CPU -- you have to pick SU9600/SU9400 if you want Bluray/WWAN

    5. RAM

    6. HDD/ODD combination

    7. TV tuner -- only works in Japan, don't bother

    8. WWAN built-in -- need unlocking I believe, but I concur with Rachel, get it

    9. WLAN -- pick the 3x3 MIMO (Intel 6300)

    10. Noise canceling headphone

    11. Fingerprint reader & TPM

    12. Keyboard -- pick English

    13. Supplied battery, standard or large

    14. Office 2007 and Adobe Acrobat combination

    15. McAfee Internet Security

    16. Adobe Premier and Photoshop combination

    17. ATOK -- Japanese dictionary, I don't think you need it

    18. VAIO application -- I guess it would be kind of like "fresh start" here in US, with minimum VAIO software.

    19. Warranty Service -- your CTO comes with 3-year warranty, but you can upgrade it to "3-year wide" which give you accident protection

    I am using TT290. I have 8GB ExpressCard SSD.
When I was using it on TZ, it showed as USB Mass Storage. It is the same now with TT290.
As I know, ExpressCard is PCI-Express x1 which has data rate at 250MB/s, or about 2.5Gbps while USB 2.0 is only about 480Mbps or about 50MB/s.

This may have been lost in the other conversation going on. I'd really appreciate it if there was someone out there who could sell me a set - you can't seem to buy just the headphones anywhere.

I finally ordered a SSD Crucial 64GB 1.8" for my trusty TT 11. A bit nervous in opening up the laptop though, it's been flawless for 18 month's. I hope nothing breaks.
The toshiba HDD 4200 rpm is really slowing the laptop down, it needs a SSD refresh badly.

Finally got my TT today :).
It's a Vaio TT90S (model PCG-4Q4N). It's got Vista on it and I'm going to upgrade it to Windows 7 ultimate tonight. Given this thread is now 170+ pages and I've been trying to read it all (why doesn't the TT have it's own forum rather than 1 whopping great long thread!) but it's tough going: are there any cathes to the Japanese to English upgrade?
There's a post I find on changing the basic Vista Japanese install to English Vista but that was a while ago.
In the past I've found the easiest way to make a machine is a Win 7 upgrade form Vista as it doesn't break the drivers (upgrade to real win 7 one's later).
Is this the case with the TT? or is it easier to do a base "blow away" Win 7 install and then hunt up the win 7 drivers from sony, and if so is there an order you should install the drivers in?

    Thanks

aussiehoudini I did a clean install and everything went fine.
The drivers are all available for W7 so you shouldn't have an issue.
I actually found that upgrading to W7 on another computer or was it on my TT, anyway i can't remember. Anyway i found that some of the power management settings; words etc was broken.

About your headphones, most probably people want to keep hold of their headphones. It might be a better idea to try and search on the part number or upgrade and get better headphones. I don't see why it shouldn't work or may be someone else knows differently?
Mine didn't come with headphones as i bought it like new and they decided to keep the set. This seems to be the part number MDR-NCO21LP/BM.
    http://www.sony.com.sg/microsite/vaio/products/vaio_tt/noise_cancel.html
I use over the head earphones anyway.

    ngvuanh
I'm not sure why i didn't see any speed increase with my SZ7 but i know with my TT it was working fine. Are you going to be doing any mods to your TT like the CPU?

Thanks for the reply. You know I've actually found it quite difficultto find the drivers this evening. I installed a fresh full copy of Win 7 64 bit as I couldn't upgrade from a Japanese language version, no problem. But since I have the TT90S I could only go to the Japanese Sony site and its not at all like the US or UK site in that its impossible to find drivers :(

Do you know if its possible to use win 7 drivers for other models on mine. I would assume so since its similarly specced.....

    Hi Guys,
I am slowly getting things to work on my windows 7 install. I tried installing drivers form the US site and some seemed to work OK. The web cam is working, SD card reader and a few bits that didnt before. The screengrab will show some stubborn ones that just will not install not matter which drivers i point them at. Can anyone assist with identification of these? Theres a base system device and an unknown device. Bluetooth seems to work fine so not sure whats going on there.
FN keys dont work yet (brightness) and I haven't gotten the volume keys on the front lip to work (although mute does - weird). The vaio control centre starts up but the S1 key doesn't work. Haven't tested the hdmi out but assume it wont work yet.

I don't know if that is true or not because I own a TT36GD/W (it is a Hong Kong model) officially lol although it is nothing like the spec i bought but that is besides the point.
Anyway, i used TT4 drivers that i got from the Sony EU website.
You can also use universal extractor if you have any problems installing but you shouldn't really with the EU drivers.

Unknown device = SFEP or SPIC
System Device = MS card reader.
You have unknown Bluetooth peripherical devices because you connected some phone to your computer and you cannot use some services. I often have these unknown devices when I connect to some Nokia or Blackberry.

Hi Aussie. I tried the US 64 bit drivers but was unable to get the Ambient Light sensor working at the time. The 64bit Windows 7 drivers on the Asia-Pacific Support are what I settled on (everything works):

    VGN-TT47GG : Downloads : Support : Sony Asia Pacific
