Oooh... I kinda wish I hadn't seen those.

Can we get those custom made through a company like with cellphones? Or do we have to diy?

    ...That's what I'm afraid of.

I wonder if you could roughen the surface with a really fine grit sandpaper or abrasive sponge (pot scrubber?) to get a similar effect.

I finally got one :) from amazon.com I got the matte black one with the P7450 and the GT230M and blue-ray :) It was $1000 shipped. I should have it in 3 days. And its matte not glossy which I like alot. Amazon only had 1 in stock and I snagged it...

Is anyone else experiencing fan problems? It's the oddest thing

The laptop fan is always on no matter what the temperature is.(CPU temperature is hovering around 37 and GPU is around 24) My bios is up to date as well.

Sony just says to keep it plugged in the first few times to use it to let it charge up all the way. I don't think you need to worry about letting it drain all the way or anything.

If you need to activate, you should see some kind of pop-up and you can just do it online.

yeah these are al Lithium Ion batteries and dont have the charge memory problem...so whatever you do with the battery initially shouldnt really matter the long term performance of it... though a full discharge from time to time shoud be allowed so that all the electrodes get used and charged again, so that they dont stagnate and loose their charge holding capability....!!! Had read this some time about the iphon batteries guess its good for laptop batteries too...!

Ehm, usually you're supposed to full-charge the battery before using it.

Not as far as I know

Windows Home? Windows 7 Home Premium? Well, I didn't need to... If Windows itself suggests you to do it, then click the notification that it gives you. It should redirect you to Microsoft's website for verification.

On which other site? Just trying to help you out, because the model number says: VPC-CW1MFX/B

The /B at the end denotes Jet Black, while the /U, or in some cases /BU means matte black.

My fiances arrived at 6:28 am the day it was delivered and was on a truck by 9:42 am. ! I hate you Fedex! Now I gotta wait until Saturday because nobody will be home tomorrow to sign for it.

Unlike you, i am not so technologically advanced. I did not try the other option simply because i don't know how to do that. I have always relied on the recovery disks.

About the recovery disks, the most important for me is the SONY bundled software that comes with windows. I don't want to spend more on buying the DVD burning utilities and Blu-ray playing softwares. I don't know if it will include the Windows key, but i always thought that the keys on the recovery disks are always OEM keys and not your key from the sticker at the bottom of your computer. Atleast, in the system properties page, it is the OEM key and not your personal key.

I understadn your concern, but i could only think of this option. As sony support do not carry the recovery disks for the CW yet.

If you could please help, that would be great...

I also faced a similar issue and what i did was, before it got into the truck for delivery, i called fedex and requested them to HOLD it at the facility. Thye confirmed me right then and i went to pick it up in the next 30 min and they gave it to me. After i got it, i saw that there is a sticker on the box with "DO NOT HOLD FOR PICKUP" written on it. But there is no harm in trying. Atleast, i got it without any hassel.

SAME! OMG they delivered too early today. My fiance didn't get home until about 2 pm, and they delivered at 1 pm. Tomorrow she works 11-7 and me from 8-5...so Saturday one of us is gonna have to be home all day! We were going to take both our cars for an oil change. Looks like I'll be taking them both one at a time.

if its the bundled software you are worried about, then i am not sure if the recovery CD's would also help - but then what do i know...

what i do know is that...you can always get loads of free ware to online to burn DVD's and to play Bluray discs and much more...! so that shouldnt really be a matter of too much distress...!

Once I actually get my laptop I should still bea ble to help you there.

The Windows backup is actually quite easy to use. Just go to Control Panel and click on backup. Setup the backup using the wizard thing it has. After create a recovery DVD. Probably not the same, but its an option.

    Hi

I did a semi-clean install and my fan is now always spinning even with very few programs running.

Did anyone encountered this problem after a semi-clean install ?

Did anyone encountered this problem after a fresh clean install ?

Is there any way to know how fast it spins at all ?!!

I installed speedfan but it can't detect it. Any other soft ?

After the semi-clean install I lost VAIO update 4 utility. Although it is just an update utility I wonder if it doesn't contain any utility to regulate the fan in it.

Thanks in advance for any help

Yeah. This fan issue isn't fun.

BIOS update doesn't fix it. Anyone else have their fans spinning at low speeds constantly even under no load / stress to the CPU/GPU?

A question for those who received their CW very recently and didn't change anything regarding the installation (fresh/semi/clean install, ...):

Does your fan spins all the time ???

the following thread suggest that most vaios suffer from the fans running all the time:

You have to install it before using it. Not sure how or where, but I know my fiance told me she installed it. She was proud of herself for actually getting something to work on a computer lol.

From the Sony's business website, I noticed the description

Who said a business PC had to be boring?
The VAIO® CW notebook can handle anything you throw at it, and can do so in style. With an array of high-gloss color options that catch the eye and a stylish palmrest, this notebook is for those looking for more than "business as usual" from their PC brand.

I don't see any info stating whether it's matte or not... I would prefer the matte, but I can't really find it anywhere and typing the model number in the search box doesn't seem to help either.

    run Vaio recovery

It should be in your program files ; anyway the full path is:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\VAIO Recovery\VAIORecv.exe"
    click install programs or drivers
    click next twice

    check "Quick Web Access"
    and confirm

Unless you did a clean install or something, I don't know why it doesn't work for you in the first place. Anyway, the above clicks should make it some good.

Can you check something please: is your fan running all the time ?

The business site itself sells (not really sells, more like advertises, since they point you to a reseller) Vaio CWs of different colors. The colors they advertise are black, matte black, white and pink. What you have to do is look at the end of the product number to figure out the color.

VPCCW1NFX/B and all others with a /B = jet black

VPCCW1JGX/U and all others with a /U = matte black

    and so on.

You sure its not showing the year as 2010 :)...J/K...I'm not sure but there seems to be some issue with their shipping system. Its not able to carry out delivery scheduling very accurately.

From what i have read and also experienced, Sony ships out your laptop in a day or 2 from the time you get the production build Email..So relax

    Enjoy

Yes mine does and always has. Its very quiet when idle and keeps the laptop very cool.

Maybe Sony decided after all the problems with past GPUs (8400 8600m etc etc) that they should stop the constant heat cycling of the components and let the fans run constant like desktops do albeit at a much slower and quieter speed, only spinning faster when running something intensive.

I think its a great idea as long as it doesnt wear the fans out before the laptops expired

I was looking for a neat and sturdy sleeve and backpack bag too. Seems like if you find American made stuff it's very creative, but the sleeves and laptop bags are often designed for Macs. Timbuk2 and Red Oxx are just two off the top of my head that I remember from searches. ebags.com has hundreds of bags, I use them to see what's out there, but I ordered from them once and had a horrible time.

I'm waiting to see if we actually get our laptop before buying any sort of bag. Ordered on the 29th and still no update or change to our 22nd ship date. :(

    • How does the sound quality compare to a Dell XPS 1530? The Dell is quite loud and would like something similair.
    • How does the nVidia G 230M compare to the ATI 4570?
    • How does the multi-touch pad work on the Sony and is it effective?
    • Is Intel VT enabled on this laptop?
    • Lastly, with regards to the Blu-Ray drives, I don't use disc media a lot and when I do it tends to be backups or personal copies will both drives Combi and Blu-ray Write work with this?
