Hey guys, is there any guide on how to re-paste the gpu in vpcf226? I think mine should do some repaste now since i've been overclocked the gpu for quite a long time. Thx in advance.

Hi, yesterday I reinstalled my vaio (wiped the hard drive, reinstalled W7 home premium and downloaded the drivers)
But now my laptop's fan is extremely loud, all the time. (it used to only be loud when I was doing something heavy, or was on highperformance / performance mode)
Before the wipe, I could have my settings to balanced in power options and power plan options, and it would only really make noise when I was rendering or gaming.
Now it already goes insane when I simply power it up or am doing nothing (only firefox open with one tab, no other programs)
    ..
I really have no idea what to do about this, all help is welc

There is no guide on disassembling the F22/23/24 that I am aware of, but I have done this to clean the fan and it's not that bad at all. Locate all of the screws, including one hiding underneath a rubber plug hiding below the touchpad buttons, and then use a small blade tip screwdriver to gently pry off the cover. You'll see two sets of copper pipes to the fan. Unscrew and remover the fan assembly together with both pipe assemblies to expose the processor and gpu. Smooth even layer of paste on both, and put it all back together. If you're looking for a video, just watch a generic re-paste on youtube to get the idea.

That's what the jack looks like on my F23. The issue for you would be, whether or not the connector from the brick would work. You could always order the part (should be cheap), and see the cord works with it before installing on the board.

Just a quick update on my laptop
I ordered a Samsung 840 pro 256GB SSD and rolled back to Windows 7.
I am 100% happy with the laptop again.
With the 16GB of RAM and the SSD this thing is as fast as my new macbook air
The stock HDD just couldn't keep up.

I installed Windows 7 from a Windows 7 Retail disk. Then I had to plug in an ethernet cable from the router to my laptop to get online then started downloading drivers and such to get everything working. Took about 2 hours and 15 reboots but am ecstatic with the results!

Thank you for the hint for the hidden screw!
But do we also need to remove the two small allen screws under the battery to get acces to the fan? It is very difficult to find the appropriate allen key.

Yes, all the screws underneath the battery need to be removed. Interesting that yours are of the hex type, because mine were simply phillips head like the rest, just smaller perhaps. They were located toward the center of the laptop as opposed to toward the edge.

BTW, the cover isn't going to simply "lift" off. You'll need to gently pry around the perimeter with a precision blade screwdriver or something to release the tabs.

You might try to pm "rob650", the guy from the previous page who just installed an os on his new ssd. The issues you are encountering are some of the same ones causing me to hesitate to replace my hdd with an ssd. I'm confident I'd get it sorted out if I did it, but I just can't deal with my lappy being down for any amount of time right now.

Sounds like SFEP ( Sony® Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver ) is not installed.

Its pretty easy, I subscribe to this thread, and there are lots of others who can chime in, do it. Get yourself an SSD and put a fresh win7 copy on, you will love it.

Could someone point me to the driver/software for the back-lit keyboard? I used a 3rd party computer repair company to replace my F22 keyboard (and display) after some nasty liquid damage. The guys were able to replace the parts, using OEM stuff; however, they seem to have uninstalled the driver. Looking through Sony's eSupport for my machine, I wasn't able to locate anything.

Anyone updated their F2 to Windows 8.1? I have a Win8 license for it, but had reverted to Win7 because the drivers were a bit lacking (I lost the fan control options and the Vaio color modes for the screen from the Vaio control center, if I recall correctly). But with Win8.1 out and with the UI changes, I'd like to put Win8.1 on it if it will be stable.

For anyone thinking of doing this, visit Sony's page first. Basically, it's recommended that you uninstall Vaio Care and Vaio Update before you update. It took a couple hours of downloading and installing updates, but now that I've got 8.1 fully installed and updated, it runs beautifully. Everything seems to work.

Don't know if you have already solved your problem, but I ordered my part from:

1-967-773-41 - Sony VAIO Laptop DC Jack VPC-F2 Series - Laptop Parts Expert

It is more expensive but comes with a cable assembly so it requires no soldering. With the part that you are showing, you will need to unsolder the old cable and solder it to the new part.

I have a vpcf236fm/b. Your model may not be compatible with the part mentioned. On my Vaio, the center plastic part broke off, exposing the two metal pins that your are now seeing.

    Good luck!

I have a VPCF236FM/B. On my laptop, after you remove the optical drive, there is a small fingerhole at the top of the drive chassis. You gently push up on the fingerhole to release the keyboard moving from right to left. I was not careful enough and put a small cosmetic crack on my keyboard.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but my VPCF236FM/B came with 8 GB of memory, which Sony claims is the max. Anyone upgrade to 16 GB using larger chips?

DC Jack & Harness Replacement (for loose Power Jack that looses contact)

Just completed a much needed DC Jack & Harness Replacement on my 2011 F2290X. I thought I might share my experience as I couldn't come across much info before I cracked mine open. (I am by no means an expert and this was the first time I've opened up a laptop so do keep that in mind, I wouldn't describe this as overly difficult even with someone with no experience, the trickiest part it getting the case back on over the display ports)

Here are a few useful resources.
NEW Notebook Sony Vaio VPCF2 VPC F2 2KFX V081 Series DC Power Jack Laptop Cable | eBay - link to the correct replacement harness on eBay 35$ (this is the bottom harness in the photo)
DC Power Jack Sony Vaio VPCF2 VPC F2 V080 603 0001 6843 A Charge IN Port Socket | eBay - link to the DC Jack you should NOT buy, the pins should be on the back not the top (if you go down the route of replacing the jack only you will have to solder it to the existing harness also)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyraI9Ot-6k Extremely useful youtube video on how to open the back (the only one I could find) There are 4 screws to pay particular attention to; the one under the trackpad that is hidden behind a rubber plug (see picture) the 3 flat black screws under the DVD drive (you will need to slide the drive out to get at the last 2)

    Here are a few pictures.

    20131221_130200.jpg 20131221_130712.jpg 20131221_132416_LLS.jpg 20131221_132458_LLS.jpg 20131221_132601_LLS.jpg 20131221_135319.jpg

Once you have taken the back off the repair is relatively simple, remove the 2 large silver screws around the fan housing to allow you to lift up the fan assembly slightly in order to unscrew the bracket that holds down the DC jack.
Once removed the harness can be slid away from the motherboard and pulled through (towards where the jack would sit) and free. (note the route of the silver cable through the various holders)
Slide the replacement harness in the same way and fit it under the plastic holders bending the cable where needed (this can be tricky). Note you will need to lift up the fan housing again slightly to place the cable under the main holder.
    Connect the harness,
Re-attach the bracket (dont forget the extra cable that goes under the screw)
Finally screw the fan housing back down.
(While you have the back off check for excess dust in the fan assembly, blowing some air through the heat sync should reduce temps and fan noise somewhat)

Then place the back cover back on (going from the Jack side first) getting the HDMI slot to line up with the port is tricky and takes some maneuvering.
Put the screws back (mainly one size expect for 2 thick ones and a few shorter ones which I tried to keep separate.)

If you have any questions please ask.

    Touchpad buttons are failing.

They both still work but require a hard press, and toward the center of the "bar".

I use an external mouse most of the time, but still...

    Hi there,

I'm planning to change my BR-drive for an SSD drive. I have a VPCF22C5E model.
I've never opened my laptop, so I'm a little concerned about that. Is there any guide, pictures, or something showing how to disassemble?
Once I open it, I think I'm going to change the thermal paste also, because my fan is very noisy and the temperature is always around 60C doing anything.

For now, I think I will need this:
    Sony Vaio VPC-F22 VPC-F23 VPC-F24 HDD Caddy

Any suggestion before disassembling and maybe destroying my precious?
    Regards!

    I've seen this:

It's not F22 model, but do I really need to remove all the back of my laptop to change the optical drive, or is it similar to that one?

No, just the screw which releases the drive from the chassis. Removing the back of the laptop is no trouble, and you should be doing that anyway to ensure the fan is clean, so that your rig runs cool, preserving its life.

    Hi

My VPCF2's adapter is almost dead, I want to buy a new one but the official sony site only lists two models, and only one of them is 19V:
    VGP-AC19V74 AC-adapter -> VGP-AC19V74 | VAIO® computers | Sony

    Now is VGP-AC19V74 compatible with my current Vaio VPCF2 / F22 2D?

    Current adapter:

    Adapter from link:

On vaios website it lists: VAIO® Fit 13A (SVF13N***), VAIO® Tap 11 (SVT112**) as compatible models only.

Ok, I could extract my optical drive and replace it with an SSD (I put the SSD in the HDD bay and the old HDD in the optical bay).
It was pretty easy; the only problem was extracting the faceplate of the drive; one click was damaged and I broke it.

Now, today I've tried to replace the thermal paste. I remove all the screws, and I couldn't take the back case off.
The area around HDD and optical bay is very easy, but it get stucked around the kensington port / AC plug / vent area. Around the touchpad there are some small clicks that seems very fragile and I didn't want to break.

Which is the best way to disassemble this? I think that the logical is to start with the optical bay, and the hinge, and then take it off towards the touchpad. Is that right?
How can I take off that kensington / AC plug area? It was really stuck there. I've tried with some screw and plastic cards, and it didn't move.

Can anyone do some explanation or video about the process?
    You will save me!

Look back within this thread. Obviously , you have to make sure you remove all of the screws, including the ones in the battery compartment, the three flat at the mouth of the optical bay, as well as the hidden one underneath the black plug on the front, underneath the touchpad buttons. After you are sure you have all of them out, just use a precision flat-head screw driver to gently release the tabs all around the perimeter of the plastic.

Thanks for that tip! I didn't see that hidden screw.

Finally I could replace the thermal paste. The noise has decreased a lot, and now the temperature is around 50C instead of 65-70C like before.
Really nice. It's like having a new computer!

So... my sister's exactly 2-year old VPCF22 just stopped responding completely :( No light on power on (try to power on...). We tried pulling out the battery, "powering on" (without the A/C) just to clear any residual charge, and then connected the A/C... no go :(

Any clues what I should check before sending it off to a repair center? The thing is we don't have an official Sony presense here, so I am not even confident they can fix it correctly, so I would at least want to see what I can do. (I won't be changing the motherboard/CPU/GPU or anything of the sort, but I want to make sure what the problem is rather, and most probably send it off to Austria for repairs).

Did the battery have a charge the last time it was used? Does the power brick's green led light up when plugged in? Wondering if the A/C jack isn't toast, resulting in both a dead battery and no current.

The battery had charge, it was on A/C and just stopped working. It (adapter) does light up green, but the laptop does not.

My multimedia buttons (on top) stopped working a few days ago. I reinstalled Vaio Event Service, but they are still not working.
Recently I updated Vaio Update and the graphic card, but I don't think it's because of that.

This happened to someone also? Anyone knows how to fix this?

Yes, I've already tried that. I restored to the oldest (from one week ago), and the problem is still there. Not lucky with that.

BTW, the Fn buttons are working without any problems and the LED is still glowing when I press the button (so it's not a hardware issue).

Still running strong as my desktop replacement. The official word from Vaio support is NOT to upgrade until the drivers are ready.

Running Win 10 on my F24C5E for about 4 months now, almost everything is working fine. Only brightness adjustment via Fn button is not working, also ASSIST and VAIO button aren't working (media control keys and WEB button are working).
Under Device manager two devices are unrecognised:
    -Base system device
-Unknown device SNY5001 (needs Sony Firmware Extension Parser)

If this is your main computer, I would advise you to wait for Sony to provide updated drivers, or at least create system image of your current system.
As far as I know only notebooks shipped with Win 8/8.1 will be updated

    Thanks for your answers!

Where should I check to wait for the drivers?
This is still my main computer, so I would prefer to wait for it... if that happens some day.
