corteen - I have to agree with MB77. Something is wrong with your external display. The CW can output Blu Ray over HDMI at 1080p to a TV.

If you have a LCD or Plasma TV with HDMI, I would try connecting the CW to that and see if you can play a Blu Ray movie.

HMMM - the monitor is supposedly HDCP compliant.

I had the desktop extended so I will try it without and see what happens - strange - my previous laptop with BR a Dell XPS1640 used to display the BluRay movies on one screen while allowing me to work on the other. Is this restriction only on SONY machines ?

    Done some more tests:
Oblivion: fluent on all details maxed (HDR, no AA)
CS Source/HL2: same, but it isn't really demanding

No shutters in those two, so maybe it was game related after all?

    3D mark tests, this is for CW with 230M, P4750 CPU (2.13 GHz, 1066mhz), 4GB DDR3 RAM

3D mark 2006 (standard set of tests in free version):
    3D mark score: 5669
    SM 2.0 score: 2391
    SM3.0 score: 2334
    CPU score: 1847

    Vantage:
3D mark V score: N/A (test resolution of 1280x800 not supported by the screen :))
    GFX score:2092

In 3D mark tests, results for 2006 were OK (framerate 10-33fps and 3D mark is demanding), so 2-3 year old games should run fine with most/all settings. Vantage tests were really bad (3-10fps), and Physx test was disaster. New games should be less demanding than 3D M but I wouldnt think that you can turn on all the candies and still enjoy fluent game. Unfortunately Oblivion was the most recent game on my hdd, so I can't test anything more recent :)

What I really love about this laptop is that it really doesn't get hot or laud. When playing games or running 3D mark it only gets warm on the bottom left side near the vent and the central right area under the palm rest (well, that shiny part near arount touchpad) - but it never gets any warmer on the top/keyboard side. Just the bottom. Vent is very quiet and only under serious load it increases speed a bit, but still stays really quiet.

Someone asked about glare screen, is it usable outdoors. Well, at least european version isn't. It IS glare, no "antireflective" anything, period.

Keyboard was another question - I like it, was used to DELL's or Acer's and the Sony's one certainly isnt worse. I don't touch type but my wife does and she likes the keyboard more then on our other laptops. Arrow keys are a bit small, even for me and I have small hands, so it may be a problem for some people.

Build quality: feels ok. I've seen much worse but also seen better Vaios (Z for instance). Yes, battery moves a little bit but I wouldn't have noticed if I haven't read about it in one of the posts here. Overall, there is no piece of this laptop that I could point to and say "this should be done better". Could, but not should, if you know what i mean.

BIOS: in my CW it is the basic "don't change anything but the date" version.

Touchpad: Yes, it is multitouch, but implementation just sux. Sometimes it works quick, sometimes slow, sometimes when you don't want it to work. Not whether the problem is hardware or software, but as it is it's best to just disable it. That's my subjective feeling.

hey all, thinking of picking up one of the bb cw's as the price seems better than what I can get locally. Anyone know if the best buy cw's display is inferior in any way? Seems like BB is offering a very good deal on the base configuration.

Did you run these benchmarks on the Sony-factory config of Windows 7 or did you modify performance (by removing bloatware and unnecessary Sony software)?

I ran the DPC latency test on mine (P8700/230 GPU/4mb). I'm not familiar with this test, but I did notice something. When I first run this, my system registers mostly green, with an occasional yellow bar, maybe 10-12% yellow. If I stop and the restart the test (without exiting), the results immediately become worse, not as bad as your result, but still with about 50% of the bars being red/yellow. The reds peak at about 2700us. I can exit the program and restart and the exact same phenomenom occurs. I am running this with factory default settings intact.

Straight from the box. There are like 30 bloatware apps installed and 14 services described as VAIO ... running in the background, so it may have affected CPU results a bit. But I wouldnt think it can affect GFX results?

Well, it as an impact on the overall performance, for sure. What also might boost up the 3DMark06 results would be installing the latest nvidia Forceware.

Would you say the brightness of the screen is better than average?

I am interested in purchasing a CW, and have found information in this thread very valuable in helping make my decision. Thanks to all of you who have contributed content.

Question - I'd like to configure/order via sonystyle site. Several folks have mentioned a $200 ecoupon is available. Can anyone provide information on how I find the coupon? I'd sure appreciate any pointers.

Ok then, will look at the CW tomorrow at my local dealer :)

    @Fapuse:

-Back to noise level: you said it's quiet. Would you say as quiet as an Macbook? What is the notebook you're referring to?

-Did you try any lower resolutions under Windows 7 to prove the behavior of interpolation? What are the next two lower resolutions the driver offers? 1280x768(720?) and what else? Thx!

Day 1 of using my new CW. It's been on all day (so 9 hours so far), it's extremely quiet and very cool. It's actually a stark contrast to the Dell laptop I use for work which gets very hot and noisy. My initial impression is that the CW is a quality product in comparison.

The screen is excellent. Very bright, clear and usable. Again, knocks the Dell screen for six.

I have Mac alergy so can't tell. It's as quiet as my company laptops - various IBM/lenevo/Dell models, and they are quiet. It's by far the most quiet "gaming" laptop that I have seen. By gaming I uderstand playing not so old games with detals other then low, not a serious alienware kind of gaming :). Comparing to DELL XPS16/13 and my old Acer TM 8210. Running a game on each of those means fan goes berserk & + 10db. And just barely noticable fan speed increase on CW. Maybe I'll just post a video? :)

Haven't tried lower resolutions. I can choose:
    1366x768 (native)
    1360x768 (?)
    1280x768
    1280x720
    1024x768
    800x600

as someone mentioned above, the Sony style rep said that its for pre-configured models, but guessing he was nice he ended up giving it anyways, so im guessing its not really meant to be given but if the rep is nice enough and if you ask MAYBE they might give it to you. im gonna try it out by calling sony style and asking few people for it, maybe ill get lucky and might get it also :D or ill call in my local sony store and see what they say :), it would be awesome to know if anyone else got the $200 ecoupon

Funny how a model like this:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo-processor P7450 2.13 Ghz
    Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bits)
    4 DDR3 SDRAM (2x 2 GB)
    HD 320 GB 5400 rpm
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 230M GPU

    without blu-ray, not customizable

costs € 899 over here. That's $ 1324. Same price online and in three shops I checked.

And just to clarify, the CTO models do have an Intel 5100 wifi card right? The sales representative told me it's an Atheros card but he wasn't sure.

I just ran the free versions of 3D Mark 06, 3D Mark Vantage, and PC Mark Vantage x64 on my system (P8700/230m GPU, 4mb). This is my 1st time running these benchmarks and I did not attempt to tweak any system settings, everything was run at factory defaults with whatever bloatware processes active. I received notices in every test that the specified video resolution was not supported. It also listed my GPU as “generic VGA”, so I don’t know if that had any effect on the results.

    3D Mark 06
    3D Mark score: 5837
    SM 2.0 score: 2393
    SM 3.0 score: 2299
    CPU score: 2275

    3D Mark Vantage
    3D Mark Vantage score: N/A
    CPU score: 4822
    GPU score: 2051

    PC Mark Vantage
    PC Mark Suite: 4428

Any tips on improving these are welcome. I’ll start tweaking, but wanted to establish a baseline first.

My CTO has the Intel 5100 wifi, although my paperwork from the store stated Atheros.

No surprise, there seems to be a lot of misinformation even within Sony on this system. I have a feeling my discount was a store manager decision, based on the fact that they were running an aforementioned in-store promotion at the time. I indicated I was ready to buy, and I was in the store (for the 2nd day in a row), so that also may have had something to do with his willingness to offer it.

The manager pulled out a binder from under the register and flipped to a page with several bar codes listed. Above each was a small description and the alphanumeric ecoupon. He scanned the barcode to apply my discount. He then set the binder down on the counter and I tried to quickly see what I could. The codes on the top half of the sheet were all for tv’s and such. The bottom 1/3 was all Vaio codes. I saw $50, $100, $200, and $350 off Vaio codes (might have been others). None of these stated specific models in the description. He put the binder away after a few seconds so I didn't get a chance to memorize anything I bet your local store has the same binder with same or similar codes. Perhaps it’s the manager’s discretion as to how to apply these.

So I guess this means it would be a real simple swap to put a 5100 in my CW to replace the Atheros. The 5100 has 5 GHz N support right?

Is it true? Really true? That's great, since I've heard that Sony has disabled VT in their Vaio, it made me be disappointed because I need to run some VT apps for my study on my new laptop, at least XP Mode in Windows 7 :p

I'm going to buy CW16 with P8700, is it a CTO version? :)

yeah Intel's Virtual Technology lets you run Virtual system like XP, which is great and needed for business users mostly im guessing as they want the newest OS but most softwares they use are XP compatible only so win7 has this built in on compatible Processors and win7 Pro. Alot of companies are still using XP and have specific softwares designed for XP only so thats when it comes in, but i mean it comes in handy for various of reasons. Im gonna use it becuase Stereo Mix has been disabled in vista and win7 ESPECIALLY SONY :( they hard coded banned it so its only available in XP.

The DPC latency chart is a bit worrying since it reminded me of the Dell Studio XPS 13's own which has worse bars than the CW's and resulted into audio popping noises during playback. Hope the Sony doesn't suffer the same fate.

Vaio CW owners, how's the audio levels on your laptops?

One of the reasons Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT) is important, for me anyways, is so I can run "Windows XP Mode", which is available in Windows 7 Professional version and above. Windows XP Mode
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Some Processors have Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT) built in and some don't, so you won't find a setting for VT in the BIOS, unless the Processor supports the Technology. Look under the "Advanced Technologies" heading on the following Intel Pages:

    -T4300 (No Intel® VT):

Hi, how is the webcam clarity, accord to spec it says 640*480 which does seem VERY low... Is only, the size of picture low or is the overall clarity worse ? Can it be used for normal video conferencing ? (Comparing with dell studio of the same range)

I already know the P8700 CPU has VT but Sony has hidden it in the BIOS for "security reason" but electrobuzz who purchased the Vaio CW CTO version confirmed that we can enable VT in the BIOS.

I'm going to buy the model VPCCW16FG/P with P8700 and I wonder if this model supports VT?

I also was thinking about the Dell few weeks ago but changed my mind when I saw in reviews that it gets hot!
I'd appreciate if a CW owner can elaborate about its heat and noise when in load

And 699 sterling in UK, which is some 750 euro. Yes, it sux I know. If you buy it through sonystyle UK and add ALL the features then the price is around 900 euro, same as this underspecced euro one.

By the way, I've written before that CW is as quiet as my office laptops - but sitting here in my office now I have to admit that it is a bit more noisy. I can actually hear CW fan (barely but anyway), and my DELLs D630 and E6400 are completely silent when doing some CPU undemanding tasks.

I've been looking around alot and the Sony CW seems really good!

I've been debating between this and the Asus UL80. Hopefully this will help me to make a decision.

For the CW owners, just come questions?

What kind of battery life are you guys getting on your standard capacity battery? For those with Large capacity Batteries, what's your guys battery life like? During Idle? Under Load?
Also include the conditions (Watching movies, using office, using photoshop, gaming etc.)

Are you able to do switchable graphics? Are you able to switch between discrete and integrated graphics?

Does it come with a recovery disc or a recovery partition on the harddrive?
(Please state if it is the BB model or the CTO model.)

I too have been interested in getting the UL80, but the new review just posted on this site doesn't sound too good:
