Woo! Just got my shipping confirmation as well. Shipping from Japan, should arrive Friday the 12th!

Just a heads up to all in Hong Kong.
Z217GG available for pickup already today!
Mine has just been picked up (not by me though) -
Does anyone have any idea whether it is possible to upgrade the RAM yourself?
-
^ No. It is soldered on the board.
-
^ No - You cannot add or swap memory yourself. Make sure you order with as much memory as you think you will ever need!
-
You are located in the US?
-
Damnit - too late. Just received my 4GB version and had even already ordered the 8GB replacement. Sigh. Thanks anyway!
-
Got my Z2 today!
First impression... light, fast booting (~15sec), nice screen, keyboard and touch-pad.
And no fan noise at all when surfing the internet. Even with my ear next to the exhaust, it's hardly noticeable. The "speakers" however... I'm sorry to say it, but they're totally crap. Flat, no volume at all and the sound get really bad when you try to up the volume above ~50%. For the system sounds it's ok, but if you want to watch a movie or listening to music.... don't even try.
Besides the speakers, I'm very pleased
!
Only thing that's not working is the wireless LAN. I think it's a software issue or something with my router. Had the same thing with my old laptop from time to time.
Some quick unboxing pictures:
Not so much bloatware, but I'll probably do complete format and a fresh install. I already made a backup of the hole drive (Repair and system partition), so I can put it all back when something goes wrong or isn't working. -
^^Beautifull pics

You get anything yet? I haven't.
The one thing I noticed is that they changed my my order status from "Your VAIO is being built" to "Your VAIO IS BEING BUILT"
Change in capitalization = shipping?

I agree about the 1920x1080. I had the Z11 with the 1440x900 and the z14 with the 1920x1080 and I have to say I liked the 1440x900 a lot more. 1920x1080 is just too small and even adjusting the dpi and screen sizes there is never a complete balance. I had to continuously adjust the screen and was never satisfied. I ordered the Z2 with the 1440x900 because of this. -
^
I think you mean 1600x900 and not 1440x900. -
^where did you pick ur Z?
-
LOL. I don't know if that means anything or not, but no word yet on mine. I hate waiting like this
-
Actually, I just noticed one other change. It's now in Caps like you noted and the estimated ship date says 7/15/2011 (as in JULY 15). Unless they have a time machine that let's them go back in time, that would be a really cool trick.

order that your order date? -
Sonystyle shop Causeway Bay.
Did you pick yours up yet?
I don't know if it matters but I preordered it first thing in the morning on the 27th...so I think I was among the first to preorder.
I didn't get the Godiva coupons like you... -
Yes, that was my order date.
-
Well, something is happening. I just saw that Sony charged my card the amount for the extended warranty. They have not charged the laptop yet. Maybe this means that shipment is near.
-
anyone ordered in US with WWAN has gotten a shipping date? or received a delay note?
Seems the problem is applicable to WWAN CTO... -
I ordered my US model on 7/13 with an estimated ship date of 7/29. then I got the following e-mails:
1. on 7/14 it was delayed to 8/17
2. on 7/18 it was delayed to 8/17
3. on 8/2 it was rescheduled to 8/12
4. on 8/9 it was delayed to 8/12 (that's what it says!)
5. on 8/9 confirmed shipped with tracking number (Hooray!) -
may I request a picture with the lid open to its maximum apperture, and ask if you could mesure the max or shall I said minimum height when the screen is open to its max.. I want to know if it will fit bellow my monitor
cheers -
Crap. I got a 4GB version in blue thinking I could upgrade later. Well, I'll play with it when it arrives and perhaps return for an upgrade if I feel it's necessary.
-
anyone nice enough to give us some feedback on the REAL lifetime of the Vaio with the standard battery? if you had the chance of monitoring it...
thanks! -
You are correct the 6230 only does WiFi and BT3.0HS
IIRC it is not soldered, it is a proprietary part like the SSD.
It may be possible to upgrade the memory yourself later if you can source the proprietary part. You may void your warranty by doing this. -
Ugh, that makes it even more expensive. Thanks.
Oh, also does it have a USB3 port on the lappy or only on the PMD? There's conflicting info out there. -
^
The light peak port on the laptop supports USB 3.0. -
I hope this is what you're looking for. Lid opened to its maximum. The height of the lid is about 122mm or 4.8 inch.
-
When my laptop arrives, i think i can make use of the memory stick slot to hold some .rar'd files, etc. It says it is a memory stick pro duo slot. Does anyone know if the memory stick pro duo "HG" will work in the Vaio Z2?

^
It should work since it works in my VPCZ138GG. -
Ok, cool. Thanks. I do a lot of work with virtual machines, and i feel the 32GB space is a great way for me to keep some compressed machines that i need to pull up infrequently.
-
^
I hope you are not going to run the machines form the card...it's pretty slow... -
Thank you Marty
whould you mind mesuring the other dimention
-
Yes, unfortunately the $2999 Signature model only has 6GB (4GB x 2GB), so you lose 2GB to get the premium carbon option.
Form vs. function choice.
-
I had the same considerations too. Prior to my Z2, both my previous Zs had the 900p display. Both were perfectly readable, and very a breeze to use, as regards reading and surfing. When the Z2 came about, I had a choice to make - choose a full HD panel, or continue using the 900p screen.
However, the sole model offered to the Singapore market was decked out with a full HD panel. As I didn't really have a choice in this case, I went ahead and bought it, knowing that I'd have to live with the 1080p screen one way or another.
I am happy to report that the "shrinking" of the pages has not really dampened the utilization of the laptop. Text looks so much sharper now, and it's still perfectly readable, albeit a little straining at times. I'm sure I'll get used to a full HD 13.1" panel in no time. Besides, all my laptops are often connected to external monitors, so I'm pretty used to a 1080p workspace.
-
i do,
it moved to sep-10th now TT -
Hi guys,
I could use the Z2 at a Sony store and was impressed especially by its weight.
Do we know if both screen resolutions are Adobe RGB > 95%? -
yes

I ordered on the same day and got all the same emails minus the last one. WHERE IS MY TRACKING NUMBER!? -
From spec: yes.
From review: no.. there's only a review which show wonderful contrast, goo brightness (362 cd/m^2) and good black for the 1080p. But as for Adobe Rgb coverage, not 96% but 90%. -
Yes, the 1080p is at least 96% of the Adobe RGB gamut -
Specifications // VAIO Z Series
And if the 900p is even the same as the Z1, it will also match your requirement -

Ok thanks for your answers.
So I'll get the same colors by going for 1600x900 than on the 1920x1080 screen, that's good to hear. -
I ordered mine (after cancelling previous orders) on 8/2, so the delay definitely isn't your position in line.
-
So 1080p screen provides more readable text? Is it with text size matched using higher dpi settings on 1080p screen? Also, what other differences u see between the 2 screens? I read that on z11 900p screen had higher brightness and contrast in comparison to 1080p and ordered 900p one.
-
I've been using my Z2 (rather sparingly, though) with its default settings, and text is small, sharp and legible. Some might find it a tad too small, but I'm perfectly alright with it. I'm glad I was able to adjust this fast - I was afraid I had to constantly tweak the DPI settings.
I guess the number one benchmark in this case had to be Wikipedia - I read a lot and nothing presents a bigger wall of text than Wiki. I tried reading a few articles, and had no problems there.
I've heard concerns about the difference in brightness & contrast between 900p and 1080p panels, but I haven't really scrutinized this issue thus far. -
^ if Laptop Mag is right, with a brightness over then 350 cd/m^2 the 1080p is brighter than old 1080p by more then 110 cd/m^2 and then old 900p by more then 20 cd/m^2
-
The other dimension is about 137mm.
edit: it's 370 mm -
Well using the old a2+b2=c2, (and taking away 7mm of the depht of the laptops 210mm, because of the hinge that goes in underneth)
I'll get the blue line to be 162,2+203= 365,2 mm
Could be completly wrong. I'm just going from the pictures..
-
deleted.. wrong info
-
oops my bad... it's 370mm
